Would it be best to take the PCI } ids that are sprinkled throughout the drivers and place them in a } common place? I don't consider it a good idea to have all PCI IDs defined in one place. There are cases where the driver doesn't only need the PCI chip ID, but also the chip revision, and if you have to make all these available to the driver anyway, then I'd rather define all the symbolic PCI IDs in the driver. The current policy is to have VENDOR IDs in the generic PCI driver to aid in identifying unsupported PCI devices. The CHIP and VENDOR IDs are required in each driver to identify a particular chip. Making a driver recognise a new PCI chip requires having its CHIP ID defined, and then have the probe and attach code know how to deal with that particular chip. The CHIP IDs are only of local interest, and I rather would have short IDs ... One special case is the chip IDs for the PCI bus support chips (Neptun, Triton, ...) which are defined in "pcisupport.c" and which are only used to print the chip set configuration independently of the BIOS. Just to make sure that there isn't some SVGA card BIOS that switches off some PCI performance options in the chip set :). Of course it is possible to have all the PCI IDs in one header file, but we went to some effort to have adding a device require NO additions to generic PCI files. Just my opinion ... When we start talking multi-environment systems, /usr/include is simply the default value for "The Current Environment on This Machine" The include files for a generic compilation will come from some other directory. One of the common abstractions is to separate the "machine" characteristics from the "Operating System" characteristics. Therefore IS appropriate. Just because L!*ux does it wrong is no reason for us to do likewise. Besides, you can create a "compatability" directory which defines the as simply "include " ---- Richard Wackerbarth rkw@dataplex.net From owner-cvs-sys Fri Jul 28 21:06:08 1995 Return-Path: cvs-sys-owner Received: (from majordom@localhost) by freefall.cdrom.com (8.6.11/8.6.6) id VAA23229 for cvs-sys-outgoing; Fri, 28 Jul 1995 21:06:08 -0700 Received: (from bde@localhost) by freefall.cdrom.com (8.6.11/8.6.6) id VAA23210 ; Fri, 28 Jul 1995 21:05:59 -0700 Date: Fri, 28 Jul 1995 21:05:59 -0700 From: Bruce Evans Message-Id: <199507290405.VAA23210@freefall.cdrom.com> To: CVS-commiters, cvs-sys Subject: cvs commit: src/sys/i386/isa cy.c rc.c sio.c Sender: cvs-sys-owner@freebsd.org Precedence: bulk bde 95/07/28 21:05:58 Modified: sys/i386/isa cy.c rc.c sio.c Log: Always wake up writers after clearing TS_BUSY. Don't do that just yet, Linux may very well be changing in this area. This is one part of the FSSTND that the group has not got to discussing much, but with alternate architectures hitting linux there direct polution of usr/include/sys with i386 specific files will bight them. It may be useful to have a null modem routine, but nullmodem() wasn't one. nullmodem() was identical to ttymodem() except it didn't implement MDMBUF (carrier) flow control, didn't do any wakeups for off to on carrier transitions, and didn't flush the i/o queues for on to off carrier transitions (flushing has the side effect of waking up readers and writers) although it did generate SIGHUPs. The wakeups must normally be done even if nullmodem() is null in case something is sleeping waiting for a carrier transition. In any case, the wakeups should be harmless. They may cause bogus results for select(), but select() is already bogus for nonstandard line disciplines.
