I've brought up this `problem' in the past (I'm using a HP 782A/GDM 1902 Sony) 19" monitor, and a dying Nec 14" as a boot monitor. Since I can't seem to find a Hercules adapter and monitor, I was wondering about the Linux way. Last time this topic was up people ran away screaming: "No X in the kernel, no X in the kernel !"... For the intended purpose, I don't think full chipset support is required :-) Generic VGA should suffice, AFAI.
