I have a 3 disk CCD with multiple partitions set up because it appears to improve transfer rates by about 50% (IIRC) over having each partition on a separate drive. I know you advocate using one very large partition, but I prefer to keep my partitions small enough so that I can dump any of them to a 90 meter DAT tape (roughly 2 GB) without having to deal with tape swap. I have a DAT autoloader, so if there's an automated way of dealing with EOT with dump, I would reconsider this decision, but this is the easiest way for me to deal with backup at this time.
