I have qlogic cards in my blades and did attempt booting from san on HS20's. I had no problem with the Qlogic driver, but there were numerous other issues with FreeBSD and the HS20, more particularly, ACPCI (think I said that right?!) power control, and some other minor issues I don't remember now. I did however manager to get it all installed and working once, then some tech guy screwed the partition up and I lost the initiative to try it all again!!! I tried VMWARE running it and that was extremely easy to do compared to trying FreeBSD direct on that setup. Freebsd 6 (which wasn't out at the time I tried except for Beta) seemed to have the ACPCI issues sorted somewhat, but not perfectly in comparison to 5.x etc. Either way, the short version here is, yes QLOGIC cards and booting from them work fine, if it's an HS20, don't expect a straight forward install!=20 -Noel -----Original Message----- From: owner-freebsd-scsi@freebsd.org [mailto:owner-freebsd-scsi@freebsd.org] On Behalf Of Tom Samplonius Sent: Monday, February 06, 2006 5:39 PM To: freebsd-scsi@freebsd.org Subject: Qlogic fibre channel support questions I'm planning to buy some IBM servers with Qlogic fibre channel adaptors in=20 them, and I have questions: * Does the isp driver support full fabric? I'd like to connect a FreeBSD system to an IBM NAS system, using a FibreChannel connection. I can find two supported drivers in the system, mpt(4) and isp(4). It seems to me, none of them supports multipath, something we need. Is this a false assumption? Are there other drivers that do support multipath? Recommendations apprecieated. If not, an alternative would be iSCSI, but I have no experience and it seems it is hardly implemented at all for FreeBSD, is that true? Windows is a bit different, since Windows tried to mount every device (no /etc/fstab file), so Windows HBA drivers typically need multipath control to hide the fact that a single logical disk is visible on multiple channels. With multipath, you typically just see the logical disk on two separate channels (separate LUNs). Depending on your disk controller, you might need "trespass" support in the OS/driver, but that seems rare these days. So you can either do a cold multipath, by having the second path listed in your /etc/fstab, but leave it commented out, until you need to use the second path. Now, in FreeBSD you could also multipath in the GEOM layer. GEOM knows about devices going away, and knows how to handle that (ex. gmirror). There is some support in GEOM for round-robin IO to two devices. However, phk has reported that the isp driver can hang forever on some timeouts, so it might not be useful. And I don't even know if GEOM round-robin is even finished. It might an idea for a few people to get together some dollars for a sponsership on FreeBSD SAN support, specifically: - isp driver updates (timeout handling) - Multipath support support, either in CAM SCSI layer or in GEOM disk layer. There has been great results on some other sponserships. The right way to do it is in CAM, either at the transport layer level or the peripheral driver level. To get true multipathing support, there is a reasonable amount of SCSI-specific stuff that you need to do to identify which devices are actually multiple paths to the same device, and also which path to that device should be used. That stuff would be a lot easier to do inside CAM, so we could just export the same basic disk API that we do currently. e.g. da0 would actually point to two or more paths to the same device, and would use information from those devices to determine which paths to use. (You can have an active/passive device, an active/active device where one path is preferred, or an active/active device where it doesn't matter which path you use...) The quicker way to do it is in GEOM, and Poul-Henning has already been talking about getting GEOM_FOX working to do basic multipathing. Hey, if anybody is willing to take the money, I've got some waiting... We use the isp driver a lot at Ironport.com, and would LOVE multipathing, or even just a better way to handle a WWPN going away and then coming back somewhere else. Last year, I got some budget to throw at somebody, but the person who we were talking to didn't have the time to do it. I'm pretty sure I could get some of that $$ again. Who can do the work, how much will it take, and who else is interested? Anybody? :-) Thanks, and have fun! -tspencer From owner-freebsd-scsi@FreeBSD.ORG Wed Feb 8 01:48:02 2006 Return-Path: X-Original-To: freebsd-scsi@freebsd.org Delivered-To: freebsd-scsi@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 06DAD16A420 for ; Wed, 8 Feb 2006 01:48:02 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from tspencer@hungry.com) Received: from terror.hungry.com (terror.hungry.com [199.181.107.40]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id B800743D48 for ; Wed, 8 Feb 2006 01:48:01 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from tspencer@hungry.com) Received: from [10.251.17.233] (nat.ironport.com [63.251.108.100]) (AUTH: LOGIN tspencer, TLS: TLSv1/SSLv3,128bits,RC4-SHA) by terror.hungry.com with esmtp; Tue, 07 Feb 2006 17:48:01 -0800 Mime-Version: 1.0 (Apple Message framework v746.2) Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Message-Id: <5EE96EFA-FF04-4542-A5BF-F60F2EA78D52@hungry.com> Content-Type: text/plain; charset=US-ASCII; delsp=yes; format=flowed To: freebsd-scsi@freebsd.org From: Tim Spencer Date: Tue, 7 Feb 2006 17:47:24 -0800 X-Mailer: Apple Mail (2.746.2) Subject: Speaking of Fibre-channel problems... Does it also happen with the 32bit version of FreeBSD? Is it possibly a 4+GB RAM problem where the isp driver has problems accessing high memory? You might want to try the 32bit version, and limiting FreeBSD to 3.5GB of RAM. I've heard that the mpt driver had (or still has) 4+GB memory problems. In the meantime, I need to gather some numbers on the current adaptec stuff that we're running. I'm aware of bonnie/bonnie++ and IOZone. bonnie doesn't really seem thorough enough for what we want to test for (random reads/writes), and IOZone forces you to do some ugly contortions in MS Excel to get any decent graphs. We're mainly looking for a controller to pair up with a few Postgres database hosts. We are leaning heavily towards the latest and greatest from 3Ware and Areca. They are SATA, but are getting lots of praise from folks on the postgres-performance list. This is apparently not so much because of the underlying disk technology (SATA vs. SCSI), but because both vendors are just putting much more modern processors on their RAID cards compared to the rather anemic stuff that LSI, Adaptec, et al. use. So what do folks here use to get detailed data on a raid array? Yeah, I'll try that tomorrow (I've been railroaded into deploying a new product today), and let everybody know. It is an 8gb machine, so maybe there is some sort of high memory issue. Doesn't seem to be initialized. Also, if you want to perform a sequential write test, it is better to use a larger block size than the default 512. For example: bs=51200 count=1000 > rm -f $i.iso > START=`expr $START+1` Better avoid fork/exec of expr(1), because you probably don't want to benchmark that. ;-) You can use the shell's arithmetic expansion: START=$(( $START + 1 )) (OK, I admit that the overhead of forking expr(1) is _much_ smaller than the dd(1) call.) > Time of executing this scripts: > FreeBSD: 149m 28s > Linux: 97m 13s Well, so Linux is about 33% faster. That's not an order of magnitude. It could be explained by differences in the file system parameters. By the way, what kind of file system did you use on FreeBSD and Linux? What parameters did you use with newfs? In fact, the difference could also be caused by the harddisks not being the same. And even if they are the same models, the location of your test files on the harddisk can be different. Most harddisks are much faster when files are stored on the lower cylinders. I don't think the difference is caused by the SCSI code. Best regards Oliver -- Oliver Fromme, secnetix GmbH & Co. It was fixed with FBSD 5.3 STABLE-2. FreeBSD 5.4 runs also perfect on these machines. But in the new version of FreeBSD the same bug comes again.=20 On the production machines it is impossible to install or upgrade the new FreeBSD 6 to do more tests. Please send an email if more information is needed, but let me say again: these machines are production servers. I don't have the possibility to compile any kernels or change adapters. Many thanks for your help. Best regards J=C3=BCrgen [/cite] These symptoms are still existing, but now with FreeBSD 6.1 Beta 1!!! Meanwhile our servers are updated to FreeBSD 5.4, the last version which = runs perfectly. Regards J=C3=BCrgen -- This e-mail was scanned with a private, non-commercial version of AntiVir MailGate.
