The last sensible output of the install is below my signature. It seems to me that the problem arises from the command /usr/local/bin/pygtk-codegen-2.0 trying to operate on the file /usr/local/share/pygth/2.0/defs/pango-types.defs, which does not exist on my system. I've tried to find this file somewhere, or a reference/pointer to further information about this file, with no success. Put another way, there is a shortcoming in the installation script for gnome2 on FreeBSD 6.2 release that you might wish to know about. I've done a "portsnap fetch update", and am trying to install gnome2 with the command "portupgrade -N gnome2" without any success. Your help would be appreciated. Mike -- Mike Lawrie. You might want to ask on x11@ (there may be other ports to recompile). The screensavers (the hacks, that is) haven't changed in a long time, and all the GL modules work just fine for me with nvidia, radeonhd, and i810 drivers. If you're using gnome-screensaver, you shouldn't even have xscreensaver-gnome installed. Instead, you should just have xscreensaver-gnome-hacks installed. The file did not exist on my system, in the end in desperation I did a touch to create a zero-length file, it now looks like this:- ls -l /usr/local/share/pygtk/2.0/defs/pango-types.defs -r--r--r-- 1 root wheel 0 Nov 27 12:33 /usr/local/share/pygtk/2.0/defs/pango-types.defs The builds of ports now progress much further, but just how usable they will be remains to be seen. Seems like it's going to take days to catch up. I installed the package (portupgrade -PP gnome2, if I remember correctly), which uses out of date packages which now all require further updating which I'm doing via ports. Given that when/if pango-types.defs does not exist for whatever good or bad reason, the build crashes due to pygtk-codegen-2.0 failing, there is a dependency that should be checked somewhere during/before the build, and an instruction sequence fired off to create any missing files. Either that or I'm misunderstanding the purpose of a Makefile (which is quite possible). > Please follow complete in http://www.freebsd.org/gnome/docs/bugging.html > such as how did you reproduce (by show exactly command), what error in > output and everything what bugging.html has requested. I'm not sure that I'm going to follow the instructions in that URL, but I'll be guided by it. Thanks for the reference. Those instructions, coupled with the content of http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/books/handbook/ports- using.html, require me to run CVSup. As it will be run for the first time on my system, I've got to wipe out my /usr/ports directory and re-create an empty one for filling by CVSup. As mentioned, I'm using portsnap and portsupgrade as it gives me an easy interface. Even if following the instructions in the bugging.html results in a correct pango-types.defs file, the fact remains that the Makefile could do with some tweaking to fix the missing dependency. I've no objection if you regard this problem as closed until or if you get a report as per bugging.html, the logic (but not detail) of that file makes good sense. Regards Mike -- Mike Lawrie. The 80% > or 90% of problems are due users don't keep their installed ports up to > date or/and don't follow the /usr/ports/UPDATING. I'm sure that it's not easy from your end, but then it makes for one of the best types of computer games around! I started with "portsnap fetch update", and got to the point where "pkg-version -v" showed that everything was up to date. I then had a go at installing gnome. The comment of 20071024 in UPDATING did not apply, as I was not updating gnome, I was installing afresh. So I fired off "portupgrade -N gnome2", if memory serves correctly, and the processed crashed on that missing pango-types.defs. Among many other things, like trying to find a pango-types.defs file, searching google and elsewhere for any suggestions etc, I tried the instructions in UPDATING, but it made no difference. > > Even if following the instructions in the bugging.html results in a > > correct pango-types.defs file, the fact remains that the Makefile > > could do with some tweaking to fix the missing dependency. > > There is no tweak need as it installs fine by default in several of > tinderboxes. > > # grep pango-types\.defs /usr/ports/x11-toolkits/py-gtk2/pkg-plist > share/pygtk/2.0/defs/pango-types.defs I get the same result as your grep, but in fact none of the pango files referred to in that pkg-list are on my system. I've done a "cd /; ls -lgR > lslgR" and searched that lslgR file for those files, but no go. The output of "pkg_version -v" shows that the only references to pango are gstreamer-plugins-pango-0.10.10_1,2 < needs updating (port has 0.10.14_2,3) pango-1.18.3 = up-to-date with port pango-reference-1.18.3_1 = up-to-date with port There is no reference to py-gtk2, but there is this py25-gtk-2.12.0 = up-to-date with port Then, I had a go with "portupgrade -PP gnome2", and found a goodly number of packages to be out of date. So I'm now updating them, having had to create an empty pango-types.defs file to get past the crash relating to this file not being found. How one can reproduce this I know not, but I still say that the Makefile should check that all required files exist before attempting a build. I hope that this does not convey any impression of ingratitude, I really do appreciate greatly the efforts that folk like you have put into dealing with extremely complex software packages. Anyway, I'm now going to watch UEFA Cup soccer, and let the portupgrade of gnome2 run, until doomsday if necessary . It's > why anybody should be follow bugging.html, that way we can know what users > have installed ports in their system. Did you tweak the PACKAGESITE? Did > you tweak anything else? No tweaks by me, I'm trying to run a simple and standard system, but would like to have the apps compiled on my system rather than have packages downloaded that cause portaudit to bitch and so I'd have to re-compile from a port anyway. I too got a response of py25-gtk-2.12.0 to your make example. I then did a "pkg_delete py25-gtk-2.12.0" and a "portupgrade -N py25-gtk- 2.12.0", and magically pango-types.defs and other pango files appeared in the defs directory. So presumably various programs now have a better chance of compiling. Don't ask me why pkg_version showed that py25-gtk-2.12.0 was installed properly when it was not. I did not delete those pango files. My system also had both python24-2.4.4_2 and python25-2.5.1_1 installed. I did not install either or both of them explicitly, I have no idea how to use python so I have no direct need to intall it. Those versions must have been installed as a result of a dependency of some kind when using "portupgrade -R some.package.or.other", and no indication was given that "some.package.or.other" was going to install a package that was listed in UPDATING for special treatment. The UPDATING file describes clearly how to install python25 when python24 is already installed, so I've now followed those instructions. This updating of packages/ports on FreeBSD leaves a LOT to be desired. The FreeBSD manual says to use portupgrade -R, but the process that is followed takes no notice of what is in UPDATING, so portupgrade simply installs what it likes and how it likes. The gnome maintainers say to use "make" or a problem report will/may be rejected, so we are not all singing from the same hymnsheet, that's not good. Surely it's not beyond the wit of man to put something into a port's makefile when there is an alert in UPDATING, that something being there to stop the automatic installation via portupgrade when a problem will arise? Better still would be to code the UPDATING instructions into the makefile itself, this is not rocket science. Anyway, thanks for your patience and help, the problem of the missing pango-types.defs file is solved, and the case is closed. Regards Mike -- Mike Lawrie. I am addressing this to you as your e-mail is listed as the contact for the "evolution-exchange" FBSD port. I have used FreeBSD for last 9+ years, and recently customized my corporate laptop to run FBSD 7.0-BETA3 (i386). Given that I use the laptop for corporate business I have to talk to an Exchange 2003 server in my daily line of work. Everything w/ Evolution is working fine, but I find that I cannot talk to the Global Address List (GAL). I did a fair bit of troubleshooting on this matter, and it seems the issue lies in the fact that the evolution-exchange port cannot properly detect NTLM support in the OpenLDAP client (which I also installed from ports). My Exchange server requires crypto for all ADS communications, so I cannot use plain text communication for this login. The evolution-exchange source code has an old hack for OpenLDAP NTLM support (found under the "docs" directory in the source code). This hack, however, is for OpenLDAP 2.2.x and the evolution-exchange port uses an OpenLDAP 2.3.x client. I understand that NTLM is now supported in OpenLDAP 2.3.x, at least by means SASL. I have confirmed that my SASL port does include NTLM support, and I went so far as to change out the default OpenLDAP client installed by evolution-exchange w/ the openldap-cyrus client. Still no go since evolution-exchange does does not detect OpenLDAP NTLM support during the config of the port. I have tested this set-up under both FBSD 6.2 and FreeBSD 7.0-BETA 2 & 3 for both the i386 and AMD64 platforms. Same result in every case. I am now at a dead-end on this issue. As such, I was wondering if you folks have any known work-around for this issue. GAL access in Evolution is very important for me, so I would GREATLY appreciate any thoughts that you might have on this matter. I appreciate your time in reviewing this matter, and I look forward to your reply. Respectfully, Drew Berendts, CISSP T-Mobile USA, Inc. Either as root or kline, typing gdm as root brings up the gnome login widget; then it it at least 5 minutes before anything appears. Note that I'm running 6.3-PRERELEASE for the past few hours and will stop upgrading when 6.3 releases STABLE. I did have some trouble getting the /usr/ports/x11/gnome2 meta-port to build completely. And for a few days of head-banging, my new version hung because of incorrect BIOS settings: my computer was very touchy about "COM1" or sio0. So, this obvious question: could the Gone screen delay have anything to do with the hardware setting on this Dell 8200.
