Sorry for delaying this response, but I was really busy over the weekend.

I tried setting the artsd timeout to 10 seconds. After several minutes, 
timidity2.i, which uses the dsp port directly, said it couldn't open
the dsp device. A check with lsof showed that artsd had the port
open. Killing artsd made the port available again.

So, looks like the timeout doesn't work on my system.

Has anyone actually seen artsd time out and relinquish
the dsp device on FreeBSD?
