It's generally working great, but acpi_smbus_read_2: AE_ERROR 0x10 pops up on the console several times per minute. It doesn't seem to hurt anything, but it fills up the dmesg buffer and just doesn't seem right. Does it ring any bells? What add'l info can I provide that might help shut it up? Thanks, g. It's the acpi_smbat device (smart battery). For some reason, your system is reporting an error when it reads the battery status every 10 seconds or so. I don't know much about the SMbus status codes. You could start by posting your dmesg (AE_ERROR messages trimmed for size). -Nate From owner-freebsd-acpi@FreeBSD.ORG Sun Jul 15 23:25:45 2007 Return-Path: X-Original-To: freebsd-acpi@freebsd.org Delivered-To: freebsd-acpi@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [69.147.83.52]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id C5CB816A402 for ; Sun, 15 Jul 2007 23:25:45 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from hartzell@alerce.com) Received: from merlin.alerce.com (merlin.alerce.com [64.62.142.94]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id AF83013C461 for ; Sun, 15 Jul 2007 23:25:45 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from hartzell@alerce.com) Received: from merlin.alerce.com (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by merlin.alerce.com (Postfix) with ESMTP id 1FCFD33C5D; Sun, 15 Jul 2007 16:26:03 -0700 (PDT) Received: from postfix.alerce.com (w092.z064001164.sjc-ca.dsl.cnc.net [64.1.164.92]) (using TLSv1 with cipher DHE-RSA-AES256-SHA (256/256 bits)) (Client CN "satchel.alerce.com", Issuer "alerce.com" (verified OK)) by merlin.alerce.com (Postfix) with ESMTP id C35B433C5B; Sun, 15 Jul 2007 16:26:02 -0700 (PDT) Received: by postfix.alerce.com (Postfix, from userid 501) id 1E418FB148; Sun, 15 Jul 2007 16:25:46 -0700 (PDT) From: George Hartzell MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Message-ID: <18074.44281.478078.454771@almost.alerce.com> Date: Sun, 15 Jul 2007 16:25:45 -0700 To: Nate Lawson In-Reply-To: <469AA815.9060906@root.org> References: <18074.33681.27885.568308@almost.alerce.com> <469AA815.9060906@root.org> X-Mailer: VM 7.19 under Emacs 22.1.1 X-Virus-Scanned: ClamAV using ClamSMTP Cc: freebsd-acpi@freebsd.org Subject: Re: acpi_smbus_read_2: AE_ERROR 0x10 on a Mac Pro running -STABLE X-BeenThere: freebsd-acpi@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list Reply-To: hartzell@alerce.com List-Id: ACPI and power management development List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Sun, 15 Jul 2007 23:25:45 -0000 Nate Lawson writes: > George Hartzell wrote: > > Hi, > > > > I have an 8-way Mac Pro running -STABLE csup'ed a few weeks ago. I've put dmesg -v, dmesg, sysctl hw.acpi, and acpidump -dt output at: http://shrimp.alerce.com/misc/delicious-dmesg-verbose.txt http://shrimp.alerce.com/misc/macpro.asl http://shrimp.alerce.com/misc/delicious-dmesg.txt http://shrimp.alerce.com/misc/sysctl.hw.acpi The top of the dmesg -v output seems to have scrolled out of the buffer. As far as ath(4), if you fix this problem then ath(4) on ACPI will likely run into the HAL issue that it runs into with ACPI disabled. It looks like I can add a MSGBUF_SIZE option to my kernel config and bump up the size of the buffer. Don't know what the downside would be if I make it too big, but I'll give it a try if it's useful. Nate, is there info that you're missing up at the top of my verbose dmesg output? Suspend works great using "acpiconf -s 3", but my laptop doesn't come back from resume. I can hear the HD, and DVD drive restarting, but the LCD screen doesn't turn on and keys like numlock, caps, etc, doesn't work either so I have to reset the laptop. I tried with debug.acpi.suspend_bounce = 1, and it "bounces" ok without any error messages. I also tried setting debug.acpi.resume_beep = 1 but I hear no beep whatsoever at any time of the broken suspend/resume process. What should I try now? Please give me any hint about what do to next, since I couldn't find any documentation about this and I've been stuck in this problem since I moved to FreeBSD. This is a good summary. My perspective from the FreeBSD side: * We don't have suspend-to-disk yet except for the couple systems that supported S4BIOS. If it was implemented, it would be a much more reliable than suspend-to-ram. This is a major project, hence it hasn't been done yet. * I agree most suspend-to-ram issues are devices/drivers, not ACPI. Often, it's the case that our drivers are incomplete or lacking quirks for particular buggy devices, not bugs in the drivers themselves. However, issues like with video are awaiting more help from DRM and the modesetting project. * Hotkeys are solved by loading the acpi_ibm/panasonic/asus/whatever driver. We do still need a central way of adapting the device-specific keys to general key events. Not a hard project, but one that needs a lot of research into Gnome, KDE, HAL, etc. to see what users expect and how to link it to common UIs. * We should investigate using the RTC for the timer interrupt. Also, the HPET has an interrupt mode that might be useful. * I've submitted errata to the ACPI standards effort, cc'd to the Linux list and Intel developers. No changes have been made in that area over 3 revs of the spec. I disagree that the ACPI spec incorporates much, if any, community input. Perhaps there is now a new contact but I'm not aware of them. * Linux Firmware kit (http://www.linuxfirmwarekit.org/) Great stuff if people use it. We benefit from the acpi-ca compliance. * ACPI-CA is still changing a lot in fundamental ways, i.e. locking. The APIs have to be reworked every 3rd revision or so. Unfortunately since we have a lot of support code Linux does not, we end up hostage to the least common denominator (i.e semaphores vs. mutexes, hard-coded lock order in ACPI-CA itself vs. WITNESS). * Native MSR access for the acpi cpufreq module. Hey, nice. I didn't see this revision before. Chapter 3 is new and will help us make SpeedStep work on newer systems. * Your help -- still needed! -Nate From owner-freebsd-acpi@FreeBSD.ORG Thu Jul 19 05:57:03 2007 Return-Path: X-Original-To: freebsd-acpi@hub.freebsd.org Delivered-To: freebsd-acpi@hub.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [69.147.83.52]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 323E616A401; Thu, 19 Jul 2007 05:57:03 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from linimon@FreeBSD.org) Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (freebsd.org [69.147.83.40]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 0AD6913C442; Thu, 19 Jul 2007 05:57:03 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from linimon@FreeBSD.org) Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (linimon@localhost [127.0.0.1]) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.14.1/8.14.1) with ESMTP id l6J5v23J029411; Thu, 19 Jul 2007 05:57:02 GMT (envelope-from linimon@freefall.freebsd.org) Received: (from linimon@localhost) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.14.1/8.14.1/Submit) id l6J5v2Lk029407; Thu, 19 Jul 2007 05:57:02 GMT (envelope-from linimon) Date: Thu, 19 Jul 2007 05:57:02 GMT Message-Id: <200707190557.l6J5v2Lk029407@freefall.freebsd.org> To: linimon@FreeBSD.org, freebsd-bugs@FreeBSD.org, freebsd-acpi@FreeBSD.org From: linimon@FreeBSD.org Cc: Subject: Re: kern/114722: [acpi] Nearly duplicate p-state entries reported X-BeenThere: freebsd-acpi@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list List-Id: ACPI and power management development List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Thu, 19 Jul 2007 05:57:03 -0000 Synopsis: [acpi] Nearly duplicate p-state entries reported Responsible-Changed-From-To: freebsd-bugs->freebsd-acpi Responsible-Changed-By: linimon Responsible-Changed-When: Thu Jul 19 05:56:54 UTC 2007 Responsible-Changed-Why: Over to maintainer(s). http://www.freebsd.org/cgi/query-pr.cgi?pr=114722 From owner-freebsd-acpi@FreeBSD.ORG Thu Jul 19 23:45:21 2007 Return-Path: Delivered-To: acpi@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::34]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id BDEDC16A417 for ; Thu, 19 Jul 2007 23:45:21 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from SRS1=d958a025e5f2fe411da387cb0c02365a2afd06f1=es.net==d958a025e5f2fe411da387cb0c02365a2afd06f1=399=es.net=oberman@es.net) Received: from postal1.es.net (postal1.es.net [IPv6:2001:400:14:3::6]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 35D6C13C45D for ; Thu, 19 Jul 2007 23:45:21 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from SRS1=d958a025e5f2fe411da387cb0c02365a2afd06f1=es.net==d958a025e5f2fe411da387cb0c02365a2afd06f1=399=es.net=oberman@es.net) Received: from postal1.es.net (postal4.es.net [198.124.252.66]) by postal1.es.net (Postal Node 1) with ESMTP Return-Path: Received: from postal1.es.net (postal2.es.net [198.128.3.206]) by postal4.es.net (Postal Node 4) with ESMTP (SSL) id WXS46903 for ;Return-Path: Received: from ptavv.es.net (ptavv.es.net [198.128.4.29]) by postal2.es.net (Postal Node 2) with ESMTP (SSL) id WXS00601 for ; Tue, 17 Jul 2007 09:27:01 -0700 Received: from ptavv.es.net (ptavv.es.net [127.0.0.1]) by ptavv.es.net (Tachyon Server) with ESMTP id A778045045 for ; Tue, 17 Jul 2007 09:27:00 -0700 (PDT) To: acpi@freebsd.org Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: multipart/signed; boundary="==_Exmh_1184689620_68439P"; micalg=pgp-sha1; protocol="application/pgp-signature" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Date: Tue, 17 Jul 2007 09:27:00 -0700 From: "Kevin Oberman" Message-Id: <20070717162700.A778045045@ptavv.es.net> Cc: Subject: "Interesting" behavior of ACPI power management on T43 with CURRENT X-BeenThere: freebsd-acpi@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list List-Id: ACPI and power management development List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Thu, 19 Jul 2007 23:45:21 -0000 --==_Exmh_1184689620_68439P Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Disposition: inline My system seems to have grown added power management capabilities without cpufreq and maybe powerd. The behavior of my laptop (Lenovo/IBM T43) as regards power management with CURRENT is suddenly very different. I am pretty sure that this behavior first appeared in the past few months, so come change in FreeBSD (probably in ACPI code) triggered the change. Adding cpufreq to the system really breaks a lot of things since the module mis-identifies my system and sets all of the values for freq wrong. (It lies as I have confirmed that it is running at 2GHz when FreeBSD claims it is running 1.5 GHz and loses all of the energy values. They show up as -1. My system has a 2GHz Pentium-M CPU. I am not loading cpufreq or anything else specificly targeted at power management, but I do run the Gnome Power Manager which may be involved. I have no ACPI related items built into the kernel. Here is a list of loaded modules: kernel vesa.ko geom_eli.ko crypto.ko zlib.ko linux.ko snd_ich.ko sound.ko acpi_video.ko acpi.ko wlan_scan_sta.ko acpi_ibm.ko wlan_wep.ko if_ath.ko ath_rate.ko ath_hal.ko logo_saver.ko radeon.ko drm.ko ntfs.ko cpufreq.ko is not there. I suspect that this is simply the sysctl not getting updated when the maximum clock speed is dropped top 800 MHz. (this kind of implies powerd is NOT involved in all of this.) My CPU acts like it is under control of powerd, but: 762 ?? Ss 0:01.06 /usr/sbin/powerd -a maximum In the past, I saw a maximum speed of 2GHz on either AC or battery and my system never dropped the CPU speed while on AC. This changes has really improved the battery life of my system and I like it, I am simply baffled as to why it is doing it and if it is ThinkPad specific or if others are seeing this. -- R. Is it possible that you have done BIOS update between then and now? Another alternative could be that ACPI code started calling some ASL it did not call before -- at some point I used to own laptop where fan control was neatly tucked in the _TMP method, so every time system will ask BIOS for the temperature sensor readout, fan speed will get adjusted. New very strange facts. When used in Standard mode, ICH7 controller works fine and there is no interrupt storm. I appears only in RAID mode. I am afraid that my programming skills are too bad to fix ata driver. Maybe I can ask for help some FreeBSD developers? Maybe there is someone who is interested in debugging this driver? ;) Buy the way, someone wrote my a week ago (I've lost his email), he has the really the same problem and can't find solution also. --- P.S. I tried to use external PCI controlles, but they (e.g. Promise tx4310) have very poor BIOS'es nowadays, and I decided that software RAID like this are really waste of money. atacontrol can't deal with them normally, software support is quite poor. Since getting sound working required HDA support, which is missing in 6.2-RELEASE but present in 6-STABLE, I've cvsup'ed to RELENG_6, rebuilt world and kernel. And that's where the problems begin (userland + kernel sources as of 17 July). With ACPI enabled, boot process hangs (in rc stage, so I'm generally (but not always, especially during verbose boot) able to skip the problematic steps with ^C). Even if I manage to login afterwards, there's no network for me, mouse does not work, resume does not work (reset_video hack did not help), and it's often not possible to reboot the system with Ctrl-Alt-Del (soft-off works, though). If I wait long enough during startup (no Ctrl-C's), the system will eventually hang completely. It usually hangs after bge0 tells it's UP (but I never see "got link" message that normally appear afterwards). Like I said, boot -v gives even less chance to get down to login prompt (even so, it's not always possible to log in). In 90% of cases, only soft-off (power button) helps (it cleanly shuts the system down). In fact, recent few times I tried, it always ended up hanging). Replacing acpi.ko from -RELEASE kernel makes -STABLE kernel boot fine. Since I'm currently cannot boot even into single user with new kernel, sysctl and ASL are collected while booted with vanilla acpi.ko from 6.2-RELEASE. Disabling ACPI makes all of these go away, but I a) need APIC for sound card to show up, and b) I'd really want that suspend/resume and PM stuff to work. :-) Switching to APM did not help either (zzz(8) complains about "missing /dev/apm", power button acts as instant off). Interestingly enough, 6.2-RELEASE used to boot fine with ACPI enabled. No weird compilation flags were used to recompile the -STABLE kernel (both slim custom kernel and GENERIC were tested, -STABLE does not work for me). Either -STABLE became more picky about [in]correct ACPI implementation, of something was broken after 6.2-RELEASE went gold. Vanilla 6.2-RELEASE GENERIC kernel works fine (with fresh -STABLE userland). Disabling USB, sound, NIC driver, et al does not help. BIOS updated to most recent version available on vendor's site (ver. 3A23 as of 10-10-2006). I'm attaching dmesg(8) of verbose boot with ACPI on and off, sysctl hw.acpi. is there too (doing that causes of lost of "ACPI-1287: *** Error: Method execution failed"-type of message from kernel, those are attached as well). My ASL can be found here: http://193.124.210.26/danfe-nec_versa_s950.asl I also must admit I did not quite get this piece of advice from the Handbook: The simplest first check you can do is to recompile your ASL to check for errors. Warnings can usually be ignored but errors are bugs that will usually prevent ACPI from working correctly. To recompile your ASL, issue the following command: # iasl your.asl Does it mean that decompiling/recompiling ASL can probably cure something for me? I did not try this one. I am also yet to compile debug kernel, but I first need to get FireWire setup (laptop has no COM ports, and I lack IrDA adapter in my desktop). Attached files: dmesg_acpi dmesg(8) output after boot -v dmesg_no_acpi dmesg(8) (boot -v), ACPI disabled sysctl_hw_acpi Output from sysctl hw.acpi. sysctl_hw_acpi_errors Errors while invoking sysctl They're all available via HTTP, use the URL given above.
