In my case, Xft seems to lack in some header files I can not install or I do not know where to find. freetype in its newest version IS definitely broken when using the ports collection, it is the install routine which makes things impossible. It uses 'make' instead of 'gmake' as mentioned. After the installation by hand I can also not install XFree86, because it lacks in a header file named ft2xxxx.h or similar. The XFree86 port depends on freetype - so IT IS a XFree86 problem due to the fact of dependencies. On one machine I did the task - but it worked because an older freetype2 port has been installed already and I did not delete the X11R6 directory. Installations of XFree86 on a freshly installed system also fails. I do not know what must happen in addition to say: this port is broken! All the discussions about the new meta-port philosophy is obsolete due to the fact that it is not working as exspected. Well, we are not talking about development or using XFree86 'at home' or for toys. I'm sorry using those harsh words, but at the moment 'tempus fugit', time runs away and we have a lot of work to do. Installing XFree86 by hand is no alternative because next time I run into trouble with other ports which need to know how XFree86 has been installed by the ports system ... Thanks al ot in advance.
