I want python2 to be the default version (lang/python port installs = python -> python2.7, etc). Then I want to build another port with python3 dependency. I put USE_PYTHON=3D3.3+ in port's Makefile, but it depends on = lang/python which pulls python2.7 too. How can I build a python module with 3.X only dependency? Thanks. Right now this can only be arranged with a hack in Mk/bsd.python.mk, line 581 and following. Those pull in lang/python, since many ports depend on bin/python, although they are only compatible with a specific python version. Solving this issue and making ports depend on lang/python2 OR lang/python3 OR a specific python version is on the agenda, but will take some time, since many ports, that python scripts, have to be checked. However there is bug in pkgng that does not allow to install a python 2 and python 3 module because it relies on the origin which is devel/py-foo and not the port name py27-foo | py33-foo. I've posted an issue on the FreeBSD pkgng github repository [1]. Also, know I would like to get in touch to the ruby team so they do the exact wrapper of the ruby interpreters :-). Progress on what exactly? The thread discusses two things: 1) Installation of different python versions in parallel 2) Installation of a python module for different python versions through the ports 1) works without any problems, as described in the previous mails 2) should work with nasty side effects for package build systems since the last commit to bsd.python.mk, which introduced PYTHON2_DEFAULT_VERSION Right now, 2) is nowhere close to be usable on a daily basis, but we're working on that problem. It seems like some of the recent updates to operate without a libconv in /usr/local/lib have confused python on systems that still have it. On FreeBSD 9.1, a GNU configure file generated using the python macros in autoconf-archive-0.2011.01.02 fails to link when python27 is installed with NLS chosen as an option. Configure detects that programs linked against python should be linked with -lintl, but not that they need -L/usr/local/lib as well. I've attached a little configure example that exercises this. The example needs automake, autoconf, and autoconf-archive. I've attached a list of all the packages in my system in case I missed one. To reproduce, untar, cd into the tc directory and then: $ ./autogen.sh $ ./configure With python27 and NLS the relevant error output looks like: checking for Python site-packages path... /usr/local/lib/python2.7/site-packages checking python extra libraries... -lintl -lutil checking python extra linking flags... -Wl,--export-dynamic checking consistency of all components of python development environment... no configure: error: in `/tmp/tc': configure: error: Could not link test program to Python. Maybe the main Python library has been installed in some non-standard library path. If so, pass it to configur= e, via the LDFLAGS environment variable. Example: ./configure LDFLAGS=3D"-L/usr/non-standard-path/python/lib" =3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D= =3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D= =3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D= =3D ERROR! Often, this is due to a better alternative having become available and/or the cessation of development on the existing port. In some cases, ports are marked for removal because they fail to build and install correctly from their sources, or otherwise fail in operation. The ports, and the reason and date that they have been scheduled for removal, are listed below. If no one has stepped forward before that time to propose a way to fix the problems (such as via a PR), the ports will be deleted. portname: lang/python26 description: Interpreted object-oriented programming language maintainer: python@FreeBSD.org deprecated because: This port will reach it's EoL upstream soon, please migrate to lang/python27 expiration date: 2013-10-01 build errors: none. overview: http://portsmon.FreeBSD.org/portoverview.py?category=lang&portname=python26 portname: lang/python31 description: Interpreted object-oriented programming language maintainer: python@FreeBSD.org deprecated because: This port will reach it's EoL upstream soon, please migrate to lang/python33 expiration date: 2014-06-01 build errors: none. overview: http://portsmon.FreeBSD.org/portoverview.py?category=lang&portname=python31 If this problem is one that you are already aware of, please accept our apologies and ignore this message. On the other hand, if you no longer wish to maintain this port (or ports), please reply with a message stating that, and accept our thanks for your efforts in the past. PYDISTUTILS_AUTOPLIST This knob will enable the creation of an automatic package list similar to the linux rpm ports and rubygems. It will work for the majority packages that do not install files outside of the site-packages and include directories for python. Ports installing e.g. binaries might need some additional care, since there is a small regression for directories within BSD.local.dist. The knob supports the traditional distutils as well as easy_install on all currently supported python versions. You can mix contents of an existing pkg-plist (e.g. if the port installs additional documentation) with the automatic results. PYTHON_PY3K_PLIST_HACK Several ports currently install python scripts without using the typical python way of doing things (e.g. devel/glib20), but which are byte-compiled. To enable proper support for python 3.2+ within the package lists, this knob will replace the contents of the existing pkg-plist (e.g. share/port/foo.pyc, share/port/foo.pyo) with the proper values. It's based on the plist include hack existing in devel/py-virtualenv, which is currently used by various ports. Both knobs will improve the situation for python packages to be built for Python 3.x as default version. This will not solve all problems at an instant, but reduces the wrong plist entries being created, if you use python3.x as DEFAULT_PYTHON_VERSION. The patch itself can be retrieved from http://people.freebsd.org/~mva/python_mod_plist.diff Cheers Marcus --IS0zKkzwUGydFO0o Content-Type: application/pgp-signature -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v2.0.21 (FreeBSD) iEYEARECAAYFAlI9Zm4ACgkQi68/ErJnpkfQNACeI2mqM0k2xkcO1iqqKThFauBb 2W8AoLWndcSq6X3zZnCBfAIu8qvmCKIU =484c -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- --IS0zKkzwUGydFO0o-- From owner-freebsd-python@FreeBSD.ORG Sat Sep 21 23:01:39 2013 Return-Path: Delivered-To: python@FreeBSD.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:1900:2254:206a::19:1]) (using TLSv1 with cipher ADH-AES256-SHA (256/256 bits)) (No client certificate requested) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id E704F6AF; Sat, 21 Sep 2013 23:01:39 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from mva@FreeBSD.org) Received: from smtprelay04.ispgateway.de (smtprelay04.ispgateway.de [80.67.31.27]) (using TLSv1 with cipher DHE-RSA-AES256-SHA (256/256 bits)) (No client certificate requested) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTPS id A64412D9D; Sat, 21 Sep 2013 23:01:39 +0000 (UTC) Received: from [89.183.13.150] (helo=localhost) by smtprelay04.ispgateway.de with esmtpsa (TLSv1:AES256-SHA:256) (Exim 4.68) (envelope-from ) id 1VNW5G-0002cw-2x; Sun, 22 Sep 2013 00:55:26 +0200 Date: Sun, 22 Sep 2013 00:55:25 +0200 From: Marcus von Appen To: zope@FreeBSD.org Subject: zope related code to be removed from bsd.python.mk Message-ID: <20130921225525.GA1363@medusa.sysfault.org> Mail-Followup-To: zope@FreeBSD.org, python@FreeBSD.org MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: multipart/signed; micalg=pgp-sha1; protocol="application/pgp-signature"; boundary="cWoXeonUoKmBZSoM" Content-Disposition: inline User-Agent: Mutt/1.5.21 (2010-09-15) X-Df-Sender: MTEyNTc0Mg== Cc: python@FreeBSD.org X-BeenThere: freebsd-python@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.14 Precedence: list Reply-To: Marcus von Appen List-Id: FreeBSD-specific Python issues List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Sat, 21 Sep 2013 23:01:40 -0000 --cWoXeonUoKmBZSoM Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Disposition: inline Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable Dear Zope maintainers, I'd like to get rid of the zope related code in bsd.python.mk and think about moving it into an own Uses file for zope. Thus all ports requiring Zope would be converted to USES+=3D zope. You can find the mk file itself at http://people.freebsd.org/~mva/zope.mk.txt. It is a simple copy'n'paste =66rom bsd.python.mk with a small additional check for PYTHON_VERSION. I'll have finished patching the relevant ports later for a review and test. If there are any concerns, please let me know.
