The paragraph in question deals with the pseudo device ether. The manual says: "ether is only needed if you have an Ethernet card". The problem is that a kernel without a driver for an Ethernet card but with ether will not compile. The paragraph for ether should be rephrased to include this piece of information. My suggestion: pseudo-device ether ether includes generic Ethernet protocol code. It must be included if your kernel contains support for an Ethernet card. You must comment out ether if you have removed all Ethernet card drivers. Now, I think the contents of the documentation is good enough to be released, however, in many parts, page format isn't not that nice yet. The original documentation is in LaTeX, and I made English version in LaTeX, too. I have thought about putting it into sgml files, but I figured that it probably is nice to make LaTeX version first and non-Japanese speaking IIJ-PPP users of platforms other than FreeBSD can also benefit from the documentation. Anyway, now, I need some help to make this version look nicer. (Actually, I've tried to look into the macro and style files, but I couldn't solve the problem. Besides, to tell you the truth, I'm visually impaired and have no mean to see what the documentation looks like after LaTeX processes the .tex files, so I really don't know which parts of the document don't look good in what way in the first place :-) I appreciate if there is anyone willing to do the work. Please let me know if you are interested. The new copy of POSIX.1 (P1003.1b-1993) adds O_DSYNC, O_RSYNC and O_SYNC in the open call. O_DSYNC versus O_SYNC permits data-only integrity versus full file info integrity (access stamps, etc). I haven't spent the time to puzzle out exactly what O_RSYNC means - that once you read it it better also be on the disk? There is a feature test macro "_POSIX_SYNCHRONIZED_IO" that has to be defined for these to be present. Anyone working off a new spec better keep an eye out for the change bars- I didn't realize this was new until this mail. -- Temporarily via "hdalog@zipnet.net"...
