It seems to me that the situation is a little bit unclear. There are two different packages of teTeX for FreeBSD. I did both of them. In the first place I did the *BSD* ports of Thomas Esser's teTeX distribution as _binary-only_ packages for NetBSD/i386, FreeBSD and BSD/OS. Thomas Esser included them in _his_ package distribution. This binary package distribution accompanies teTeX's sources and texmf tree library distribution. This set of teTeX's *BSD* ports I did adhere to Thomas Esser's teTeX package installation procedure (which, by the way, is well documented -- teTeX comes with tons of documentation). That was around Summer/Fall 1995. Thomas Esser and I then recognized from the complaints we received that it would be more helpful for the respective NetBSD or FreeBSD or BSD/OS community if we would additionally generate _full_ packages (including the texmf tree) for the _respective *BSD* ports and packages collections_. For example, we proposed this for the FreeBSD part on this mailing list around December 1995. Thomas Gellekum then overtook the task of taking care that our port of teTeX to FreeBSD would be committed to FreeBSD's CVS tree in a way satisfying your porting standards. Since we had some trouble with pkg_create disliking a 100K PLIST the porting project took us two months, and Thomas Gellekum finally committed the teTeX port on 1996/2/22. Meanwhile some other people of your group (notably, Ollivier Robert and, seemingly, Andreas Klemm) tried porting teTeX themselves. I am sorry for the time these people unnecessarily wasted on their porting efforts. But we couldn't do more than announcing our porting project to this list as well as Thomas Gellekum announced to this list that he would look after our work. I hope these comments clarify the situation. (Maybe, you would also like to have a look at the Makefile of the teTeX port.) If there is anything I could do for you regarding the port of teTeX to FreeBSD I would be happy to do so. -Bernd -- Bernd Rosauer br@netland.sub.de From owner-freebsd-ports Mon Mar 4 02:59:18 1996 Return-Path: owner-ports Received: (from root@localhost) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.7.3/8.7.3) id CAA20563 for ports-outgoing; Mon, 4 Mar 1996 02:59:18 -0800 (PST) Received: from ghpc6.ihf.rwth-aachen.de ([134.130.90.6]) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.7.3/8.7.3) with SMTP id CAA20557 for ; Mon, 4 Mar 1996 02:59:03 -0800 (PST) Received: (from thomas@localhost) by ghpc6.ihf.rwth-aachen.de (8.6.12/8.6.9) id LAA15994; Mon, 4 Mar 1996 11:57:10 +0100 Message-Id: <199603041057.LAA15994@ghpc6.ihf.rwth-aachen.de> Subject: Re: doc directory To: asami@cs.berkeley.edu (Satoshi Asami) Date: Mon, 4 Mar 1996 11:57:09 +0100 (MET) From: "Thomas Gellekum" Cc: adam@veda.is, chuckr@Glue.umd.edu, thomas@ghpc8.ihf.rwth-aachen.de, freebsd-ports@freebsd.org In-Reply-To: <199603012121.NAA01260@sunrise.cs.berkeley.edu> from "Satoshi Asami" at Mar 1, 96 01:21:52 pm Organization: Institut f. I think we also proposed a new variable in /etc/make.conf, something like ${NOPORTDOCS). Porters could then conditionalize the installation of additional docs by .if !defined(NOPORTDOCS) .endif similar to ${NOMANCOMPRESS}. At the time there was less strict control over the contents of bsd.port.mk, but I do remember bringing up for discussion the subject of renaming patchfiles (optionally in a subdirectory). > And according to the new and trusty xargs and grep, only net/dgd uses > this variable, which further intrigues the wondering mind why it had > to be done in the main .mk file. Yes, dgd is currently the only port to use this mechanism. However, it is only the rather unclear documentation that has been a hinderance to other ports making effective use of it. I believe this functionality to be of sufficiently general use to be present in bsd.port.mk. > Can you please explain me what it intends to do? By setting PATCH_PRFX to a suitable value, all files in ${PATCHFILES} are renamed during fetch into /usr/ports/distfiles, and are accessed from the new locations there. This is useful when one port has many patchfiles (in which case it makes sense to group them in a subdirectory), or when a few patchfiles have unclear names (in which case it makes sense to prefix a port-specific name component). If ${PATCH_PRFX} ends in '/' the subdirectory path is automatically created during fetch and the patchfiles are moved into this directory, otherwise the files are renamed by adding the prefix. It is the responsibility of individual port Makefiles to set PATCH_PRFX uniquely (when it is used), so that it does not conflict with other residents of /usr/ports/distfiles. ${PATCH_PRFX} is matched against '/$' (bug: this should have been '^[^/].*/$'). Hovever, I see now that matching against '^[^/].*/.*' would make better sense and is more generic, therefore an improvement. -- Adam David From owner-freebsd-ports Wed Mar 6 13:19:05 1996 Return-Path: owner-ports Received: (from root@localhost) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.7.3/8.7.3) id NAA25482 for ports-outgoing; Wed, 6 Mar 1996 13:19:05 -0800 (PST) Received: from news1.gtn.com (news1.gtn.com [192.109.159.3]) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.7.3/8.7.3) with ESMTP id NAA25477 for ; Wed, 6 Mar 1996 13:19:01 -0800 (PST) Received: (from uucp@localhost) by news1.gtn.com (8.7.2/8.7.2) id WAA10979; Wed, 6 Mar 1996 22:00:22 +0100 (MET) Received: from knobel.gun.de (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by knobel.gun.de (8.7.4/8.7.3) with SMTP id VAA00625; Wed, 6 Mar 1996 21:55:46 +0100 (MET) Date: Wed, 6 Mar 1996 21:55:46 +0100 (MET) From: Andreas Klemm To: Satoshi Asami cc: ports@freebsd.org Subject: Re: update of harvest port (www/harvest) In-Reply-To: <199603060935.BAA16511@silvia.HIP.Berkeley.EDU> Message-ID: MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: TEXT/PLAIN; charset=US-ASCII Sender: owner-ports@freebsd.org Precedence: bulk On Wed, 6 Mar 1996, Satoshi Asami wrote: > * Here is an update for the harvest port. > * a) new release pl2, pl1 can't be found anymore, so this is essential > * for this port to work properly > * b) patches (new!) to include CFLAGS from /etc/make.conf > * c) patches (new!) to include instead of > > Thanks, I changed it a little and committed it. This is useful when * one port has many patchfiles (in which case it makes sense to group * them in a subdirectory), or when a few patchfiles have unclear * names (in which case it makes sense to prefix a port-specific name * component). Ok. I was considering adding a new variable for putting all files (distfiles + patchfiles) in a subdirectory. Currently some ports just get around this by defining ${DISTDIR} = ${PORTSDIR}/distfiles/. Is it ok if I take out all the PATCH_PRFX hacks and replace it with something like DISTDIR ?= ${PORTSDIR}/distfiles/${DISTDIR_PRFX}/ ? That will take care of all the ports that have "Makefile"s and such among their distfiles, as well as the patchfile situation you described. The only difference (for you) would be that the distfile itself will go to the subdirectory as well (which is probably a good thing anyway). It won't do any renaming, but putting them in a subdirectory should be good enough. DISTDIR_SUFX or DISTFILES_SUBDIR would probably be a better variable name, I prefer the latter. > It won't do any renaming, but putting them in a subdirectory should be > good enough. Since they will all be grouped together in a unique subdir, there is less need for renaming. The main reason that I wanted to enable renaming was to avoid situations where a port with very few additional files (with unclear names) would require a subdirectory. Putting the main distfile in the subdirectory is fine by me, but I do have some aversion to seeing files with very long names residing in directories which are named almost identically to the file. :) I'll get over it... ;) -- Adam David From owner-freebsd-ports Wed Mar 6 15:42:16 1996 Return-Path: owner-ports Received: (from root@localhost) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.7.3/8.7.3) id PAA10369 for ports-outgoing; Wed, 6 Mar 1996 15:42:16 -0800 (PST) Received: from veda.is (veda.is [193.4.230.1]) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.7.3/8.7.3) with ESMTP id PAA10363 for ; Wed, 6 Mar 1996 15:42:05 -0800 (PST) Received: (from adam@localhost) by veda.is (8.7.4/8.7.3) id XAA07033; Wed, 6 Mar 1996 23:41:21 GMT From: Adam David Message-Id: <199603062341.XAA07033@veda.is> Subject: Re: PATCH_PRFX in bsd.port.mk To: asami@cs.berkeley.edu (Satoshi Asami) Date: Wed, 6 Mar 1996 23:41:18 +0000 (GMT) Cc: ports@freebsd.org In-Reply-To: <199603062241.OAA01391@sunrise.cs.berkeley.edu> from Satoshi Asami at "Mar 6, 96 02:41:53 pm" X-Mailer: ELM [version 2.4ME+ PL10 (25)] MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=US-ASCII Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Sender: owner-ports@freebsd.org Precedence: bulk > > Ok. It's essentially the same as the 1.2.10 port but with the patches stripped out -- they failed to apply to the new ssh distribution and didn't seem to be necessary. If they're necessary, you'll need to hack them back in. Sorry. The old port doesn't work now -- the old ssh 1.2.10 archive has vanished from ftp.freebsd.org, the mirrors, and all of the ssh mirror sites I tried. If it hadn't been for that, I probably wouldn't have hacked his meagre offering together. I've also added a new ssh mirror site at ftp.germany.eu.net and generated an md5 checksum for the ssh distribution archive. I DID NOT PGP VERIFY THE SSH ARCHIVE. Someone more [justifiably] paranoid than I may want to check that I used the right archive. Just out of interest, the tarball that is on the master server is generated by a script each night and checked to see if it needs updating.
