How many people really set PREFIX to point to somewhere else? I would be willing to bet money that MOST people do not. Therefore, turning extra handsprings to optimize the *non-standard* case does not make sense to me. That may not make YOU feel really happy, I'll readily grant that, but it doesn't make you any less the exception and I don't think that I need to argue the need to make the system as neat as possible where the majority position of users are concerned.
