I upgraded from FreeBSD 6.2 to 7.0 (clean install), and from Xorg 7.2 to 7.3. Under FreeBSD 6.2/Xorg7.2, everything was fine, but 7.0/7.3 is causing troubles. Some things, such as the standard xorg background (seen when running the command 'X' from a console) and xterm ('xterm -display 0:0') work fine. However others, such as xdm, kdm, and konsole (all run with the '-display 0:0' option, or equivalent, do not. In these cases, the font is incredibly huge. Konsole, for example, only displays 5 lines of text for a full-screen height window, and the greeting text for xdm takes up between a third and half the screen hieight for one line. Another deviation: prior to the upgrade, X would only show on my external monitor or my notebook monitor, but not both. How it displays on both if I have the external (EXT) set, or just the notebook if I have the notebook (NB) screen set. In the latter case, it is because the monitor refuses to use the resolution/refresh settings (which is expected). I suspect my problem lies in this section of the Xorg.0.log file: (II) intel(0): Setting screen physical size to 289 x 22 (22mm high? Not likely). I set DisplaySize in my screen section, as recommended by the xorg.conf man page, but that did not fix the issue: Section "Monitor" Identifier "Monitor NB" VendorName "Toshiba" ModelName "SatelliteLCD" HorizSync 30.0 - 107.0 VertRefresh 50.0 - 185.0 Option "DPMS" #found this line via google, used to be needed to #get nb built-in monitor to work Modeline "1280x800" 159.74 1280 1296 1552 1664 800 800 815 835 #force monitor size DisplaySize 333 213 EndSection Section "Monitor" Identifier "Monitor EXT" VendorName "Samsung" ModelName "Synchmaster" HorizSync 30.0 - 81.0 VertRefresh 56.0 - 75.0 #force monitor size DisplaySize 386 290 EndSection The full xorg.conf and error log are at the end. The relevant port is x11-servers/xorg-server but that is automatically installed by x11/xorg so there is no need to install it by itself. If you have a recently updated ports tree then xorg-server uses the OPTIONS mechanism letting you choose if you want to use sysutils/hal or not. If you have an older ports tree you will have to specify 'WITHOUT_HAL=yes' on the commandline when you start the make. -- Erik Trulsson ertr1013@student.uu.se
