I do have COM ports, I just didn't have a serial console setup :) I managed= to correct this, and here's the bootlog, which shows that somehow atapci0 does get detected, but ata[01] doesn't :( In other words, I'll have to test whether this commit really was the culpri= t, but in the meantime I locked myself out of my laptop (by not having a real console -- for some reason input isn't getting to the laptop by serial cons= ole so I can't control the boot anymore, booting an old kernel is out of the question). Anyway once I get back in and find the time to revert the PCI po= wer change, I'll have more info for you. Most likely it's a goof up on my part though.
