For most applications in our business, it doesn't really pay off to stay on the bleeding edge. The only updates I generally do are security related. Heck, the only reason I moved between 2.2, 3.x, and 4.x, was that I was installing on new hardware. I still have a 3-STABLE box in production (486/66 that's being replaced with a K6-2/350 running 4-STABLE next week). I do already have a 5.0 test machine going (using it to work out a new mail system). So far it's doing just fine, though it's not in production yet, I'll wait until 5-STABLE (if I can complete my project by then, if not, then I'll go with 6-STABLE). -- Troy Settle Pulaski Networks http://www.psknet.com 540.994.4254 ~ 866.477.5638 Pulaski Chamber 2002 Small Business Of The Year > -----Original Message----- > From: owner-freebsd-isp@FreeBSD.ORG=20 > [mailto:owner-freebsd-isp@FreeBSD.ORG] On Behalf Of S=F8ren Klintrup > Sent: Friday, February 21, 2003 12:27 AM > To: freebsd-isp@FreeBSD.ORG > Subject: Re: 5.0 Release...upgrade me servers now?? >=20 >=20 > tony wrote: > > Is anyone running 5.0 on their servers yet? > > Should I upgrade from 4.x to 5.0 now or wait? >=20 > Short Answer: no >=20 > Longer Answer : > imo the FreeBSD 5.x branch isn't ready for production servers=20 > as of yet, there is still a lot of bugs that needs to be=20 > sorted out and fixed. >=20 > You may want to read this URL, that has some explanation to=20 > what I mean : http://www.freebsd.org/releases/5.0R/early-adopter.html >=20 > That said, theres some exciting features in FreeBSD 5.0 that=20 > I'm really looking forward to, and I might set up one of the=20 > servers that customers doesn't have direct access to and=20 > isn't mission critical with FreeBSD 5.0 to help out in=20 > testing, but until the 5-STABLE branch is release I'm not=20 > going to adopt my server park into RELENG_5. >=20 > Regards, > S=F8ren Klintrup > Systems Administrator, EuroTrust Secure Hosting >=20 >=20 >=20 > To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org > with "unsubscribe freebsd-isp" in the body of the message >=20 >=20 To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-isp" in the body of the message
