I think it's an improvement, which is why I did it. It better matches the layout in the tree, and I think makes more sense. I don't intend people to be switching between XFree86 and X.Org regularly. In fact, I expect that it will be a one-way thing. My point about this issue you brought up is that I don't think it's an issue. If you want a full set of fonts, then install all the font ports (probably even more than are distributed with X). If you just need a scalable font to get the port to run, well, that's what the dependency will provide.
