There was a PR, a while ago: http://www.freebsd.org/cgi/query-pr.cgi?pr=3D43345 But now that I've installed -CURRENT, there no problem... with the ATA controller at least :) But I know that even 5.0-p4 does not allow me to boot (I have a shuttle barebone with a SiS 651 chipset). Like you, I would like a solution to fix this in a RELENG branch of FreeBSD but I am sorry to say I can't contribute myself (no time and probably not enough competence...). Anyway, have a look at the PR, maybe it's a good start if you can't afford -CURRENT.
