We've been using Libretto's for this exact purpose right now, and it works well. Remember to get the new 100C model, which has 2 PCMCIA slots so you can have one for the WaveLan and the other for a PCMCAI camera. Note, we're not doing this under FreeBSD at this point. :( Nate To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-mobile" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-mobile Tue Sep 29 23:22:45 1998 Return-Path: Received: (from majordom@localhost) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) id XAA01952 for freebsd-mobile-outgoing; Tue, 29 Sep 1998 23:22:45 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from owner-freebsd-mobile@FreeBSD.ORG) Received: from dtag-gate.vector-informatik.de (dtag-gate.vector-informatik.de [195.243.101.211]) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) with ESMTP id XAA01921 for ; Tue, 29 Sep 1998 23:22:35 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from eisele@vector-informatik.de) Received: (from nobody@localhost) by dtag-gate.vector-informatik.de (8.8.7/8.8.8) id IAA28286; Wed, 30 Sep 1998 08:22:16 +0200 (CEST) Message-Id: <199809300622.IAA28286@dtag-gate.vector-informatik.de> Received: from novell1.vector-informatik.de(172.16.0.201) via SMTP by gateway.vector-informatik.de, id smtpdR28284; Wed Sep 30 08:22:12 1998 Received: from VECTOR_01/SpoolDir by novell1.vector-informatik.de (Mercury 1.43); 30 Sep 98 08:21:54 +0200 Received: from SpoolDir by VECTOR_01 (Mercury 1.43); 30 Sep 98 08:21:34 +0200 From: "Michael Eisele" Organization: Vector Informatik GmbH To: Nate Williams Date: Wed, 30 Sep 1998 08:21:33 CET MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-type: text/plain; charset=US-ASCII Content-transfer-encoding: 7BIT Subject: Re: pccard driver question Reply-to: eisele@vector-informatik.de CC: freebsd-mobile@FreeBSD.ORG In-reply-to: <199809291626.KAA23629@mt.sri.com> References: <199809290835.KAA10140@dtag-gate.vector-informatik.de> X-mailer: Pegasus Mail for Win32 (v3.01b) Sender: owner-freebsd-mobile@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk X-Loop: FreeBSD.org > [ moved to -mobile ] > > > could anyone please tell me why the function pccard_remove_driver > > in pccard.c is deactivated in 2.2.7 ? > > Because no-one called in the standard distribution, hence the name > 'unused'. I have played around with the pccardd and have done some small modifications: I have introduced a new keword 'preconfig' for pccard.conf witch make it possible to execute a command before the driver is configured. So it is possible to execute a modload command when the card is inserted and a modunload when the card is removed. What do think about it ? For my pccard driver it works fine. The only thread I > found was the one regarding your memory problems in July. Were you > able to solve this, and if so -- do you find the 600 to be a suitable > platform for FreeBSD ? I really like the ThinkPad 600, and I find quite suitable. The solution for the memory problem is this, remove the SIMM, recompile the kernel with the appropriate "MAXMEM=xxx" option (don't forget the quotes). This should be set to the number that you see on the opening screen when you boot up the machine when you have the SIMM installed. After you install the kernel, shutdown the machine, install the SIMM, and reboot, and you will have all the memory. I can't get a few things to work, such as the WaveModem (I have seen a lot of "this is completely hopeless" messages on this topic), and the built-in sound card (I have to be able to play my mp3 and get sound in enlightenment). I still only have PAO-2.2.6 installed on it, so that may be some of my problem. A last note, the laptop does use the NeoMagic chip set. I ended up spending the money for AccerleratedX (I have used it before, and it is fairly nice), but this going to change with the next release of Xfree86. > Do the APM work from within FreeBSD? Actually, I have played around with this a little, but I really haven't got it to work right. I don't think I have played around with it enough to say it doesn't work, and it may be fixed in 2.2.7. The PAO/2.2.7 sysinstall complains about "unsupported card" after it has correctly noticed that something is stuck into slot0. On the installed system, the problem is similar: First the card doesn't get recognized by pccardd, since the vendor id string doesn't match anything in pccard.conf. In pccard.conf.sample, there is an entry for the ENET-A type - we copied it over and modified the vendor- and card id (ENET-B reports "PCMCIA" "Ethernet Card") and hoped that the card would work somehow. However, pccardd always complains with "resource allocation failed" when the card is inserted (or pccardd started) and the ed0 driver is not being attached. My question is whether the ENET-B is so different from the ENET-A that it is not supported by the driver, or if somebody has it running, or if support for it could possibly be hacked together somehow? - mkb To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-mobile" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-mobile Thu Oct 1 19:47:35 1998 Return-Path: Received: (from majordom@localhost) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) id TAA16543 for freebsd-mobile-outgoing; Thu, 1 Oct 1998 19:47:35 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from owner-freebsd-mobile@FreeBSD.ORG) Received: from dingo.cdrom.com (dingo.cdrom.com [204.216.28.145]) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) with ESMTP id TAA16538 for ; Thu, 1 Oct 1998 19:47:33 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from mike@dingo.cdrom.com) Received: from dingo.cdrom.com (localhost.cdrom.com [127.0.0.1]) by dingo.cdrom.com (8.9.1/8.8.8) with ESMTP id TAA03075; Thu, 1 Oct 1998 19:52:44 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from mike@dingo.cdrom.com) Message-Id: <199810020252.TAA03075@dingo.cdrom.com> X-Mailer: exmh version 2.0.2 2/24/98 To: Matthias Buelow cc: freebsd-mobile@FreeBSD.ORG, turin@luzifer.mayn.de Subject: Re: Compex Linkport ENET-B on 2.2.7/PAO In-reply-to: Your message of "Fri, 02 Oct 1998 02:06:45 +0200." <199810020006.CAA01160@altair.mayn.de> Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Date: Thu, 01 Oct 1998 19:52:43 -0700 From: Mike Smith Sender: owner-freebsd-mobile@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk X-Loop: FreeBSD.org -- \\ Sometimes you're ahead, \\ Mike Smith \\ sometimes you're behind. \\ mike@smith.net.au \\ The race is long, and in the \\ msmith@freebsd.org \\ end it's only with yourself. \\ msmith@cdrom.com To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-mobile" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-mobile Thu Oct 1 19:49:17 1998 Return-Path: Received: (from majordom@localhost) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) id TAA16725 for freebsd-mobile-outgoing; Thu, 1 Oct 1998 19:49:17 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from owner-freebsd-mobile@FreeBSD.ORG) Received: from dingo.cdrom.com (dingo.cdrom.com [204.216.28.145]) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) with ESMTP id TAA16718 for ; Thu, 1 Oct 1998 19:49:16 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from mike@dingo.cdrom.com) Received: from dingo.cdrom.com (localhost.cdrom.com [127.0.0.1]) by dingo.cdrom.com (8.9.1/8.8.8) with ESMTP id TAA03091; Thu, 1 Oct 1998 19:54:28 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from mike@dingo.cdrom.com) Message-Id: <199810020254.TAA03091@dingo.cdrom.com> X-Mailer: exmh version 2.0.2 2/24/98 To: Matthias Buelow cc: freebsd-mobile@FreeBSD.ORG, turin@luzifer.mayn.de Subject: Re: Compex Linkport ENET-B on 2.2.7/PAO In-reply-to: Your message of "Fri, 02 Oct 1998 02:06:45 +0200." <199810020006.CAA01160@altair.mayn.de> Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Date: Thu, 01 Oct 1998 19:54:28 -0700 From: Mike Smith Sender: owner-freebsd-mobile@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk X-Loop: FreeBSD.org > Hi folks, > > tonight a friend and I have been trying to get a ReadyLINK > Compex Linkport ENET-B ethernet pccard working on a 2.2.7 system > with and without PAO, to no avail. > > The PAO/2.2.7 sysinstall complains about "unsupported card" after > it has correctly noticed that something is stuck into slot0. > > On the installed system, the problem is similar: > > First the card doesn't get recognized by pccardd, since the > vendor id string doesn't match anything in pccard.conf. > > In pccard.conf.sample, there is an entry for the ENET-A type - > we copied it over and modified the vendor- and card id (ENET-B > reports "PCMCIA" "Ethernet Card") and hoped that the card would > work somehow. Its a plain vanilla system with 96M of memory, and I > have RedHat 5.1 running without any problems. There is a problem with the way FreeBSD detechs memory on the ThinkPad 600. I was able to get it to work in the following manner: Install FreeBSD with just the built-in memory (32 Meg). Rebuild the kernel with OPTION "MAXMEM=xxx" where xxx is the amount of memory you will install (use the number that show up when the machine is booting with all the memory). Install the new kernel, shut the box down, install the memory and boot. It worked for me, though your milage may vary. > I'm new to BSD and have been spoiled by the easy installation of RH. It is a funky DSP modem that is actually programmed by the Winblow driver. There isn't support for it under FreeBSD, yet (I can dream, can't I)... I hope this helps. > > Thanks in advance. The problem is actually with the way that the TP600 responds to the memory probe technique that FreeBSD uses, but the results are the same. > I was able to get it to work in the following manner: > > Install FreeBSD with just the built-in memory (32 Meg). > > Rebuild the kernel with OPTION "MAXMEM=xxx" where xxx is > the amount of memory you will install (use the number that > show up when the machine is booting with all the memory). > > Install the new kernel, shut the box down, install the memory > and boot. I would be very interested to hear from anyone that is running -current on one of these systems; we have an improved memory-sizing algorithm available there which it would be desirable to test. -- \\ Sometimes you're ahead, \\ Mike Smith \\ sometimes you're behind. \\ mike@smith.net.au \\ The race is long, and in the \\ msmith@freebsd.org \\ end it's only with yourself. \\ msmith@cdrom.com To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-mobile" in the body of the message
