I just tried to install vmware3 to a newly formatted 6.1-RELEASE box, and I got the exact same message ("Unable to fix standard file descriptors.") But, when I tried to install it on a 6.1-STABLE box recently upgraded from FreeBSD 4.3 (with all disk partitions still in UFS1 instead of UFS2) the message didn't appear. So, I'm inclined to think that the problem might be linked to the version of UFS. More tests are needed, of course.
