[..] I have seen something similar on FreeBSD installed via the serial port. Check /boot/loader.conf for a line like console="vidconsole" # Set the current console if you have it set to something like "serial" (sorry, I don't remember the exact name), this will mean that the console will be the serial port. You can comment the line out and it should work.
