These represent problem reports covering all versions fo FreeBSD including experimental development code and obsolete releases. Bugs can be in one of several states: o - open A problem report has been submitted, no sanity checking performed. a - analyzed The report has been examined by a team member and evaluated. f - feedback The problem has been solved, and the originator has been given a patch or a fix has been committed. The PR remains in this state pending a response from the originator. s - suspended Work on the problem has been postponed. This happens if a timely solution is not possible or is not cost-effective at the present time. The PR continues to exist, though a solution is not being actively sought. If the problem cannot be solved at all, it will be closed, rather than suspended. c - closed A problem report is closed when any changes have been integrated, documented, and tested. This doesn't sound like any kind of subject for a FreeBSD ports pr. This is _linux_'s libc, not FreeBSD's libc. We cannot modify a linux binary. One could argue that our Linux emulation might be able to better handle this one, but the Linux emulation is not part of ports, so this pr will never get closed. The FreeBSD port is of the linux libc, and that's what it successfuly does; it's not a port of linux compatibility, which is part of the FreeBSD kernel, not part of the port. This will become a forever pr .... I think that this might be brought up on the -current mailing list better; it doesn't seem possible to resolve this as a ports issue. I'd want to either close this pr, or shift it to another category. Check the bug reports database (bin/1643) for the discussion on this. About the NOMANCOMPRESS, this ensures that there is no way for OpenBSD users to turn this off, which certeanly doesn't seem like a good idea. Of course that's not our problem, but...well, I dunno. * -.if (${OPSYS} == "NetBSD") * +.if exists(/usr/bin/md5) * MD5?= /usr/bin/md5 * +.elif exists(/bin/md5) * +MD5?= /bin/md5 * +.elif exists(/usr/local/bin/md5) * +MD5?= /usr/local/bin/md5 * .else * MD5?= /sbin/md5 * .endif I like this idea in general but what is /usr/local/bin doing here??? (If we are going to support Solaris, you have much other things to worry about, I'm afraid.) This is definitely NOT going to go in, at least in this form (/sbin after /usr/local/bin??? Puh-leeze). * +.if (${OPSYS} == "OpenBSD") * +FETCH_CMD?= /usr/bin/ftp * +.else * FETCH_CMD?= /usr/bin/fetch * +.endif Why don't we use "if exists()" here? Does OpenBSD have a /usr/bin/fetch that doesn't work like ours? More to the point though... which version of bsd.port.mk will ship with 2.2 and is there any reason for it to be different from the latest in -current? It would seem that only absolutely necessary minimum differences should exist between 2.2 and 3.0-current(2.2-release-date), and it would be worthwhile for both freefall and thud to have the latest appropriate version installed. Please send me copies of the damaged message complete with headers, both your copy and the one in the archive on freefall (since I'm not getting an http connection at the moment), and we can continue to track this bug down in private. It is worth being aware of potential holes and pitfalls, whichever path is taken. Should the results of 'make makesum' and 'make checksum' be inconsistent between freefall and thud? At the moment, freefall omits to expand DIST_SUBDIR into files/md5. Or would you prefer to remove bsd.port.mk from freefall altogether, since it is broken there? > There. One more file to be transferred during a potentially brief window of connectivity, and greater complexity of commands to issue in order to commit a trivial upgrade (requiring changes only to the toplevel Makefile). Remote cvs is usually sufficient for most purposes, but might be too heaviweight at times. In the worst conditions, "ctm commit" would be the answer. If freefall is to be excluded as a site for fetching distfiles and doing checksums, might it not be better to explicitly disable or remove bsd.port.mk? On the other hand for the sake of consistency and least surprise, the file could be updated to a functional version. The main issue here is one of manifest policy rather than incidental side-effects of omission. At present it's use is allowed but fails in unexpected ways. Individual ports may be expected to fail for version < current, but this is a failure of the ports system itself which produces misleading errors. That's probably all I have to say on the subject. It'd be I know, we don't really like this type of solution very much... but I hate to see for "backwards" compatability hold us back for ever in fixing a problem... there has been so much breakage in the unix/language world because people were afraid to fix the problem because there was "too many" current users... then years later when people wanted to fix it they found an order of magnitude of users and then it was too late to fix it... It is supposed to be cleaned after a port is committed. But sometimes the committer never gets around to it. And then once in a while we get a massive warez (or whatever) attack and the sysadmin cleans up everything. As it is now plainly obvious, this is bad. Maybe we should arrange a different location for ports uploads only. * 2) Can I still submit ports for a future release during the freeze? Sure. But if it is for "future release"s only, then it won't be committed during the freeze, as there are no branches in the ports tree. Actually, if it works fine for the current release, it may even be committed during the freeze (nothing's different from normal times, except it needs my permission). Many people simply drop their ports without sending a PR and no one looks until the port is rather old. (That's the case with URT, I have almost ready a version 3.1p1, and I found a submitted 3.1 port). There were also some instructions about how to download a pirate version of Visual Basic, which is 1) illegal and 2) of little use for Fbsd users.! I am certain that it is not just my copy of the program. I do know that I did not ask for quoted-printable when I sent actual iso-8859-1 data to myself, and I did not get quoted-printable when I sent myself again the message that precipitated the original complaint.
