The correct link, IMO, would be to ftp.de.freebsd.org, which should--as a complete mirror--also provide the newsletter. >http://ftp.freebsd.org/pub/FreeBSD/newsletter/issue1.pdf is no faster :) Sure? Within Europe, or at least Germany, providers are making use of a hierarchy of proxy caches (with Squid), and chances are that a nearer copy already exists. Admittedly, this hold true for FTP via [your favorite browser] also, but in case of PDF it still has two advantages: - is feels more responsive, due to the smaller set-up time for a connection, if the original must be fetched from ftp.freebsd.org. - If you're using the Acrobat plug-in, the plug-in could load only the first page, if the PDF was created correctly (as a version 1.2), thus increasing the "it's faster" feeling. (I did't check.) >I'll see about putting up a html version which can truly be mirrored. This is a good idea and it has been batted around in the past. The current difficulty is that the ports collection is continually evolving and the web pages (mostly) track that evolution. The packages tend to be built less frequently and on a different schedule so it is likely that many ports don't actually have a matching package, or if there is one it might be for an earlier version. A solution wouldn't be difficult to work out, but would require some non-trivial resource consumption to keep the package collection in sync with the ports collection. -john From owner-freebsd-www Mon Aug 11 21:07:11 1997 Return-Path: Received: (from root@localhost) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.5/8.8.5) id VAA26225 for www-outgoing; Mon, 11 Aug 1997 21:07:11 -0700 (PDT) Received: from time.cdrom.com (root@time.cdrom.com [204.216.27.226]) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.5/8.8.5) with ESMTP id VAA26216 for ; Mon, 11 Aug 1997 21:07:03 -0700 (PDT) Received: from time.cdrom.com (jkh@localhost.cdrom.com [127.0.0.1]) by time.cdrom.com (8.8.6/8.6.9) with ESMTP id VAA14216; Mon, 11 Aug 1997 21:06:22 -0700 (PDT) To: Bryan Copeland cc: www@FreeBSD.ORG Subject: Re: FreeBSD Related Publications In-reply-to: Your message of "Mon, 11 Aug 1997 20:55:11 CDT." <01IMBU9DKMNE9D54FK@MAIL-CLUSTER.PCY.MCI.NET> Date: Mon, 11 Aug 1997 21:06:21 -0700 Message-ID: <14212.871358781@time.cdrom.com> From: "Jordan K. We'll look into adding the URL reference to the appropriate locations on the web site so that not just the PDF file is referenced. We probably also want to amend the Newsflash entry for this so that the web option is properly indicated. I want to order your CD version. But does the package include Spice and other popular FREE UNIX applications? Can I download the newest version from your site with no charge? Will it be better than Linux? Last of all, I want to install it on my D: drive instead of C: which is occupied by Windows 95 currently. Is is possible to do that? Your early reply will be very appreciated. Its pretty simple to setup, and works well with majordomo. There is a nice search engine for MHonArc'ed WWW pages named marc-search, which I use (not a port currently). Also, I noticed that our current searchable archives are a tad out of date; some queries I sent out a month ago are yet to appear when searched for. I have also worked at an internet server. My duties included, customer technical support (helping customers over the phone and in person), HTML and Visual Basic programming, graphic design, and Network Administration. I was in charge of maintaining and installing servers on the network which consisted of Windows 95, Windows NT 4.0 and Linux 3.0 based machines. Since my employment at the internet server described above, I have also become fairly proficient in Java using Visual J++ and JDK. I am currently taking time to learn Perl and continuing my studies of Java. As for my personality, I am easy to get along with, respect authority, learn quickly and I'm a hard worker. I couldn't really understand it on Apache's > homepage... Apache is the actual HTTP server that runs on your machine, that browsers contact when they want pages from your computer. It's the brains behind the entire Web operation. > Do I get a free web space or something? Well, if you have a FreeBSD (or other UNIX) machine with sufficient disk space and a link to the outside world, you can run Apache and make your own "free" web space. :-) Doug White | University of Oregon Internet: dwhite@resnet.uoregon.edu | Residence Networking Assistant http://gladstone.uoregon.edu/~dwhite | Computer Science Major Spam routed to /dev/null by Procmail | Death to Cyberpromo From owner-freebsd-www Wed Aug 13 15:46:22 1997 Return-Path: Received: (from root@localhost) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.5/8.8.5) id PAA04466 for www-outgoing; Wed, 13 Aug 1997 15:46:22 -0700 (PDT) Received: from powergrid.electriciti.com (root@powergrid.electriciti.com [198.5.212.11]) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.5/8.8.5) with ESMTP id PAA04433 for ; Wed, 13 Aug 1997 15:46:10 -0700 (PDT) Received: from circuit.electriciti.com (coder@circuit.electriciti.com [198.5.212.12]) by powergrid.electriciti.com (8.8.5/8.8.5) with ESMTP id PAA13790 for ; Wed, 13 Aug 1997 15:54:51 -0700 (PDT) Received: (from coder@localhost) by circuit.electriciti.com (8.8.5/8.8.5) id PAA16279; Wed, 13 Aug 1997 15:40:40 -0700 (PDT) Date: Wed, 13 Aug 1997 15:40:40 -0700 (PDT) Message-Id: <199708132240.PAA16279@circuit.electriciti.com> to: www@freebsd.org from: matto@love.org Sender: owner-freebsd-www@freebsd.org X-Loop: FreeBSD.org Precedence: bulk Where could I get some keen FreeBSD stickers? ;) keep up the good work, btw. --Matt From owner-freebsd-www Wed Aug 13 15:48:05 1997 Return-Path: Received: (from root@localhost) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.5/8.8.5) id PAA04602 for www-outgoing; Wed, 13 Aug 1997 15:48:05 -0700 (PDT) Received: from xenon.xe.com (xenon.xe.com [204.187.105.2]) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.5/8.8.5) with SMTP id PAA04535 for ; Wed, 13 Aug 1997 15:47:58 -0700 (PDT) Received: by xenon.xe.com (SMI-8.6/SMI-SVR4) id SAA21283; Wed, 13 Aug 1997 18:46:30 -0400 Date: Wed, 13 Aug 1997 18:46:29 -0400 (EDT) From: Beric Farmer X-Sender: bfarmer@xenon.xe.com To: www@freebsd.org Subject: Incorrectly set up mirror site Message-ID: MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: TEXT/PLAIN; charset=US-ASCII Sender: owner-freebsd-www@freebsd.org X-Loop: FreeBSD.org Precedence: bulk Hello. ftp5.freebsd.org has no /pub/FreeBSD directory...
