I also found it in /etc/rc.i386 but I think I may have a problem with the modes on many of my files in /etc and possibly rc.i386 is not getting run. I need to look into it further. What is the prescribed method for installing files from /usr/src/etc into /etc and getting the permissions right ? Should one just run "make distribution" from /usr/src/etc ? or is one meant to examine the Makefile and just set the permissions manually after copying files into /etc ? Most of them are data files or shell sourcesand don't need special permissions. I normally install them with install -D -D -p -o root -g wheel -m 644 The Makefile only gives 755 permissions to netstart and pccard_ether. Many of the shell sources begin with !#/bin/sh, but this is bogus except for these two files. rc.i386, rc.network, rc.pccard can't even work right when they are exec'ed directly, since they depend on rc.conf being sourced previously to set the options. It's because I've been upgrading my /etc files by copying files in /usr/src/etc into etc maintaining the hierarchy I've found in the source directory. I now know I should have looked more closely at the Makefile to see that the /usr/src/etc/etc.i386 files are actually stored in /etc instead of /etc/etc.i386. It turns out that I have an old copy of /etc/rc.i386 which had the old rc.conf variable name for the linux module i.e. "linux" instead of "linux_enable". It all works fine when I copy things to their correct home. As for my script "etcud" that I sent in via send-pr, I use it all the time and hence the linux trouble! I will change the script to reflect the real locations of selected files but really the script should be incorporated as a target in the Makefile somehow so that it will always be up to date. Another one to add; you can't use X with /dev/psm0, you have to use /dev/npsm0. MAKEDEV creates /dev/psm0 as the nonblocking device, but the psm driver registers this as the blocking device. Symptoms are that the X server freezes unless you are moving the mouse. The files will be installed (or symlinked, as an option) from there to /usr/include/machine (in case $current_machine == "i386", of course ;). -- cheers, J"org joerg_wunsch@uriah.heep.sax.de -- http://www.sax.de/~joerg/ -- NIC: JW11-RIPE Never trust an operating system you don't have sources for. ;-) From owner-freebsd-current Sat Jan 3 15:38:59 1998 Return-Path: Received: (from root@localhost) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.7/8.8.7) id PAA11299 for current-outgoing; Sat, 3 Jan 1998 15:38:59 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from owner-freebsd-current) Received: from zibbi.mikom.csir.co.za (zibbi.mikom.csir.co.za [146.64.24.58]) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.7/8.8.7) with ESMTP id PAA11286 for ; Sat, 3 Jan 1998 15:38:50 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from pallenby@zibbi.mikom.csir.co.za) Received: (from pallenby@localhost) by zibbi.mikom.csir.co.za (8.8.8/8.8.7) id BAA17767 for freebsd-current@freebsd.org; Sun, 4 Jan 1998 01:38:39 +0200 (SAT) From: Paul Allenby Message-Id: <199801032338.BAA17767@zibbi.mikom.csir.co.za> Subject: bsd.own.mk make troubles To: freebsd-current@freebsd.org Date: Sun, 4 Jan 1998 01:38:39 +0200 (SAT) X-Mailer: ELM [version 2.4ME+ PL32 (25)] MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=US-ASCII Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Sender: owner-freebsd-current@freebsd.org X-Loop: FreeBSD.org Precedence: bulk Hi all The following occurs with make world , cvsup'd a few minutes ago: "/usr/src/share/mk/bsd.own.mk", line 126: Need an operator "/usr/src/share/mk/bsd.own.mk", line 127: Need an operator make: fatal errors encountered -- cannot continue *** Error code 1 Any pointers gratefully received :-) Paul From owner-freebsd-current Sat Jan 3 19:21:20 1998 Return-Path: Received: (from root@localhost) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.7/8.8.7) id TAA24468 for current-outgoing; Sat, 3 Jan 1998 19:21:20 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from owner-freebsd-current) Received: from ocean.campus.luth.se (ocean.campus.luth.se [130.240.194.116]) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.7/8.8.7) with ESMTP id TAA24462 for ; Sat, 3 Jan 1998 19:21:08 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from karpen@ocean.campus.luth.se) Received: (from karpen@localhost) by ocean.campus.luth.se (8.8.8/8.8.8) id EAA12809; Sun, 4 Jan 1998 04:18:57 +0100 (CET) (envelope-from karpen) From: Mikael Karpberg Message-Id: <199801040318.EAA12809@ocean.campus.luth.se> Subject: Re: bsd.own.mk make troubles In-Reply-To: <199801032338.BAA17767@zibbi.mikom.csir.co.za> from Paul Allenby at "Jan 4, 98 01:38:39 am" To: pallenby@zibbi.mikom.csir.co.za (Paul Allenby) Date: Sun, 4 Jan 1998 04:18:57 +0100 (CET) Cc: freebsd-current@FreeBSD.ORG X-Mailer: ELM [version 2.4ME+ PL32 (25)] MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=US-ASCII Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Sender: owner-freebsd-current@FreeBSD.ORG X-Loop: FreeBSD.org Precedence: bulk According to Paul Allenby: > "/usr/src/share/mk/bsd.own.mk", line 126: Need an operator > "/usr/src/share/mk/bsd.own.mk", line 127: Need an operator > make: fatal errors encountered -- cannot continue > *** Error code 1 Yeah, I ran into that also.
