As long as the kernels are installed where the loader can find them (which I guess means on the root partition), you can tell the loader to load & boot whatever kernel you want. No need to rebuild or reinstall anything. Just hit a key to break out of the autoboot countdown, then: boot kernel.PCM or whatever you called the alternative kernel.
