Anybody have time to add this to the > right places? Google News reveals that there have been approximately 2 or 3 FreeBSD related products being announced every week (i.e., products that are either appliances based on FreeBSD, or packages that run on FreeBSD, like the Win4BSD product mentioned in this thread). Clearly, these press releases are good advocacy material for the project, but being corporate press releases, they tend to mention FreeBSD only in the passing (if at all). The question then is, where do we place this material: - "press.xml" usually contains press articles referencing the FreeBSD project and its derivative projects. I.e., it has a project-centric focus. Adding corporate press releases here would clutter it up. - we have a rather boring commercial section that lists corporate entities that are offering products and services related to FreeBSD. We usually add entries here only on request (e.g., a PR being filed), and appliance makers may not care about being listed here anyhow. My gut feel is that we should have a separate page in the advocacy section listing such 3rd-party announcements, with perhaps an auto-generated column listing the top 'n' such announcements on the front page of our website. Such an arrangement would help the advocacy folks too, since it would bring this information "in focus", as opposed to be being buried among other material. -- FreeBSD Volunteer, http://people.freebsd.org/~jkoshy/ From owner-freebsd-www@FreeBSD.ORG Tue Sep 26 04:19:20 2006 Return-Path: X-Original-To: www@FreeBSD.org Delivered-To: freebsd-www@FreeBSD.ORG Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 8531716A5CA for ; Tue, 26 Sep 2006 04:19:20 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from bu7cher@yandex.ru) Received: from smtp1.yandex.ru (smtp1.yandex.ru [213.180.223.87]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 9AFA943D53 for ; Tue, 26 Sep 2006 04:19:19 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from bu7cher@yandex.ru) Received: from mail.kirov.so-cdu.ru ([81.18.142.225]:10512 "EHLO [127.0.0.1]" smtp-auth: "bu7cher" TLS-CIPHER: "DHE-RSA-AES256-SHA keybits 256/256 version TLSv1/SSLv3" TLS-PEER-CN1: ) by mail.yandex.ru with ESMTP id S2078077AbWIZETJ (ORCPT ); Tue, 26 Sep 2006 08:19:09 +0400 X-Comment: RFC 2476 MSA function at smtp1.yandex.ru logged sender identity as: bu7cher Message-ID: <4518AA3C.1040303@yandex.ru> Date: Tue, 26 Sep 2006 08:19:08 +0400 From: "Andrey V. It is emphasized on platforms/alpha.html as well. Anyway, I'm not affected by this, so you can set this suspended if you think so, I'm just realized it is not quite true, that Alpha is fully supported. -- Cheers, Gabor From owner-freebsd-www@FreeBSD.ORG Fri Sep 29 22:11:50 2006 Return-Path: X-Original-To: www@FreeBSD.org Delivered-To: freebsd-www@FreeBSD.ORG Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 4426316A40F; Fri, 29 Sep 2006 22:11:50 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from danger@FreeBSD.org) Received: from virtual.micronet.sk (smtp.micronet.sk [84.16.32.237]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id CBF6343D46; Fri, 29 Sep 2006 22:11:49 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from danger@FreeBSD.org) Received: from localhost (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by virtual.micronet.sk (Postfix) with ESMTP id EC64210E530; Sat, 30 Sep 2006 00:11:19 +0200 (CEST) X-Virus-Scanned: by amavisd-new at virtual.micronet.sk Received: from virtual.micronet.sk ([127.0.0.1]) by localhost (virtual.micronet.sk [127.0.0.1]) (amavisd-new, port 10024) with ESMTP id 5xNt6Vi6MbDs; Sat, 30 Sep 2006 00:11:18 +0200 (CEST) Received: from danger.mcrn.sk (danger.mcrn.sk [84.16.37.254]) by virtual.micronet.sk (Postfix) with ESMTP id 2B07A10E517; Sat, 30 Sep 2006 00:11:18 +0200 (CEST) Date: Sat, 30 Sep 2006 00:11:47 +0200 From: Daniel Gerzo Organization: The FreeBSD Project X-Priority: 3 (Normal) Message-ID: <1152359325.20060930001147@rulez.sk> To: www@FreeBSD.org MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Cc: glebius@FreeBSD.org Subject: Discussion: FreeBSD.org search engine X-BeenThere: freebsd-www@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list Reply-To: Daniel Gerzo List-Id: FreeBSD Project Webmasters List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Fri, 29 Sep 2006 22:11:50 -0000 Hello dear subscribers, it has been already few times discussed that our current search implementation, even despite of some work done to get the issues fixed, does not work quite ideal and that we should switch to some other search engine out there. It has been proposed to use either google.com or yahoo.com searchers, but neither of these two were picked up, either because of political, technical or some other reasons that I'm not going to describe in this email. What I want to bring to the discussion is a pretty nice service that is currently hosted at (IIRC) the second biggest russian search company, Rambler. It is currently available through http://freebsd.rambler.ru/ and provides fairly sophisticated FreeBSD mailing list search. I have already contacted glebius@ who works at Rambler (and he is not the only FreeBSD committer working there) and it seems like Rambler would like to support FreeBSD with their search engine. One of the problems that has been revealed is that Rambler is currently missing English help. On the other hand, glebius@ has already called Russian committers for help and there are at least 3-4 of them willing to help with translation to English. The other thing might be that the Rambler search engine binary must not be leaked; that means if Rambler provided the binary to us in any possible way, it will certainly not be available for everyone of us. Currently, we are not aware of way to make Rambler to search in more specific mailing lists, say freebsd-doc and freebsd-www; only in one at the moment. It is essential to be able to limit search queries to more maling lists and glebius@ is quiet sure that will not be a problem at all. He also noted, that the Rambler developer will add any additional functionality that would be needed. I have also asked, if it is possible to search FreeBSD.org web site with Rambler. I have been told, that currently that is not the case, but the code is prepared. It just needs to be enabled to index the pages. Now, what I would like to hear from you guys is, what do you think about Rambler -- do you like the idea? What do you see as a requirement for us to be able to switch to Rambler? Reasons that would prevent us to take a step forward and improve our web and mailing list search? -- Best regards, Daniel mailto:danger@FreeBSD.org From owner-freebsd-www@FreeBSD.ORG Sat Sep 30 22:47:16 2006 Return-Path: X-Original-To: www@FreeBSD.org Delivered-To: freebsd-www@FreeBSD.ORG Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 9D44F16A403; Sat, 30 Sep 2006 22:47:16 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from peer.schaefer@hamburg.de) Received: from luv.int-rz.hamburg.de (frontend-1.hamburg.de [212.1.41.126]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 37B8C43D45; Sat, 30 Sep 2006 22:47:13 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from peer.schaefer@hamburg.de) Received: from [85.176.182.120] (helo=[192.168.1.102]) by luv.int-rz.hamburg.de (envelope-from ) with esmtpa (Exim 4.52) id 1GTnc0-000449-Gd; Sun, 01 Oct 2006 00:47:12 +0200 Message-ID: <451EF3EE.2000707@hamburg.de> Date: Sun, 01 Oct 2006 00:47:10 +0200 From: Peer Schaefer User-Agent: Thunderbird 1.5.0.7 (X11/20060922) MIME-Version: 1.0 To: freebsd-advocacy@freebsd.org Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-15; format=flowed Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Cc: www@FreeBSD.org Subject: CDROM-Artwork (3) X-BeenThere: freebsd-www@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list List-Id: FreeBSD Project Webmasters List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Sat, 30 Sep 2006 22:47:16 -0000 Hello once more, some time ago (2006-09-01 and -02) I posted some CDROM-labels and CDROM-sleeves (envelopes) for FreeBSD. I received some kind comments and modified my drafts. Modifications include: * Now compliant with the logo-guidelines: the "FreeBSD" text/logo is now single-color white (not a white "Free" with a red "BSD" as in the first draft). * To bring back a "daemonic"-red ;-) the version number is now RED. * The background-colors are a little bit brighter now (the old colors looked great on a monitor but were overly dark on printouts). The text is stolen from the FreeBSD-website. The remaining artwork is by me. I hereby donate my part of the artwork to the FreeBSD project, so you may use and distribute it under any license you may choose, e.g. under the BSD-license (you may even place it in the Public Domain). Unless the FreeBSD project chooses some other license, the FreeBSD license (http://www.freebsd.org/copyright/freebsd-license.html) applies. It would be nice if you give me some credit, but that's not legaly required. I would be pleased if these material could be placed at the website (e.g. http://www.freebsd.org/art.html). I would suggest putting a link to the artwork page in the downloads section, so that everyone who downloads an ISO-image can easily obtain the label and sleeve. Best regards, Peer
