if the back channels are supported then the mixer would show up with extra
things to mix? 

an interesting pre-question would be 'is the mixer hardcoded to
have the selection of items that it currently supports?'

probably is hardcoded. but one wold have to go src-spelunking to know for 
sure.

so, an interesting extention to the mixer would be to query for 
capabilities and present the correct items.

it might actually do this already, i dunno.

so, back to your question, i'd poke into /usr/src/sys/dev/sound/pci and 
see whats in there
