Very embarrassing, sorry. :( I was just reading some mail from Lars Eggert before I sent this post, and got things scrambled in my brain. In my defense, I offer a mumbled reference to the bachelor party I attended last night/this morning... In any case, FYI, I just finished thoroughly regression testing your fix, and it does indeed DTRT, so I've submitted the request to re@.
