Message-ID: MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: TEXT/PLAIN; charset=US-ASCII Sender: owner-freebsd-mobile@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk X-Loop: FreeBSD.org Hi everyone, I received a Hitachi VisionBook PRO from my employer yesterday. All excited, I downloaded the 2.2.7.1 boot floppy from freebsd.org and tried it out. Right before doing this, I booted into Windows and took note of the ethernet card: a "AMD PCNET family" card. I did a quick search of the mailing list archives and got wind that there has been limited success using this card with the Lance drivers (lnc). So, I booted the machine with the boot floppy and saw the following message: pci0:11: AND, device=0x2000, class=network (ethernet) int a irq 11 [no driver assigned] Grumble. It sees the hardware, but refuses to bind the lnc driver to it. My roomate has the same identical laptop running Redhat v4.2 with no problems -- it identifies the card as "PCNET/PCI-II 79C970A at 0xfcc0, assigned irq 11". This card appears to be kinda screwy, as it's identified as both "PCI & ISA" ("choose yer favorite bus!"). In some messages I've pulled up from the mailing list I've seen reference to both a lnc0 and lnc1 device; however, one can only configure lnc0 from from the Visual Configuration tool. So, my question is: has anyone had any sucess with this particular card and or laptop? I'd love to provide all the information I can if it'd help more, or please let me know if it's a lost cause. :) I'm not a hardware hacker but would be glad to help in anyway I can -- this is a very nice laptop otherwise. Ted Faber has a patch that makes it work on his Hitachi system; I've been talking to him just recently about this in order to see if we can't make use of it. What we *really* need is for someone to come forward and write a new driver for the PCNET devices, because our current driver really isn't up to snuff. -- \\ Sometimes you're ahead, \\ Mike Smith \\ sometimes you're behind. \\ mike@smith.net.au \\ The race is long, and in the \\ msmith@freebsd.org \\ end it's only with yourself. \\ msmith@cdrom.com To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-mobile" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-mobile Tue Jun 30 14:53:26 1998 Return-Path: Received: (from majordom@localhost) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) id OAA11970 for freebsd-mobile-outgoing; Tue, 30 Jun 1998 14:53:26 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from owner-freebsd-mobile@FreeBSD.ORG) Received: from aphrodite.harbor.ab.ca (aphrodite.harbor.ab.ca [198.161.82.75]) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) with ESMTP id OAA11961 for ; Tue, 30 Jun 1998 14:53:20 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from mathezer@harbor.ab.ca) Received: from gemini100.harbor.ab.ca by aphrodite.harbor.ab.ca with SMTP (Microsoft Exchange Internet Mail Service Version 5.0.1458.49) id NQ2Z98BS; Tue, 30 Jun 1998 15:52:27 -0600 Date: Tue, 30 Jun 1998 15:52:28 -0600 (MDT) From: Stephen Mathezer X-Sender: mathezer@gemini To: freebsd-mobile@FreeBSD.ORG Subject: Megahertz XJEM3288 with 2.2.6 Message-ID: MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: TEXT/PLAIN; charset=US-ASCII Content-Transfer-Encoding: 8bit X-MIME-Autoconverted: from QUOTED-PRINTABLE to 8bit by hub.freebsd.org id OAA11965 Sender: owner-freebsd-mobile@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk X-Loop: FreeBSD.org Hi, I've been using FreeBSD for ages but this is the first time I have tried to get pccard stuff working. I just knew my name would come up here. I should be able to get time to make the changes Mike and I discussed this week, and get some real code to him, as opposed to my (functional) hack job. Steve, if you want to try a patch, you can try the one attached. It's relative to /sys. (It's also based on 2.2.4?-RELEASE, but has applied flawlessly to 2.2.6-RELEASE). If you need help applying it or have problems, let me know. Oh, and tell me if it works. I'd like to know that it works on machines other than my MX-133. *** pci/if_lnc_p.c.orig Fri Apr 4 08:48:12 1997 --- pci/if_lnc_p.c Sun Aug 3 00:10:24 1997 *************** *** 75,81 **** unsigned iobase; void *lnc; /* device specific data for interrupt handler ... */ ! iobase = pci_conf_read(config_id, PCI_MAP_REG_START) & ~PCI_MAP_IO; lnc = lnc_attach_ne2100_pci(unit, iobase); if (!lnc) --- 75,86 ---- unsigned iobase; void *lnc; /* device specific data for interrupt handler ... */ ! /* pci_map_port correctly initializes bridge chips -- tvf */ ! ! if ( !pci_map_port(config_id,PCI_MAP_REG_START,(u_short *)&iobase) ) ! printf("lnc%d: pci_port_map_attach failed?!\n",unit); ! else ! printf("lnc%d: pci port mapped to %x\n",unit,iobase); lnc = lnc_attach_ne2100_pci(unit, iobase); if (!lnc) *** i386/isa/if_lnc.h.orig Tue Sep 10 01:21:57 1996 --- i386/isa/if_lnc.h Sat Aug 2 23:45:02 1997 *************** *** 69,74 **** --- 69,75 ---- #define Am79C961 0x2260 #define Am79C965 0x2430 #define Am79C970 0x0242 + #define HITACHI_Am79C970 0x2621 /* Board types */ #define UNKNOWN 0 *** i386/isa/if_lnc.c.orig Tue Apr 8 03:59:30 1997 --- i386/isa/if_lnc.c Sun Aug 3 14:59:06 1997 *************** *** 1068,1073 **** --- 1068,1075 ---- * do NOT try to ISA attach the PCI version */ return (0); + case HITACHI_Am79C970: + return (PCnet_PCI); default: break; } *************** *** 1197,1203 **** if (sc) { bzero (sc, sizeof *sc); ! if ((ne2100_probe(sc, iobase) == 0) || (lnc_attach_sc(sc, unit) == 0)) { free(sc, M_DEVBUF); sc = NULL; --- 1199,1209 ---- if (sc) { bzero (sc, sizeof *sc); ! #ifdef HITACHI_MX ! if ((ne2100_probe(sc, iobase) == NE2100_IOSIZE) ! #else ! if ((ne2100_probe(sc, iobase) == 0) ! #endif || (lnc_attach_sc(sc, unit) == 0)) { free(sc, M_DEVBUF); sc = NULL; To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-mobile" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-mobile Tue Jun 30 19:09:29 1998 Return-Path: Received: (from majordom@localhost) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) id TAA28385 for freebsd-mobile-outgoing; Tue, 30 Jun 1998 19:09:29 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from owner-freebsd-mobile@FreeBSD.ORG) Received: from cygnus.rush.net (root@cygnus.rush.net [209.45.245.133]) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) with ESMTP id TAA28313; Tue, 30 Jun 1998 19:08:54 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from lynch@rush.net) Received: from localhost (lynch@localhost) by cygnus.rush.net (8.8.7/8.8.7) with SMTP id WAA19767; Tue, 30 Jun 1998 22:43:39 -0500 (EST) Date: Tue, 30 Jun 1998 22:43:37 -0500 (EST) From: P Lynch To: "Steve Bernacki Jr." cc: freebsd-questions@FreeBSD.ORG, freebsd-mobile@FreeBSD.ORG Subject: Re: Any Success w/ Hitachi VisionBook PRO In-Reply-To: Message-ID: MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: TEXT/PLAIN; charset=US-ASCII Sender: owner-freebsd-mobile@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk X-Loop: FreeBSD.org If its a PCMCIA card, you might wanna try FreeBSD-PAO, available on www.jp.freebsd.org. thats what I use on my laptop ___________________________________________________________________________ Pat Lynch lynch@rush.net Systems Administrator Rush Networking ___________________________________________________________________________ On Tue, 30 Jun 1998, Steve Bernacki Jr. wrote: > Hi everyone, > > I received a Hitachi VisionBook PRO from my employer yesterday. I mostly got this to work. sio0 is at IRQ 4 card0 uses IRQ 3 So, I changed sio1 to be irq11 and then used config 0x21 "sio1" 11 The card is found and attached etc. I got ppp to work so everything seems to work fine EXCEPT that if I pull the card out, I get a constant beep from the machine and it hangs. Is there anything special I have to do for removing the card? By the way, you say that sio2 is 3e8 and that sio1 is 2f8 and that 0x21 corresponds to sio1. How did you get this information from the dumcis? I assume Tuple #5-7 contain config info. Did you just look and see that the Config index is 0x21 in tuple 5 and the block start is 2f8 and since 2f8 is usually sio1 you now know that 0x21 is for sio1. Is that sort of right.
