I think this is because of mp_ncpus being the real core number of the machine (ia64_count_cpus) and mp_maxid being the cores used (also number of pcpu-structs malloced in pcpu-struct). Also I think (on comparing to other architectures and usage in vcnt) that mp_ncpus should be the number of real active cores with malloced pcpu. So my quick-fix was to put following line after "mp_maxid = min(mp_ncpus, MAXCPU) - 1;": mp_ncpus = mp_maxid + 1; Regards, Marc Loerner From owner-freebsd-ia64@FreeBSD.ORG Thu Nov 20 09:03:44 2008 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-ia64@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::34]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id AE38C1065673 for ; Thu, 20 Nov 2008 09:03:44 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from prvs=12108519b9=marc.loerner@hob.de) Received: from mailgate.hob.de (mailgate.hob.de [212.185.199.3]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 463258FC13 for ; Thu, 20 Nov 2008 09:03:44 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from prvs=12108519b9=marc.loerner@hob.de) Received: from imap.hob.de (mail2.hob.de [172.25.1.102]) by mailgate.hob.de (Postfix) with ESMTP id E9F4152000B for ; Thu, 20 Nov 2008 09:42:17 +0100 (CET) Received: from linux03.hob.de (linux03.hob.de [172.22.0.190]) by imap.hob.de (Postfix on SuSE eMail Server 2.0) with ESMTP id A407FF55E6 for ; Thu, 20 Nov 2008 09:42:17 +0100 (CET) From: Marc =?iso-8859-1?q?L=F6rner?= Organization: hob To: freebsd-ia64@freebsd.org Date: Thu, 20 Nov 2008 09:43:40 +0100 User-Agent: KMail/1.6.2 MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Disposition: inline Content-Type: Multipart/Mixed; boundary="Boundary-00=_8MSJJ12FG44ZEXP" Message-Id: <200811200943.40672.marc.loerner@hob.de> Subject: sys/ia64/include/pcpu.h patch proposal X-BeenThere: freebsd-ia64@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list List-Id: Porting FreeBSD to the IA-64 List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Thu, 20 Nov 2008 09:03:44 -0000 --Boundary-00=_8MSJJ12FG44ZEXP Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Content-Disposition: inline Hello, attached is a patch of pcpu.h against current to make access of pcpu-structures preemption-ready (like in amd64). I thought that only curthread() is critical. All other PCPU accesses are sufficiently protected by context. Is that not the case? In other words, wouldn't it be enough to declare pcpup as volatile? Besides that: yes there's an atomicity problem getting to the PCPU. I'm not sure your patch fixes that because a thread can move to another CPU after obtaining the address of some field in the PCPU and before reading from that address. Unless all accesses are protected by context, in which case there's no problem now I think... --=20 Marcel Moolenaar xcllnt@mac.com From owner-freebsd-ia64@FreeBSD.ORG Fri Nov 21 03:36:11 2008 Return-Path: Delivered-To: ia64@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::34]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id C4E911065672; Fri, 21 Nov 2008 03:36:11 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from tinderbox@freebsd.org) Received: from smarthost1.sentex.ca (smarthost1.sentex.ca [64.7.153.18]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 94A7F8FC12; Fri, 21 Nov 2008 03:36:11 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from tinderbox@freebsd.org) Received: from smtp2.sentex.ca (smtp2c.sentex.ca [64.7.153.30]) by smarthost1.sentex.ca (8.14.3/8.14.3) with ESMTP id mAL3a9F0041778; Thu, 20 Nov 2008 22:36:09 -0500 (EST) (envelope-from tinderbox@freebsd.org) Received: from freebsd-current.sentex.ca (freebsd-current.sentex.ca [64.7.128.98]) by smtp2.sentex.ca (8.14.3/8.14.3) with ESMTP id mAL3a96o031813; Thu, 20 Nov 2008 22:36:09 -0500 (EST) (envelope-from tinderbox@freebsd.org) Received: by freebsd-current.sentex.ca (Postfix, from userid 666) id 3D07B73039; Thu, 20 Nov 2008 22:36:09 -0500 (EST) Sender: FreeBSD Tinderbox From: FreeBSD Tinderbox To: FreeBSD Tinderbox , , Precedence: bulk Message-Id: <20081121033609.3D07B73039@freebsd-current.sentex.ca> Date: Thu, 20 Nov 2008 22:36:09 -0500 (EST) X-Virus-Scanned: ClamAV 0.94/8577/Wed Nov 5 16:05:36 2008 clamav-milter version 0.94 on clamscanner3 X-Virus-Status: Clean X-Scanned-By: MIMEDefang 2.64 on 64.7.153.18 Cc: Subject: [head tinderbox] failure on ia64/ia64 X-BeenThere: freebsd-ia64@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 List-Id: Porting FreeBSD to the IA-64 List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Fri, 21 Nov 2008 03:36:12 -0000 TB --- 2008-11-21 01:26:17 - tinderbox 2.5 running on freebsd-current.sentex.ca TB --- 2008-11-21 01:26:17 - starting HEAD tinderbox run for ia64/ia64 TB --- 2008-11-21 01:26:17 - cleaning the object tree TB --- 2008-11-21 01:26:48 - cvsupping the source tree TB --- 2008-11-21 01:26:48 - /usr/bin/csup -z -r 3 -g -L 1 -h localhost -s /tinderbox/HEAD/ia64/ia64/supfile TB --- 2008-11-21 01:26:55 - building world TB --- 2008-11-21 01:26:55 - MAKEOBJDIRPREFIX=/obj TB --- 2008-11-21 01:26:55 - PATH=/usr/bin:/usr/sbin:/bin:/sbin TB --- 2008-11-21 01:26:55 - TARGET=ia64 TB --- 2008-11-21 01:26:55 - TARGET_ARCH=ia64 TB --- 2008-11-21 01:26:55 - TZ=UTC TB --- 2008-11-21 01:26:55 - __MAKE_CONF=/dev/null TB --- 2008-11-21 01:26:55 - cd /src TB --- 2008-11-21 01:26:55 - /usr/bin/make -B buildworld >>> World build started on Fri Nov 21 01:26:57 UTC 2008 >>> Rebuilding the temporary build tree >>> stage 1.1: legacy release compatibility shims >>> stage 1.2: bootstrap tools >>> stage 2.1: cleaning up the object tree >>> stage 2.2: rebuilding the object tree >>> stage 2.3: build tools >>> stage 3: cross tools >>> stage 4.1: building includes >>> stage 4.2: building libraries >>> stage 4.3: make dependencies >>> stage 4.4: building everything >>> World build completed on Fri Nov 21 03:14:18 UTC 2008 TB --- 2008-11-21 03:14:18 - generating LINT kernel config TB --- 2008-11-21 03:14:18 - cd /src/sys/ia64/conf TB --- 2008-11-21 03:14:18 - /usr/bin/make -B LINT TB --- 2008-11-21 03:14:18 - building LINT kernel TB --- 2008-11-21 03:14:18 - MAKEOBJDIRPREFIX=/obj TB --- 2008-11-21 03:14:18 - PATH=/usr/bin:/usr/sbin:/bin:/sbin TB --- 2008-11-21 03:14:18 - TARGET=ia64 TB --- 2008-11-21 03:14:18 - TARGET_ARCH=ia64 TB --- 2008-11-21 03:14:18 - TZ=UTC TB --- 2008-11-21 03:14:18 - __MAKE_CONF=/dev/null TB --- 2008-11-21 03:14:18 - cd /src TB --- 2008-11-21 03:14:18 - /usr/bin/make -B buildkernel KERNCONF=LINT >>> Kernel build for LINT started on Fri Nov 21 03:14:19 UTC 2008 >>> stage 1: configuring the kernel >>> stage 2.1: cleaning up the object tree >>> stage 2.2: rebuilding the object tree >>> stage 2.3: build tools >>> stage 3.1: making dependencies >>> stage 3.2: building everything [...] :> hack.c cc -shared -nostdlib hack.c -o hack.So rm -f hack.c MAKE=/usr/bin/make sh /src/sys/conf/newvers.sh LINT cc -c -O2 -pipe -fno-strict-aliasing -std=c99 -Wall -Wredundant-decls -Wnested-externs -Wstrict-prototypes -Wmissing-prototypes -Wpointer-arith -Winline -Wcast-qual -Wundef -Wno-pointer-sign -fformat-extensions -nostdinc -I. -I/src/sys -I/src/sys/contrib/altq -I/src/sys/contrib/ia64/libuwx/src -D_KERNEL -DHAVE_KERNEL_OPTION_HEADERS -include opt_global.h -fno-common -finline-limit=15000 --param inline-unit-growth=100 --param large-function-growth=1000 -fno-builtin -mconstant-gp -ffixed-r13 -mfixed-range=f32-f127 -fpic -ffreestanding -Werror vers.c linking kernel hwpmc_mod.o(.text+0xa2f2): In function `load': : undefined reference to `pmc_md_finalize' *** Error code 1 Stop in /obj/ia64/src/sys/LINT. *** Error code 1 Stop in /src. *** Error code 1 Stop in /src.
