The driver is under development, users might want to subscribe to radeonhd(at)opensuse(dot)org. The archive includes a utility conntest which prints the layout of the card connectors. This utility can be built manually by installing the devel/libpci port and running (g)make in utils/conntest. It is only needed in some rare, unanticipated cases. I've set the maintainer to this list, but I won't mind if I have to maintain it personally. I am trying to upgrade to modular X, so i can get all the fancy 3D desktop graphics i am used to, so i followed the instructions in /usr/ports/UPDATING for upgrading from 6.9 to 7.2, i have also tried building from ports neither of which has worked. Attached are the script files /usr/ports/UPDATING told me to record. charset=UTF-8 Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable Hi list, I don't actually know how to explain this problem in an understandable way... I have an external 24' Sun monitor running at 1280x800 plugged into my laptop (1280X800). I start X without the external monitor, I plug it in, and press the keys combination to enable it on my laptop. Everything looks fine on it. Then, I exit X, restart it, and some applications looks differently. Please look at [1] and [2] for partial screenshots before and after restarting X, at [3] for my xorg.conf and at [4] for my Xorg.0.log Any ideas? Thanks very much! You need to fix that first. Look through UPDATING for changes related to portupgrade and ruby. e.g. 20060703: AFFECTS: users of sysutils/portupgrade AUTHOR: sem@FreeBSD.org Because portupgrade had a problem with detecting Berkley DB version 2 or newer, and the default database format is now set to use these versions, you can end up with a portupgrade that does not work with older databases. A quick fix is to remove the databases, type: 'rm /var/db/pkg/pkgdb.db /usr/ports/INDEX*.db'. portupgrade will recreate them automatically. It does absolutely no harm. If you do not want remove the databases, you should detect what database type do you use, and set the port options for portupgrade accordingly. Follow these instructions: - run 'pkgdb -fu' *before* upgrading and take a look on the output. You can see database format there as: format:XXX, where XXX is your current database format. - Go to portupgrade port directory and configure the port with `make config' command. If you have bdb_* format, then turn on the BDB4 option. If you have bdb1_* format, then turn off BDB4 and turn on the BDB1 option. In addition, this is how all of my GNOME apps look when I try running them without gnome-settings-daemon. I suspect that when you X server restarted, your apps were not able to contact gnome-settings-daemon over DBUS and defaulted their fonts/rendering. Try this: 1) Start X.org again, after a fresh reboot 2) Exit X.org 3) Use ps auxww to see if there are any gnome related programs still running 4) Kill them all (a good trick I use is to log in as 'root' in another VT, and "killall -9 -u myusername") 5) Log in as your user again and try starting X.org (and the fonts should look like [1]) -- Coleman Kane From owner-freebsd-x11@FreeBSD.ORG Tue Oct 23 04:16:11 2007 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-x11@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::34]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id C038C16A418 for ; Tue, 23 Oct 2007 04:16:11 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from vehemens@verizon.net) Received: from vms044pub.verizon.net (vms044pub.verizon.net [206.46.252.44]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 8953413C4A7 for ; Tue, 23 Oct 2007 04:16:11 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from vehemens@verizon.net) Received: from susy.dsl-verizon.net ([71.107.22.75]) by vms044.mailsrvcs.net (Sun Java System Messaging Server 6.2-6.01 (built Apr 3 2006)) with ESMTPA id <0JQC005Q3JUH2JV1@vms044.mailsrvcs.net> for freebsd-x11@freebsd.org; Mon, 22 Oct 2007 23:15:54 -0500 (CDT) Date: Mon, 22 Oct 2007 21:15:56 -0700 From: vehemens In-reply-to: <1193067722.82735.9.camel@bbeng-laptop.acs.internap.com> To: "Robert C. I just built a fresh -current laptop and currently emerald is frequently segfaulting when I close a window. Specifically, If I close ccsm it hasn't failed to crash yet. I now have two displays, but the right display only runs at 1024x768 with the left runs at 1280x1024. If I try swapping the "Position" lines between monitor 0 and 1, I go back to the old mirror effect, with the right screen still at 1024x768. I get the following messages on my vty: WB: Reading 128K from /dev/mem address 0xc0000 info: [drm] Initialized card for AGP DMA drm0: [ITHREAD] [config/hal] couldn't initialise context: (null) ((null)) SESSION_MANAGER=local/pak.es.net:/tmp/.ICE-unix/98465 The only warning in the log is: (WW) OS did not count PCI devices, guessing wildly (WW) MGA(0): Option "Position" is not used I don't like the look of the latter error. Any ideas? I did edit the "Monitor" sections and tried both with explicit sync rates and commenting them out and using DCC. Made no difference. I must admit that I am baffled. Also, is xinerama no longer usable with the 7.3 and the G450? Or so you just prefer randr? (I can see that randr has advantages.) -- R. What should it be? The Position option in each monitor is supposed to define which part of the big virtual bitmap that monitor displays. But it depends on the size of the virtual bitmap and the resolution of the monitors. You can also change things live by running xrandr interactively: xrandr --output VGA2 --left-of VGA1 or something like that. I haven't experimented with it much. There's also a PreferredMode option for the Monitor section which might help: Option "PreferredMode" "1280x1024" > If I try swapping the "Position" lines between monitor 0 and 1, I go > back to the old mirror effect, with the right screen still at 1024x768. > I get the following messages on my vty: > WB: Reading 128K from /dev/mem address 0xc0000 Okay, that's good. > info: [drm] Initialized card for AGP DMA > drm0: [ITHREAD] > [config/hal] couldn't initialise context: (null) ((null)) > SESSION_MANAGER=local/pak.es.net:/tmp/.ICE-unix/98465 That's odd, and new to me. However, I use xdm and Xfce, so maybe it has to do with something else. Maybe a securelevel or hal configuration difference? No config/hal or SESSION_MANAGER in my log. > The only warning in the log is: > (WW) OS did not count PCI devices, guessing wildly > (WW) MGA(0): Option "Position" is not used > I don't like the look of the latter error. No, I see both of those messages in mine, too. (I only noticed the "not used" warning today. Maybe it's talking about the 0 0 as default?) > Any ideas? I did edit the "Monitor" sections and tried both with > explicit sync rates and commenting them out and using DCC. Made no > difference. I must admit that I am baffled. You can make monitor entries in the Device section to set default positions. Sorry, haven't really tried that, either (well, I tried it a couple of weeks ago on my T42 notebook with a Radeon--did not go well, locked up, but needs to be tried again). > Also, is xinerama no longer usable with the 7.3 and the G450? Or so you > just prefer randr? (I can see that randr has advantages.) I did have one person have problems trying to use both (without further details given). Xinerama is now automatically loaded, but I have plenty of questions about it myself. For instance, what happens if you have a dual-head G450 and add a PCI card for a third monitor--can they all be part of the same desktop? I borrowed some PCI cards yesterday, so maybe I'll be able to answer that. -Warren Block * Rapid City, South Dakota USA From owner-freebsd-x11@FreeBSD.ORG Wed Oct 24 04:57:44 2007 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-x11@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::34]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 94ED016A46B for ; Wed, 24 Oct 2007 04:57:44 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from vehemens@verizon.net) Received: from vms044pub.verizon.net (vms044pub.verizon.net [206.46.252.44]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 7F01C13C4B2 for ; Wed, 24 Oct 2007 04:57:44 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from vehemens@verizon.net) Received: from susy.dsl-verizon.net ([71.107.16.128]) by vms044.mailsrvcs.net (Sun Java System Messaging Server 6.2-6.01 (built Apr 3 2006)) with ESMTPA id <0JQE006K3GF7GE31@vms044.mailsrvcs.net> for freebsd-x11@freebsd.org; Tue, 23 Oct 2007 23:57:07 -0500 (CDT) Date: Tue, 23 Oct 2007 21:57:08 -0700 From: vehemens In-reply-to: <1193158470.1471.4.camel@rnoland-ibm.acs.internap.com> To: Robert Noland Message-id: <200710232157.08999.vehemens@verizon.net> MIME-version: 1.0 Content-type: text/plain; charset=iso-8859-1 Content-transfer-encoding: 7bit Content-disposition: inline References: <200709161632.32898.vehemens@verizon.net> <200710222115.56866.vehemens@verizon.net> <1193158470.1471.4.camel@rnoland-ibm.acs.internap.com> User-Agent: KMail/1.9.6 Cc: freebsd-x11@freebsd.org Subject: Re: Emerald Crashes (was: building compiz-fusion xml files from xml.in files) X-BeenThere: freebsd-x11@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list List-Id: X11 on FreeBSD -- maintaining and support List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Wed, 24 Oct 2007 04:57:44 -0000 On Tuesday 23 October 2007 09:54:30 am you wrote: > On Mon, 2007-10-22 at 21:15 -0700, vehemens wrote: > > On Monday 22 October 2007 08:42:02 am Robert C. I have found the problem, but not the solution. I just looked at the logs more carefully and found the following (which I think should have been tagged as WW): (II) MGA(0): Output VGA1 using monitor section Monitor0 (**) MGA(0): Option "Position" "1024 0" (II) MGA(0): Output VGA2 has no monitor section And the configuration has no reference to "Monitor1". I tried adding "Monitor1" to the Screen section, but that failed and left both monitors at 640x480 (ouch). Can anyone provide a clue as to how to get both monitors configured? I haven't experimented with it much. Works perfectly. I can swap screens, but the one on VGA2 remains at 1024x768. xranr --prop only lists: VGA2 connected 1024x768+0+0 0mm x 0mm 1024x768 60.0* 800x600 60.3 640x480 59.9 since it is not associated with any screen. > > There's also a PreferredMode option for the Monitor section which might > help: > > Option "PreferredMode" "1280x1024" I've tried this, but it says that the mode is not found. > > If I try swapping the "Position" lines between monitor 0 and 1, I go > > back to the old mirror effect, with the right screen still at 1024x768. > > > I get the following messages on my vty: > > WB: Reading 128K from /dev/mem address 0xc0000 > > Okay, that's good. > > > info: [drm] Initialized card for AGP DMA > > drm0: [ITHREAD] > > [config/hal] couldn't initialise context: (null) ((null)) > > SESSION_MANAGER=local/pak.es.net:/tmp/.ICE-unix/98465 > > That's odd, and new to me. I still get "Fatal server error:". No, I don't think it'll matter much. Tilman Sauerbeck was looking for feedback on how the older Matrox cards worked with the new driver: http://lists.freedesktop.org/archives/xorg-announce/2007-September/000404.html I had a 2164 (Millenium II) that didn't work either, which he now has. The usefulness of these older cards is limited. Most of them didn't include much video memory. My 2164 had only 2M, not enough for 1024x768 at 24-bit. -Warren Block * Rapid City, South Dakota USA From owner-freebsd-x11@FreeBSD.ORG Thu Oct 25 03:40:08 2007 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-x11@hub.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::34]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 7DB2916A420; I've experimented a bit more with my configuration. As I mentioned earlier, you can assign monitors to outputs in the Device section. What I found was that specifying HorizSync or VertRefresh in the Monitor section caused problems. What works: Section "Monitor" Identifier "Monitor0" VendorName "PNR" ModelName "Planar PE190" Option "Position" "1024 0" EndSection Section "Monitor" Identifier "Monitor1" VendorName "Philips" ModelName "Philips 150B3" Option "Position" "0 0" EndSection Section "Device" Identifier "Card0" Driver "mga" VendorName "Matrox Graphics, Inc." BoardName "MGA G400/G450" BusID "PCI:1:0:0" Option "HWcursor" "off" Option "AGPMode" "4" Option "Monitor-VGA1" "Monitor0" Option "Monitor-VGA2" "Monitor1" EndSection This runs both monitors at their DDC-detected resolution. In my case, that's 1280x1024 for Monitor0 and 1024x768 for Monitor1. If I tried to explicitly set a Mode for Monitor1, it went to 640x480. I got my configuration working using the "trial and error" method of debugging. In my case (Intel 945GM), I was successful using Driver "vesa" in my xorg.conf. If your curious, 7.0 supports the Intel Integrated video chipsets natively and the 915resolution port is unnecessary. Also, my stock xorg.conf generated by Xorg -configure gave me 1680x1050 resolution. Hope that helps... -- Regards, Doug From owner-freebsd-x11@FreeBSD.ORG Fri Oct 26 14:49:12 2007 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-x11@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::34]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id CF78D16A417 for ; Fri, 26 Oct 2007 14:49:12 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from tevans.uk@googlemail.com) Received: from qb-out-0506.google.com (qb-out-0506.google.com [72.14.204.225]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 772FE13C4A5 for ; Fri, 26 Oct 2007 14:49:12 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from tevans.uk@googlemail.com) Received: by qb-out-0506.google.com with SMTP id a10so696673qbd for ; Fri, 26 Oct 2007 07:49:11 -0700 (PDT) DKIM-Signature: v=1; a=rsa-sha256; c=relaxed/relaxed; d=googlemail.com; s=beta; h=domainkey-signature:received:received:subject:from:to:cc:in-reply-to:references:content-type:date:message-id:mime-version:x-mailer; bh=0dMDYnLQ/yu9xFtgSt9vgeRu95orsIw1jcTvSI8xCAc=; b=OkJClIG8wpsRucC4MWJnPwIpaeiHclbuMthTAngK1uaDbUlA9MMw2yqcKuyIY/uaWuMjrkr51dSxoNu7X2Ymzo5tArchw+rJuPrDbdiFvCG5sypOY5pnxHJR0g/N6g48QDL8eMq8pEU4sWqb9tE66LtQXZ05vGpxhcDfJ6caqps= DomainKey-Signature: a=rsa-sha1; c=nofws; d=googlemail.com; s=beta; h=received:subject:from:to:cc:in-reply-to:references:content-type:date:message-id:mime-version:x-mailer; b=A3vLa1FXb6/Fu7q0UJqqrduMpgGLbaQkLRnm4Bp2xIxHGuRF33F9CqyJYilXZCTKl7w93q9MI74LTtCYyijrRkRiIqWtKwuHqkiklgDykFtkR1np7O++Au3AqS1OgqW0wLImdcM+98ampi+2AO3uShOBZeb0N/kJpsH+9X6n080= Received: by 10.82.190.2 with SMTP id n2mr6332613buf.1193410149368; Fri, 26 Oct 2007 07:49:09 -0700 (PDT) Received: from ?127.0.0.1? Try installing at least version 2.0 of x11-drivers/xf86-video-intel (latest in ports is version 2.1.1), which has modesetting support and no longer requires 915resolution. What does work for me, as I previously posted (though referred to the wrong file in my post) is the solution presented in post number 13 at https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=12434 It entails changing line 680 of kbd.c from if (pKbd->noXkb) { to if (!pKbd->noXkb) { The post below it indicates that it could cause problems if you're rapidly pressing capslock several times in a row, (which seems a rather odd use of capslock, but...) however, as I don't rapidly hit capslock repeatedly, it hasn't been a problem. Comment 17 on that thread indicates it's a wrong solution. So, though it works for me, I thought it would be a bad idea to make a PR with patch. -- Scott Robbins PGP keyID EB3467D6 ( 1B48 077D 66F6 9DB0 FDC2 A409 FA54 EB34 67D6 ) gpg --keyserver pgp.mit.edu --recv-keys EB3467D6 Xander: Are you ready to get down, you funky party weasel?
