The boot process fails with a number of USB errors then the final message: Mounting from cd9660:/dev/iso9660/FREEBSD_I386 failed with error 19 The key elements from the USB errors: usb_alloc_device: set address 2 failed usb_error_timeout ugen0.2: unknown @ usbus0 uhub_reattach_port could not allocate new device The motherboard is ASUS P5N-E SLI The processor is Intel core 2 quad 2.4 GHZ I'm not sure if it's relevant, but when the boot process fails, I see uhub0 and uhub1. When I boot in safe mode, it starts up fine but only uhub1 is shown in dmesg. It's very difficult to capture debug information given the FreeBSD machine doesn't boot except in safe mode. >How-To-Repeat: Installation on similar motherboard. >Fix: >Release-Note: >Audit-Trail: >Unformatted: From owner-freebsd-i386@FreeBSD.ORG Fri Feb 24 17:15:42 2012 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-i386@hub.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::34]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 6A81D106566C; Fri, 24 Feb 2012 17:15:42 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from linimon@FreeBSD.org) Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (freefall.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::28]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 3DD798FC12; Fri, 24 Feb 2012 17:15:42 +0000 (UTC) Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.14.5/8.14.5) with ESMTP id q1OHFgxE024994; Fri, 24 Feb 2012 17:15:42 GMT (envelope-from linimon@freefall.freebsd.org) Received: (from linimon@localhost) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.14.5/8.14.5/Submit) id q1OHFgGt024990; Fri, 24 Feb 2012 17:15:42 GMT (envelope-from linimon) Date: Fri, 24 Feb 2012 17:15:42 GMT Message-Id: <201202241715.q1OHFgGt024990@freefall.freebsd.org> To: linimon@FreeBSD.org, freebsd-bugs@FreeBSD.org, freebsd-i386@FreeBSD.org From: linimon@FreeBSD.org Cc: Subject: Re: i386/165452: [boot] FreeBSD's system installer stops when setting up network X-BeenThere: freebsd-i386@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list List-Id: I386-specific issues for FreeBSD List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Fri, 24 Feb 2012 17:15:42 -0000 Old Synopsis: FreeBSD's system installer stops when setting up network New Synopsis: [boot] FreeBSD's system installer stops when setting up network Responsible-Changed-From-To: freebsd-bugs->freebsd-i386 Responsible-Changed-By: linimon Responsible-Changed-When: Fri Feb 24 17:14:31 UTC 2012 Responsible-Changed-Why: possibly machine-specific. http://www.freebsd.org/cgi/query-pr.cgi?pr=165452 From owner-freebsd-i386@FreeBSD.ORG Sat Feb 25 02:20:11 2012 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-i386@hub.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::34]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 73CEB106566B for ; Sat, 25 Feb 2012 02:20:11 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from gnats@FreeBSD.org) Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (freefall.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::28]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 4A78E8FC16 for ; Sat, 25 Feb 2012 02:20:11 +0000 (UTC) Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.14.5/8.14.5) with ESMTP id q1P2KB5E028272 for ; Sat, 25 Feb 2012 02:20:11 GMT (envelope-from gnats@freefall.freebsd.org) Received: (from gnats@localhost) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.14.5/8.14.5/Submit) id q1P2KBlC028271; Sat, 25 Feb 2012 02:20:11 GMT (envelope-from gnats) Date: Sat, 25 Feb 2012 02:20:11 GMT Message-Id: <201202250220.q1P2KBlC028271@freefall.freebsd.org> To: freebsd-i386@FreeBSD.org From: Colin Wass Cc: Subject: Re: i386/165434: Install fail Error 19 X-BeenThere: freebsd-i386@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list Reply-To: Colin Wass List-Id: I386-specific issues for FreeBSD List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Sat, 25 Feb 2012 02:20:11 -0000 The following reply was made to PR i386/165434; it has been noted by GNATS. Therefore, booting with hint.apic.0.disabled=1 allows the system to boot successfully. I'll test a custom kernel with options SMP_TIMER_NC and let you know.
