Yes, I did rather skip over the this. That's what I meant too. I ported apsfilter a few weeks ago, and there's no evidence of it in /var/db/pkg (or with pkg_info -a) nor has there ever been any evidence of kermit there. I just can't seem to figure it out. /etc/disktab does'nt have my existing boot drive there yet freeBSD knows how to use it -- so I'm disinclined to believe those that say I must concoct an /etc/disktab entry for my new disk. Both disks, the existing boot drive and the new one, are Connor 1 gig SCSI drives hanging off of an Adaptec 2940 SCSI controller. Please shed some light on this for me! The freeBSD Docs CD does'nt seem to have this covered, nor is it in the FAQ, nor in the Handbook - nowhere that I've found! The first is a terse listing of supported hardware, the second is a collection of essays, notes, observations and tips about various bits of hardware. I'm not entirely satisfied with the current arrangement and have been pondering ways to merge the two. My general idea is to have each section laid out something like: 1.1 CDROM 1.1.1 Supported In 2.0 SCSI ... Added in 2.1 SoundBlaster ... Added in -current IDE ... 1.1.2 Notes/quirks (Commentary, hints and tips. Some entries in 1.1.1 may link directly to sections in here.) 1.2 Sound Cards 1.2.1 Supported ... In a way, the current slit is nice because the supported hardware list is quite compact, but I think the above would be nearly as effective. It also deals with "what version supports what?" question and makes this section of the handbook itself version neutral. What doesn't fit in are the excellent but long essays such as SCSI which covers a broad range of topics including controllers, disks, tapes, cdroms and the like. Maybe we can push them into the "Advanced Topics" section and place cross references in the general hardware section. The other section that gets tangled up with hardware is the kernel config. In particular, what the driver names are and typical kernel config entries for them. In the hardware section or the kernel config section? -john == jfieber@indiana.edu =========================================== == http://fallout.campusview.indiana.edu/~jfieber ================ From owner-freebsd-doc Tue Jun 25 06:54:20 1996 Return-Path: owner-doc Received: (from root@localhost) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.7.5/8.7.3) id GAA27669 for doc-outgoing; Tue, 25 Jun 1996 06:54:20 -0700 (PDT) Received: from Fieber-John.campusview.indiana.edu (Fieber-John.campusview.indiana.edu [149.159.1.34]) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.7.5/8.7.3) with ESMTP id GAA27662 for ; Tue, 25 Jun 1996 06:54:17 -0700 (PDT) Received: from localhost (jfieber@localhost) by Fieber-John.campusview.indiana.edu (8.7.5/8.7.3) with SMTP id IAA11404; Tue, 25 Jun 1996 08:54:14 -0500 (EST) X-Authentication-Warning: Fieber-John.campusview.indiana.edu: jfieber owned process doing -bs Date: Tue, 25 Jun 1996 08:54:14 -0500 (EST) From: John Fieber X-Sender: jfieber@Fieber-John.campusview.indiana.edu Reply-To: John Fieber To: "Jay M. If a parallel printer cannot be convinced to do the appropriate thing on getting a "bare" LF, the following script works quite well as an input filter: #!/bin/sh exec sed 's/$/^M/' The catch is that the ^M needs to be a literal CR, which requires a little explanation to enter with vi. If someone would be so kind as to e-mail or point me to the SGML for this section, I'll be happy to write up creating this script as /usr/local/libexec/if-addcr, including at least a brief description of using ^V to enter the ^M using vi, and submit diffs. Ah, while I have your attention, WRT "Administrating printers," while "adminitrating" and "administering" are synonymous, "administering" is more common and preferred, at least in US English, for whatever that may be worth. -- John Lind, Starfire Consulting Services E-mail: john@starfire.MN.ORG USnail: PO Box 17247, Mpls MN 55417 From owner-freebsd-doc Thu Jun 27 19:33:47 1996 Return-Path: owner-doc Received: (from root@localhost) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.7.5/8.7.3) id TAA25975 for doc-outgoing; Thu, 27 Jun 1996 19:33:47 -0700 (PDT) Received: from Fieber-John.campusview.indiana.edu (Fieber-John.campusview.indiana.edu [149.159.1.34]) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.7.5/8.7.3) with ESMTP id TAA25962 for ; Thu, 27 Jun 1996 19:33:42 -0700 (PDT) Received: from localhost (jfieber@localhost) by Fieber-John.campusview.indiana.edu (8.7.5/8.7.3) with SMTP id VAA19456; Thu, 27 Jun 1996 21:33:28 -0500 (EST) X-Authentication-Warning: Fieber-John.campusview.indiana.edu: jfieber owned process doing -bs Date: Thu, 27 Jun 1996 21:33:27 -0500 (EST) From: John Fieber X-Sender: jfieber@Fieber-John.campusview.indiana.edu Reply-To: John Fieber To: Kees Jan Koster cc: doc@freebsd.org Subject: Re: SGML docs. In the current version, there is no general image handling currently, although you can include encapsulated postscript that comes out okay in LaTeX. Cross references are fairly simple.
