The "type 8250" certainly doesn't seem right.  I sounds like something 
that I thought was fixed some time ago.  I also don't know where 
flags 0x40000 comes from.

Also note that if I don't use ISA interrupt routing, the modem is 
assigned IRQ 11, which it doesn't seem to support if I'm reading

When I start (userland) ppp and enter terminal mode, then issue 
a command (e.g. "ATH"), nothing is echoed to the display, but 
echoed to the system console is :

  usb0: host controller process error
  usb0: host controller halted

and then the system locks up and I have to power down to recover.  
Why the modem confuses usb0 is a complete mystery to me.  I don't 
see anything in dmesg that ties them together, but maybe I've missed 
something. 

I've updated the system at least four times in the past two weeks and 
as of this evening I now can't get make installworld to work.  It aborts 
with an insufficient permissions error (I don't remember exactly).  I'm 
beginning to suspect that something in my source isn't being updated.  
I may try wiping /usr/src completely and doing a cvsup to try to force 
everything to be fresh.  It will be some time tomorrow before I know 
whether that helps.
