So what? You know, English is not my mother tongue, and I'm not a lawyer :-), but from what my eyes see I understand that you cannot install the program on more than one computer (and this is definitely not a port issue) and that you cannot distribute the tarball (and the port is marked restricted, so nobody making a release will include it into the release itself). Moreover, they state that you cannot install on more than one computer, but say anything about using on 2, 3, 4 or one hundred computers. In any case I don't think they would prevent you from using their software from more than one computer, one a time. Last but not least, they do not speak about multi user installation (that's what the port does). My apologies to the freebsd-java subscriptors for this O.T. Follow ups to freebsd-ports or to private email. Tnx. P.S.: the port will surely not be commited now, due to the port tree being frozen for the 2.2.6 release. > Johan Bye, UP To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-java" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-java Sun Mar 22 15:08:51 1998 Return-Path: Received: (from majordom@localhost) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) id PAA23001 for freebsd-java-outgoing; Sun, 22 Mar 1998 15:08:51 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from owner-freebsd-java@FreeBSD.ORG) Received: from zed.ludd.luth.se (zed.ludd.luth.se [130.240.16.33]) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) with ESMTP id PAA22982; Sun, 22 Mar 1998 15:08:46 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from gozer@ludd.luth.se) Received: from sister.ludd.luth.se (gozer@sister.ludd.luth.se [130.240.16.77]) by zed.ludd.luth.se (8.8.5/8.8.5) with SMTP id BAA23250; Mon, 23 Mar 1998 01:08:35 +0200 Date: Mon, 23 Mar 1998 00:08:34 +0100 (MET) From: Johan Larsson To: Ugo Paternostro cc: freebsd-java@FreeBSD.ORG, "David E. Do you have access to other Java-capable machines? It might help if we can determine that it's the RmiJdbc library itself or a particular virtual machine's implementation that's causing it to be so slow. I hate to admit it, but Microsoft's "jview" virtual machine which I downloaded for free from the web site earlier this year is amazingly fast. With Emacs and GNU make available on Windows NT, I'm almost tempted to do Java development in such an environment. The M$ compiler is blazingly fast, too. > 1s pause > URL: jdbc:rmi://pcwin126/jdbc:odbc:rjdemo (before the Connection is made) > 1 min pause > TUPLE: | 1 | Ellison | Larry | larry@oracle.com | (results spit out 10/s) > TUPLE: | 2 | Clark | Jim | jim@netscape.com | I guess I'm so optimistic that people will eventually get JIT and dynamic compilers onto every platform that I stick with the language despite this terrible speed. As Tom Cargill pointed out: * C++ runs about 3 times as fast. * It takes about 1/3 as long to develop in Java. Each company/project will have to determine what's more important. --Sean To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-java" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-java Tue Mar 24 14:37:50 1998 Return-Path: Received: (from majordom@localhost) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) id OAA12485 for freebsd-java-outgoing; Tue, 24 Mar 1998 14:37:50 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from owner-freebsd-java@FreeBSD.ORG) Received: from www.video-collage.com (www.video-collage.com [206.15.171.132]) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) with ESMTP id OAA12477; Tue, 24 Mar 1998 14:37:48 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from mi@xxx.video-collage.com) Received: from xxx.video-collage.com (xxx.video-collage.com [199.232.254.68]) by www.video-collage.com (8.8.5/8.8.5) with ESMTP id RAA05557; Tue, 24 Mar 1998 17:36:01 -0500 (EST) Received: (from mi@localhost) by xxx.video-collage.com (8.8.8/8.8.7) id RAA05973; Tue, 24 Mar 1998 17:37:32 -0500 (EST) (envelope-from mi) From: Mikhail Teterin Message-Id: <199803242237.RAA05973@xxx.video-collage.com> Subject: JMark2.0 To: java@FreeBSD.ORG Date: Tue, 24 Mar 1998 17:37:32 -0500 (EST) Cc: cracauer@FreeBSD.ORG Reply-To: mi@aldan.algebra.com X-Mailer: ELM [version 2.4ME+ PL35 (25)] MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=US-ASCII Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Sender: owner-freebsd-java@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk X-Loop: FreeBSD.org Hello! Please, excuse me if this is a wring address for such information. I've just downloaded and ran the JMark2.0 -- Pure Java certified java benchmark -- from ftp://ftp.zdnet.com/pub/zdbop/jmark/jm20sol.tar.gz I have the latest JDK from ports (2.25). The benchmark runs as appletviewer index.htm (FreeBSD's netscape does not support Java 1.1 fully). There are some problems however: * free() reports junk pointers from java_X 4 times * data in text entry fields can be entered but can not be seen (the characters are below the edge of the text entry widget) * the results can not be saved (I am not sure if appletviewer can save anything, but a save option is offered) I hope this can help tuning/fixing the JDK. My machine is a single PPro200 with 256K cache. 128Mb of RAM. I have my own Motif 2.0 from Xinside and their X-server (v3.1) operating on Matrox with 4Mb of VRAM in 1600x1200 mode. Maybe one of the hackers is up to the job of tracking down the bugs in DDD/Java. You can run an app , set a break point , and browse at the data structures or source; however, if you interrupt a running app jdb seems hang. Currently, downloading Java Studio 8) Have Fun ! I've successfully used it with FreeBSD 2.2.2, 2.2.5-stable, and 2.2.6-beta, I've yet to use it w/ 2.2.6-stable. This was also w/ XFree86 3.2, 3.3.1, and 3.3.2. I've found it to be useful for the projects I do my Java work in (thus far they are all for my college CS courses). In case you are interested in looking at it, go to http://www.alphaworks.ibm.com and just search for "Jikes Debugger". >Nate John Baldwin -- jobaldwi@vt.edu -- jbaldwin@freedomnet.com -- ---- http://www.freedomnet.com/~jbaldwin/ ---- "I believe He paid the price/A sacrafice so we could be together/Forever." - PFR To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-java" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-java Sat Mar 28 17:09:24 1998 Return-Path: Received: (from majordom@localhost) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) id RAA06717 for freebsd-java-outgoing; Sat, 28 Mar 1998 17:09:24 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from owner-freebsd-java@FreeBSD.ORG) Received: from rah.star-gate.com (rah.star-gate.com [209.133.7.234]) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) with ESMTP id RAA06710 for ; Sat, 28 Mar 1998 17:09:19 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from hasty@rah.star-gate.com) Received: from rah.star-gate.com (localhost.star-gate.com [127.0.0.1]) by rah.star-gate.com (8.8.8/8.8.8) with ESMTP id RAA27699; Sat, 28 Mar 1998 17:08:32 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from hasty@rah.star-gate.com) Message-Id: <199803290108.RAA27699@rah.star-gate.com> X-Mailer: exmh version 2.0.2 2/24/98 To: John Baldwin cc: Nate Williams , java@FreeBSD.ORG Subject: Re: JWS 2.0 works in FreeBSD 8) In-reply-to: Your message of "Sat, 28 Mar 1998 20:02:09 EST." <3.0.1.32.19980328200209.0098d730@mail.vt.edu> Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Date: Sat, 28 Mar 1998 17:08:32 -0800 From: Amancio Hasty Sender: owner-freebsd-java@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk X-Loop: FreeBSD.org Oh, I think that we know about Jikes. Does it work with significantly complex multi-threaded programs that use external events and the AWT? The standard debuggers work well if I single step into them, but fail on anything that actually requires a debugger.
