Actually, as far as I understood David Turner freetype.org> said that Microsoft has several patents covering the ClearType "technology", so it is very unlikely that the patches will be included into freetype2, libXft, cairo, etc. For example, Ubuntu developers maintain the pathes on their own for quite a while.
