Do you mean USB subsystem infrastructure, or something more far-reaching? It seems to me that it's SO close to being functional; in fact, I've taken to not loading any USB drivers at all on my notebook, which seems to be the only "reliable" way of using suspend/resume -- that's not to say that it's perfect, but Pretty Good(TM). Also, If we could round-up the various sysctl settings and document them in one place([1] or [2]), I imagine many users would have suspend/resume as a workable feature, at least on amd64... -Brandon [1] http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/books/handbook/acpi-debug.html [2] http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en/articles/laptop/article.html or From owner-freebsd-usb@FreeBSD.ORG Sun Nov 28 07:30:19 2010 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-usb@hub.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::34]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id A71DB1065694 for ; Sun, 28 Nov 2010 07:30:19 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from gnats@FreeBSD.org) Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (freefall.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::28]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 7A2878FC1D for ; Sun, 28 Nov 2010 07:30:19 +0000 (UTC) Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.14.4/8.14.4) with ESMTP id oAS7UJM0044704 for ; Sun, 28 Nov 2010 07:30:19 GMT (envelope-from gnats@freefall.freebsd.org) Received: (from gnats@localhost) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.14.4/8.14.4/Submit) id oAS7UJbN044698; Sun, 28 Nov 2010 07:30:19 GMT (envelope-from gnats) Date: Sun, 28 Nov 2010 07:30:19 GMT Message-Id: <201011280730.oAS7UJbN044698@freefall.freebsd.org> To: freebsd-usb@FreeBSD.org From: dfilter@FreeBSD.ORG (dfilter service) Cc: Subject: Re: usb/149675: commit references a PR X-BeenThere: freebsd-usb@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list Reply-To: dfilter service List-Id: FreeBSD support for USB List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Sun, 28 Nov 2010 07:30:19 -0000 The following reply was made to PR usb/149675; it has been noted by GNATS. It appears very close on some machines, but far away on others. For example my laptop suspends/resumes with VGA once if the nvidia driver is running, but panics when shutting down after that, and attempting to suspend another time results in a reboot. Other people say that suspending doesn't work at all. I think there's a lot of work other than in the USB stack that needs done before it's going to be reliable for everyone. I believe there's a wiki page being created with a list of issues that need resolved. -- Bruce Cran From owner-freebsd-usb@FreeBSD.ORG Sun Nov 28 10:32:22 2010 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-usb@hub.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::34]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 8853F106564A; Sun, 28 Nov 2010 10:32:22 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from gavin@FreeBSD.org) Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (freefall.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::28]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 5E1438FC08; Sun, 28 Nov 2010 10:32:22 +0000 (UTC) Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.14.4/8.14.4) with ESMTP id oASAWMM5052323; Sun, 28 Nov 2010 10:32:22 GMT (envelope-from gavin@freefall.freebsd.org) Received: (from gavin@localhost) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.14.4/8.14.4/Submit) id oASAWMnj052319; Sun, 28 Nov 2010 10:32:22 GMT (envelope-from gavin) Date: Sun, 28 Nov 2010 10:32:22 GMT Message-Id: <201011281032.oASAWMnj052319@freefall.freebsd.org> To: gavin@FreeBSD.org, freebsd-usb@FreeBSD.org, gavin@FreeBSD.org From: gavin@FreeBSD.org Cc: Subject: Re: usb/151862: [uftdi] adding support of USB GSM modem Falcom Twist X-BeenThere: freebsd-usb@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list List-Id: FreeBSD support for USB List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Sun, 28 Nov 2010 10:32:22 -0000 Synopsis: [uftdi] adding support of USB GSM modem Falcom Twist Responsible-Changed-From-To: freebsd-usb->gavin Responsible-Changed-By: gavin Responsible-Changed-When: Sun Nov 28 10:28:28 UTC 2010 Responsible-Changed-Why: Grab http://www.freebsd.org/cgi/query-pr.cgi?pr=151862 From owner-freebsd-usb@FreeBSD.ORG Mon Nov 29 11:07:12 2010 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-usb@FreeBSD.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::34]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id D25AB1065698 for ; Mon, 29 Nov 2010 11:07:12 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from owner-bugmaster@FreeBSD.org) Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (freefall.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::28]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id BEA7A8FC0A for ; Mon, 29 Nov 2010 11:07:12 +0000 (UTC) Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.14.4/8.14.4) with ESMTP id oATB7CU1053235 for ; Mon, 29 Nov 2010 11:07:12 GMT (envelope-from owner-bugmaster@FreeBSD.org) Received: (from gnats@localhost) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.14.4/8.14.4/Submit) id oATB7Bmc053233 for freebsd-usb@FreeBSD.org; Mon, 29 Nov 2010 11:07:11 GMT (envelope-from owner-bugmaster@FreeBSD.org) Date: Mon, 29 Nov 2010 11:07:11 GMT Message-Id: <201011291107.oATB7Bmc053233@freefall.freebsd.org> X-Authentication-Warning: freefall.freebsd.org: gnats set sender to owner-bugmaster@FreeBSD.org using -f From: FreeBSD bugmaster To: freebsd-usb@FreeBSD.org Cc: Subject: Current problem reports assigned to freebsd-usb@FreeBSD.org X-BeenThere: freebsd-usb@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list List-Id: FreeBSD support for USB List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Mon, 29 Nov 2010 11:07:12 -0000 Note: to view an individual PR, use: http://www.freebsd.org/cgi/query-pr.cgi?pr=(number). Hi, It would require some patching. It is not impossible to do, but I think that it should not be required. If a disk drive does not work properly with FreeBSD then you should be careful using it to store your data. It might be that the vendor of your USB HDD has only tested using one OS. It might be that OS is not FreeBSD. Please try to get support from your USB HDD manufacturer. I'm pretty sure that it is not a problem with FreeBSD USB or FreeBSD CAM layer. I've been using a USB HDD enclosure for the last couple of years now without any problems at all, even though the USB connector is starting to get broken. Another idea: Search Google for "Pyramids of Waste documentary". --HPS From owner-freebsd-usb@FreeBSD.ORG Fri Dec 3 11:01:49 2010 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-usb@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::34]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 505DF1065674 for ; Fri, 3 Dec 2010 11:01:49 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from gofdu-freebsd-usb@m.gmane.org) Received: from lo.gmane.org (lo.gmane.org [80.91.229.12]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id CC0BF8FC0A for ; Fri, 3 Dec 2010 11:01:48 +0000 (UTC) Received: from list by lo.gmane.org with local (Exim 4.69) (envelope-from ) id 1POTOd-0001N3-RP for freebsd-usb@freebsd.org; Fri, 03 Dec 2010 12:01:47 +0100 Received: from static-78-8-147-77.ssp.dialog.net.pl ([78.8.147.77]) by main.gmane.org with esmtp (Gmexim 0.1 (Debian)) id 1AlnuQ-0007hv-00 for ; Fri, 03 Dec 2010 12:01:47 +0100 Received: from mwisnicki+freebsd by static-78-8-147-77.ssp.dialog.net.pl with local (Gmexim 0.1 (Debian)) id 1AlnuQ-0007hv-00 for ; Fri, 03 Dec 2010 12:01:47 +0100 X-Injected-Via-Gmane: http://gmane.org/ To: freebsd-usb@freebsd.org From: Marcin Wisnicki Date: Fri, 3 Dec 2010 11:01:30 +0000 (UTC) Lines: 45 Message-ID: References: <20101125025526.GA2772@mail> <201011260817.47338.hselasky@c2i.net> <201012031006.58465.hselasky@c2i.net> Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=UTF-8 Content-Transfer-Encoding: 8bit X-Complaints-To: usenet@dough.gmane.org X-Gmane-NNTP-Posting-Host: static-78-8-147-77.ssp.dialog.net.pl User-Agent: Pan/0.133 (House of Butterflies) Subject: Re: External usb HDD disconnects, system gets messed up X-BeenThere: freebsd-usb@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list List-Id: FreeBSD support for USB List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Fri, 03 Dec 2010 11:01:49 -0000 On Fri, 03 Dec 2010 10:06:58 +0100, Hans Petter Selasky wrote: > On Friday 03 December 2010 02:37:43 Marcin Wisnicki wrote: >> On Fri, 26 Nov 2010 08:17:47 +0100, Hans Petter Selasky wrote: >> > I think that the USB part of your USB disk has died or there has been >> > a firmware crash. But Windows handles it gracefully, would be nice if FreeBSD did too. > > I've been using a USB HDD enclosure for the last couple of years now > without any problems at all, even though the USB connector is starting > to get broken. > Unfortunately it is impossible to know it before buying. Typical consumer does not use external hdd for more than couple of hours at a time so there are no reviews or complaints about it. You won't get your money returned either if it's just "sometimes a ding-dong sound is played if drive is used for more than 20 hours" which is all that happens in Windows. FreeBSD 9-CURRENT will regularly display the following error which causes all IO to stop: (da0:umass-sim0:0:0:0): AutoSense failed g_vfs_done():da0s1[READ(offset=6782976, length=36864)]error = 5 vnode_pager_getpages: I/O read error vm_fault: pager read error, pid 2986 (cp) I tried setting hw.usb.umass.debug=1 but there was no extra debug output; setting hw.usb.ehci.debug=1 or hw.usb.debug=1 results in lots of output that I'm not sure is useful. What would I need to do to help debug what's going wrong? -- Bruce Cran
