I encounter the same problem when booting from the CDROM directly. I don't have this problem with my 486 machine or my DELL machine at work. Is there any way to halt the installation process to see what's happening at the end of the probe step? It's our fault Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii X-Mailer: Mutt 0.88e Sender: owner-freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk X-Loop: FreeBSD.org Have you noticed increasing numbers of questions posted to freebsd-doc? Do you really think these newcomers clicked their way through the web site until they got down to the list charters, and decided that freebsd-doc was more appropriate than freebsd-questions? Not likely! I think they're coming from mailto.html. Many of the pages have a link at the bottom for asking questions. That link in most cases leads to mailto.html which has two paragraphs. They go there, see an email link in the first paragraph, and click on it. Note also that they are not given the slightest suggestion that their mail might be going to a public list rather than to an individual. Apart from considering this when responding to questions posted here, I think we should reverse the order of those two paragraphs in mailto.html so that people will write to -questions as intended, instead of -doc. I'd also think it fairer to advise people that they are in fact posting to a mailing list. I'm not sure why others don't think that's necessary. So how do changes like this get made? By the way, there is a big lie on that page :-) It says that mail to freebsd-info@freebsd.org will do something. It doesn't. Does anyone know what's going on here? -- Regards, -*Sue*- To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-doc" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-doc Mon May 4 19:24:01 1998 Return-Path: Received: (from majordom@localhost) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) id TAA00204 for freebsd-doc-outgoing; Mon, 4 May 1998 19:24:01 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from owner-freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.ORG) Received: from ppp6586.on.bellglobal.com (ppp1554.on.bellglobal.com [206.172.249.18]) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) with ESMTP id TAA00104; Mon, 4 May 1998 19:23:26 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from ac199@hwcn.org) Received: from localhost (tim@localhost) by ppp6586.on.bellglobal.com (8.8.8/8.8.8) with SMTP id WAA00662; Mon, 4 May 1998 22:21:40 -0400 (EDT) (envelope-from ac199@hwcn.org) X-Authentication-Warning: ppp6586.on.bellglobal.com: tim owned process doing -bs Date: Mon, 4 May 1998 22:21:40 -0400 (EDT) From: Tim Vanderhoek X-Sender: tim@ppp6586.on.bellglobal.com Reply-To: ac199@hwcn.org To: FreeBSD bugmaster cc: doc@FreeBSD.ORG Subject: Re: Current problem reports assigned to you In-Reply-To: <199805041800.LAA27051@freefall.freebsd.org> Message-ID: MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: TEXT/PLAIN; charset=US-ASCII Sender: owner-freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk X-Loop: FreeBSD.org On Mon, 4 May 1998, FreeBSD bugmaster wrote: > Date: Mon, 4 May 1998 11:00:26 -0700 (PDT) > From: FreeBSD bugmaster > To: doc@FreeBSD.ORG > Subject: Current problem reports assigned to you > Why do only PRs that are mis-assigned to doc (instead of freebsd-doc) show-up here? -- This .sig is not innovative, witty, or profund. Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Sender: owner-freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk X-Loop: FreeBSD.org Hello, and thanks for your time. I have been looking through the handbook, the FAQ, and the book 'The Complete FreeBSD', and I just cannot find any documentation relevant to setting up a modem to work under FreeBSD. All of the docs I have located so far tell you how to configure the kernel for the serial port (done, checks out ok), and how to make the device with ./MAKEDEV (done, cuaa1 for com2). OK so far, but danged if I can get the port to work. When I try to run seyon, it complains the port is not configured, and then dies. I cannot send commands to the port either. In short, I am lost as to how to configure the port. If the port is configured in the kernel (and 'dmesg | grep sio' returns values that work with linux and os2), and /dev/cuaa1 exist, what have I neglected to do? This makes handling the CD-ROM's unfriendly under FreeBSD, since it insert/mount/browse/umount/remove is a lengthy process and requires root access for the mount/umount sequence. The existing comment "Please see README.TXT" doesn't cut it with a collection this large, to examine all four disks requires a total of 20 steps. >How-To-Repeat: Open CD-ROM package. Examine disks for contents. Start mounting. >Fix: Provide reasonable summary one line summary of actual contents of disk on each label, and also in the booklet.
