Here are my steps (it's example, don't copy this blindly): gsettings set org.mate.session.required-components windowmanager xmonad gsettings set org.mate.caja.preferences desktop-is-home-dir true gsettings set org.mate.caja.desktop home-icon-visible false gsettings set org.mate.caja.desktop computer-icon-visible false Next thing is keyring. You have to run a gnome-keyring-daemon in case you are a evolution-mail user. Do not remove gnome related packages if you don't know what are their purpose.
