The patch in plugins/vidinput_v4l2/vidinput_v4l2.cxx that you had looked a lot like the code in the existing dist, but on looking at it, it is different. Sometimes great minds think alike. You and whoever did the netbsd patch wrote similar code. I just glanced at your patches when I wrote the comment that they looked similar. It looks like you have quite a bit more patches than the code I needed to look at to get this to work. > > > > Else your patches look good. It looks like you have the library part fixed in your Makefile and files/patch-plugins_vidinput_v4l_Makefile.in patches in the handling of LDFLAGS. I cheated and did a setenv LDFLAGS as a workaround but you've done it the right way. I was wondering how about using fuse for exposing the nodes to enduser applications? Cuse (Character device in Userspace) which is an extension to fuse also supports ioctl transport with linux. It will probably soon affect our project since we are about to release a FreeBSD driver for USB DVB-C/T/analogTV/FM Radio device soon. http://support.sundtek.com/index.php/topic,4.0.html I have no idea how the other dvb devices work on FreeBSD, our package comes with it's own stack which emulates the existing linux-dvb v0.3/S2-API/video4linux1/2 stack. PCI devices are still not possible to be used with userspace only drivers, while with USB devices this is no problem, so in case the developer can decide if he wants to write a userspace driver which does not create any real nodes in /dev or to handle most things in kernelspace. Basically the first version of the library only has to replace open/close/read/write/ioctl/mmap/munmap/dup/poll/access(maybe)/stat. Since most linux players have to be modified for FreeBSD anyway this should not be such a problem, maybe the hack that we have a kernelmodule emulating the videointerfaces is not really the best way to go for. I volunteer to port some v4l-dvb Apps and tvtime to FreeBSD. Since VDPAU also seems to work on FreeBSD I'm very much interest to support our DVB-C (especially for HDTV)/DVB-T/analogTV/FM radio USB Stick on FreeBSD, now the driver is working but there are just no applications available which work out of the box. I have a driver for PCI attached mantis cards. It simply exports a buffer with the raw mpeg ts stream to userland where it also handles the frontend programming. The missing link is something to make sense of the mpeg ts stream. IMHO, the v4l2 api is terribly broken by design - as it mandates at least one copy per ts-frame (possibly more than one), but as it is unlikely that we will convince enough people to get behind a sensible API now, I'd also like to have a lib that bridges the gap. But clearly there's a separation. Linux DVB has 2 APIs actually * DVB API v3 * DVB API v5.x (DVB-S2 aka S2-API) both APIs are fairly easy but VDR, Kaffeine and MythTV (not entirely sure about MythTV) nowadays only support the S2-API only, it is very easy to write a DVB API v5.0 to v3 wrapper. Have you had a look at frontend.h of linuxtv? This is more or less the most important API which you should support. The section filtering/demux filtering in kernelspace is something I would consider to be optional. BSD should definitely support it (best is in userspace). HPS has been working to try and get USB DVB devices working through video4bsd/webcamd/cuse4bsd, and I'm the gimp doing the testing(!) For testing with v4l, I minimally ported linux-dvb-utils, and have had 'scan' working at least. I've also applied the same sort of patches to mplayer (configure with --enable-dvbhead), but not yet had a chance to test it - still can't tune the device to a channel yet :) Cheers Tom From owner-freebsd-multimedia@FreeBSD.ORG Fri Feb 12 09:55:17 2010 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-multimedia@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::34]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 58BB61065670 for ; Fri, 12 Feb 2010 09:55:17 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from mrechberger@gmail.com) Received: from fg-out-1718.google.com (fg-out-1718.google.com [72.14.220.159]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id E20608FC1C for ; Fri, 12 Feb 2010 09:55:16 +0000 (UTC) Received: by fg-out-1718.google.com with SMTP id e21so134131fga.13 for ; Fri, 12 Feb 2010 01:55:15 -0800 (PST) DKIM-Signature: v=1; a=rsa-sha256; c=relaxed/relaxed; d=gmail.com; s=gamma; h=domainkey-signature:mime-version:received:in-reply-to:references :date:message-id:subject:from:to:cc:content-type; bh=wAo0WHPbHKa8rJxgu3TuCdKGzKF56UySteHa4Efo/Oc=; b=C1AnnEDo2tliSpjiELEteTjtYAzfEWHs2WXTxgVMBIkg6KWZtllbgcyltQmB3/anmM uMxYtnxc/vAjh6vfm3v9D2LNTiUBEg0Sl0Uf/ovkXEmUETIf6nXeSFSjCrNUk3v7XdsX BclGF3tOvGefcmTDeEMJR7ll18bQxxJlHdHWk= DomainKey-Signature: a=rsa-sha1; c=nofws; d=gmail.com; s=gamma; h=mime-version:in-reply-to:references:date:message-id:subject:from:to :cc:content-type; b=fRSPgPfH24ZUrKXSkw1CUq4lYyDLc3ZgfoluXrRpGc/9B+o39d86GM6iuC04DT69EZ Rk4xSjOyCEXPbyqkEHBIO2Qq5RGIBjcBSh76afuRrH/Lb2r+aeZinzDWZ0152Iyeku1X EtiA3VPDeid2D7HNku6IiccyikjNSF2NeZMQk= MIME-Version: 1.0 Received: by 10.86.6.31 with SMTP id 31mr2393675fgf.5.1265968515226; Fri, 12 Feb 2010 01:55:15 -0800 (PST) In-Reply-To: <2e027be01002120141l7829546du7085da7ecce7aa14@mail.gmail.com> References: <2e027be01002120141l7829546du7085da7ecce7aa14@mail.gmail.com> Date: Fri, 12 Feb 2010 10:55:15 +0100 Message-ID: From: Markus Rechberger To: Tom Evans Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1 Cc: freebsd-multimedia@freebsd.org Subject: Re: DVB/ATSC library?
