I tried to use the latest patches but it appears that the FreeBSD server nolomger carries the 2.2-ALPHA but only the 2.2-BETA. It seemed that the best approach would be to use the patches against 2.1.5R. I got past a problem with the modem seral port using the options information in the laptop survey. I have not yet been able to configure X but I still have some things to try. The real problem I am having is with my 3Com 3c589C Combo card. I can not get it to use the BNC connector. I will take it to work tomorrow to see if the UTP port actually works. In any case any hints would be welcome. This works well with the Tecra 730's C&T chipset. As I understand it, the modem has no firmware - the code that the modem runs on is loaded into it by software, and since IBM doesn't make the source available :( it's not likely anybody could write drivers for other os's. One idea I had was to see if the win drivers would run under wine, but I never got around to trying it - got a new external modem instead. The Tecra uses the same chipset as my NEC, so it should work fine. (IBM uses the WD90c24 set, but apparently uses a 'tweaked' monitor so it won't work with either XFree86 and/or Xaccel. :( ) > I am seeing some problems with fvwm which I loaded off the 2.1.5 CD > so I am considering going back to 2.1.5 with the eailer PAO patches > and also 2.2-BETA with no patches. I don't know if the pccard code has enough smarts to force it to use a different connector if the card is hard-coded to use one or the other. The modem requires a DOS-mode device in order to act as a modem, so I suspect you won't get it working unless you can drag the programming information out of IBM. I haven't heard of *any* drivers working on the 755CX, and I can't even get X to work in 800x600 mode under any of the free *nices on it. If you have better luck let me know, since that's what stopping me from switching to that box as my main laptop. I installed 2.1.6 + XF8632 + PAO. I had some problems with this, I don't remember exactally what now but since I needed XF8632 for my video chipset I decided to try 2.2-BETA. I installed 2.2-BETA + XF8632. This almost worked but while running X + fvwm1.24r the keybord stopped working. The mouse continued to work and the window manager continued to work but the keyboard did not. I decided to try to apply the PAO patches PAO-961215. I was able to apply the patches by removing the patches to if_fe.c and hand applying the patch to files.i386. I could not apply the patch to i386/isa/psm.c. The keyboard still locks up under X + fvwm-1.24r, restarting the X server brings the keyboard back. I will try another window manager but any hints. clues, suggestions would help. Also any hints on how to get the ps/2 mouse driver to work without causing the keyboard to stop working would be usefull. The 3c589c-combo. It is brand new.. I have used it under win95 with both the UTP and BNC, at least once trying the BNC under FreeBSD immediately using the BNC under win95. I have tried using the 3com utility to set the connector type both under win95 and msdos 6.0. I will try again but and suggestions gratefully accepted. You've already tried messing with the link flags, correct? Try messing with the link2 flag as well. It seems to work fine on my system, but the old driver also works. As soon as we shake it out a bit more (Soren was going to look at it this weekend as well) it'll be committed. If nothing has been done by one of us by early next week send me some email and I can send it to you. I would now but I'm headed for bed. Are you using the ep0 driver or the zp0 driver? If the former, then you have to stop/restart pccard everytime you modify /etc/pccard.conf to mess with the link flags. The Motorola-Montana of course. :) :) (I'm quite biased as a native and current resident of the state with no 'official' speed limit.) Honestly though, I had pretty good luck with the previous cell-modem that Motorola made, the Motorola-Power. I decided to try to apply the PAO patches PAO-961215. > >They don't affect the keyboard. I think there can be two possible reasons why the keyboard looks locked up while the mouse continues to work: The first possibility is that this is real lock up; the keyboard and the keyboard controller cannot communicate properly. Communication MAY be restored by instructing the keyboard controller to test the keyboard port. This can be done from the console driver, but in practice it would be difficult for the driver to decide when it should do it. The second possible explanation is that due to a lost keyboard interrupt, shift, ctrl, alt, num lock, or whatever shift/lock state change is not seen by the console driver or the X server and a key stroke is not interpreted properly, thus, the keyboard looks locked up despite that key scan codes are received by the console driver. You may be able to recover from this by tapping these shift/lock keys several times. The interrupt problem existed before, and we have been hoping to eliminate it with the new syscons/psm/kbdio drivers, but... >> The keyboard still locks up under X + fvwm-1.24r, restarting the X >> server brings the keyboard back. > >*sigh* I suspect you could switch to another virtual terminal and do the >same thing, but w/out a keyboard it's kinda hard. :( Well, it appears that the second explanation above is more likely to be the case, as I don't think resetting the X server affect the state of the data line between the keyboard and the keyboard controller in any way.
