I am running flexfax and it was leaving a short connect timeout in the modem, and that is what was causing the hangup. Resetting the modem before dialing with ppp at least allows me to get a physical connection. I have to diddle with my ppp login scripts to go on to the next layer. Thanks for the reply. - Gene
