Another posssibility is that the cvsup-server is (temporarily) broken. 
I saw pretty much the same error message a week or two ago from another
cvsup-server (cvsup2.se.freebsd.org).  A day later it started working
correctly again without me changing anything.

It is not supposed to say that.  That you get that message about
"Unknown release" indicates that *something* is wrong.
