That's what I'm seeing now. The interface comes up with "ifconfig zp0 inet 198.178.173.1 link0 netmask 255.255.255.0" and pings localhost, but gives "Sendto: Host is down" when pinging any other host, including my default route(an ISDN modem). I'm not sure what a "Windows manager" is...(being a Win95 user) but I guess its something important that you need. I learned that KDE is the best window manager out there...and after looking through their webpage i saw that beta4 is available...however when I try to install it from the ports collection that came with FreeBSD, it installed beta3.1 or something. It downloaded everything from the first site it tried...then began compiling, or installing, and then crashed... I heard that downloading beta 3.1 from kde's site is a bad thing (something i read from freebsd-questions) So...my question is... how do I get freebsd to install beta 4? Do I have to download it myself in a dos partition... then how do i install it. will it harm anything that beta3 is half installed? Ok..another question...is it possible to change your partition sizes? I want to allocate more space to /usr...and take it away from /var. Can you do that? how bout joining another slice from another drive to /usr ? thanks Loren To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-newbies" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-newbies Mon Jun 1 06:28:28 1998 Return-Path: Received: (from majordom@localhost) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) id GAA04754 for freebsd-newbies-outgoing; Mon, 1 Jun 1998 06:28:28 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from owner-freebsd-newbies@FreeBSD.ORG) Received: from hermes.dciem.dnd.ca (0@hermes.dciem.dnd.ca [131.136.64.3]) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) with SMTP id GAA04742; Mon, 1 Jun 1998 06:28:15 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from tyeung@dciem.dnd.ca) Received: from pcsim23 (pcsim23.dciem.dnd.ca) by hermes.dciem.dnd.ca (4.1/SMI-4.1) for freebsd-newbies@FreeBSD.ORG; id AA27446; Mon, 1 Jun 98 09:28:13 EDT Message-Id: <9806011328.AA27446@hermes.dciem.dnd.ca> From: "Tim Yeung" To: freebsd-questions@FreeBSD.ORG, freebsd-newbies@FreeBSD.ORG Date: Mon, 1 Jun 1998 09:27:26 -0500 Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=US-ASCII Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7BIT Subject: symbolic link for ftp anonymous user Sender: owner-freebsd-newbies@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk X-Loop: FreeBSD.org Hi there Running FreeBSD 2.2.5 on a Pentium 133 system. How to fix it. Make sure the user "ftp" has read/execute access to this directory and at least read access to any files that you want to be available via anonymous FTP. I'm not aware of your exact situation, but: "chmod 555 /path/to/share/dir" should do the trick. You don't mention what model of DataFlex modem you are using, so I am going to assume that it is a "V34 VoiceSurfer" (since this was the only V.34 modem listed at the DataFlex site) I can't be sure but I believe it may be based on the PCTel chipset, which may not be compatible with anything other than Windows (95 and 3.x - usually not NT). From the sounds of your problems with NT, this may very well be the problem. To find out if this is a PCTel Chipset, start up Windows 95, go into Hyperterminal, and issue the following command to the modem: ati3 If it is a PCTel chipset, you will see the following response: PCtel 3.5.110S PCtel 3.5202S or something similar. The reason I suspect this is a PCTel chipset is from the following line I found in the Support Manual on the DataFLex website. (http://http://www.dataflex.co.uk/tech.html): "PLEASE NOTE: This modem requires a PC system with an Intel Pentium Processor running at 90MHz or higher." The PCTel modems are some of the only "HSP" (Host Signal Processing) modems out there. These modems use the Host PC's CPU to process the data stream rather than an onboard chip to handle it. The other thing about these modems is that they are *software* driven (ie. they will work in Windows with the appropriate drivers installed, but not in DOS) This is similar to the notorious WinModems out there that cause no end of grief to dialup ISP Tech Support guys. A good (astounding, actually) site which explains all about HSP, RPI, PCTel etc. is the Zoltrix modem support page. They too use the PCTel chipset in their modems, and while I don't care for their products, their support page is excellent. The URL is: http://www.zoltrix.com/techsupp.htm They offer this in their FAQ: > Can I use my modem with Operating systems other than Windows 95? > Yes! The HSP modem currently works in Win95. It also works in Win 3.1x > for users of true INTEL PENTIUM CPU's. Click here to download the Win > 3.1x driver. The chipset maker (PCtel) claims that they may support > other Operating Systems in the future. Currently they claim they will > release a version of a Windows NT driver soon. > > PCtel currently has no plans to run on the DOS operating system. They > claim to need a more powerful OS for our drivers to multitask with other > programs. Also, as a side note, 28.8kbps modems use the "v.34" standard, while 33.6kbps modems use "v.34+". The ati3 command should tell you which standard you are using. So if your modem has the PCTel Chipset, it doesn't look likely that it will work with FreeBSD or any other x86-based Unix. At least until someone from the development team comes up with a driver for it. ===================== Quote(c) 1997 Martin Poulin ===================== I do not know whether I was then a man dreaming I was a butterfly, or whether I am now a butterfly dreaming I am a man. - Chuang Tzu To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-newbies" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-newbies Mon Jun 1 18:58:28 1998 Return-Path: Received: (from majordom@localhost) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) id SAA06558 for freebsd-newbies-outgoing; Mon, 1 Jun 1998 18:58:28 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from owner-freebsd-newbies@FreeBSD.ORG) Received: from shell.futuresouth.com (shell.futuresouth.com [198.78.58.18]) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) with ESMTP id SAA06404; Mon, 1 Jun 1998 18:57:35 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from fullermd@futuresouth.com) Received: from localhost (fullermd@localhost) by shell.futuresouth.com (8.8.8/8.8.8) with SMTP id UAA02918; Mon, 1 Jun 1998 20:57:11 -0500 (CDT) Date: Mon, 1 Jun 1998 20:57:11 -0500 (CDT) From: "Matthew D. If your problems aren't solved there, ask freebsd-questions@freebsd.org for help. FreeBSD-Newbies can't answer questions about how to use FreeBSD. The people who help newbies with questions are already working hard for us in freebsd-questions. We also watch -questions waiting for answers :-) Here we talk about the aspects of being newbies that don't involve support questions, because we can't chat over there. For example, a lot of newbies are interested in documentation, what's good, where to find it, and how to learn from it. And sometimes we just want to let off steam. I thought I specified that I wanted to run X during the installation (2.2.6 release), but I am unable to run XF86Setup or xf86config. I read the documentation from xfree86.org and the X Window System section of the FAQ, but it is no help to me at this point since I can't even run the setup program. It's very likely that I messed up during the installation on my system. (I chose a custom installation and selected what I thought were the appropriate X components) Would I be better starting over from scratch and selecting one of the pre-built X Window installations instead? I don't have too much invested in my system right now, so it won't be too much of a loss to start over. If someone can point me in the right direction, it would be greatly appreciated. Every time I go through another installation, I like this product more and more. I did run into a problem however. I have a Hercules Stingray 128/3D card, so I was using the unsupported XSuSE X Windows driver for it. Using that driver seemed to break the mouse driver when I started using 2.2.6. As with any really good problem, it worked in 2.2.5. I went to XFree86's web page to see if there was any word on this problem, and to my amazement, I read that the XSuSE_AT3D driver had been incorporated into XFree86's own SVGA driver with the 3.3.2 release! I didn't need the specialized driver; the necessary files were already on the CD! And by the way, I still don't know the difference between xf86config and xf98config, but XF86Setup blows them both away. If you haven't seen it, check it out. After learning that and making the appropriate changes, everything worked fine. (This is the reason why I think it's good to get the latest possible distributions on the CD.) Then I experimented with some window managers that make your screen look like everything from an Amiga to a Windows 95 box to a Motif box. If I have one lingering criticism of FreeBSD's installation, it's the choice to use twm as the default window manager. Ugh! Trust me people, change your xinitrc as soon as you've got the graphics up and running. You won't be disappointed. My next step is to try to get xdm working so I can have a graphical login. Then I may set up a screensaver. My goal is to get enough of a system up so I can start porting some X Windows / Motif code. Wish me luck! That's an area that could do with more documentation, especially from a newbies perspective. Documentation and support is mostly supplied by the people who provide the X Window System that is bundled with FreeBSD. But one thing that would have helped me is an overview of the procedure. I'll have a go: The first steps are basically: install X, make sure your path includes X (you'll probably see how to change it if you edit your ~/.profile and log in again), run xf86config as root (very carefully! a wrong answer can fry your monitor so run it again if you made a mistake), and then as a humble user type 'startx' and see if it works. Use Ctrl-Alt-Backspace to get out of X if you can't see another way. If the screen seems happy, use Ctrl-Alt-+ (that's the plus on the numeric keypad) a few times slowly to see how easy it is to cycle through the available resolutions. Next: you need to install and configure a 'window manager' to make it work nicely. Out of the box it has an old plain window manager called twm but you're sure to want something better. The one called fvwm2 is good to start with (install from the FreeBSD packages collection) and experiment with other ones after the basics are a bit more familiar. Hint: click on the background with different mouse buttons to get menus, including one that'll let you exit gracefully. By now you'll be interested in colour depth as well as resolution, so try changing to something like 'startx -- -bpp 16' to get more colours. Would it help much to have a brief summary like this in the Handbook or FAQ? Raise enough hands and it'll happen. There's a couple of good chapters on setting up X in Greg Lehey's book The Complete FreeBSD, and that's the only place you'll find every detail from installing to making X shine. Get this book if you can. Our Newbies Resources web page (http://www.freebsd.org/newbies.html) has just had a little section on X added. It gets updated every couple of weeks, mostly by *guessing* what info newbies need to find (hint). Please post any feedback on that page to this mailing list. For problems and specific questions, ask freebsd-questions@freebsd.org. There's another web page at http://www.welearn.com.au/freebsd/newbies that explains how to deal with problems that don't solve themselves. > I don't have too much invested in my system right now, so it won't be > too much of a loss to start over. Aaaarrggghh! That's what I said too :-( I reinstalled about six times in the first week trying to get things right. WRONG! Once it's installed and booting you're fine. Even the silliest goofs can be fixed from there, with a little help from the FAQ, Handbook, man pages if you're desperate, and freebsd-questions to solve any nagging mysteries that remain. If you're totally new at everything, remember that you'll be learning about several distinct subjects at once: UNIX commands; X; how to use particular applications; running FreeBSD. Try to distinguish between these areas of knowledge from the start. Most of the help you'll get from FreeBSD people (e.g. in freebsd-questions) is on FreeBSD itself, though they'll stray to other areas a little bit to help out. On the other hand, here as newbies we can discuss the process we've been through to learn FreeBSD and all of the other things we've needed to know about. We all have different backgrounds and different learning styles. Sharing our experiences is valuable, even when our experiences are very different. Please let us know what helps you most, in case it helps us too. -- Regards, -*Sue*- To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-newbies" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-newbies Fri Jun 5 17:52:44 1998 Return-Path: Received: (from majordom@localhost) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) id RAA23730 for freebsd-newbies-outgoing; Fri, 5 Jun 1998 17:52:44 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from owner-freebsd-newbies@FreeBSD.ORG) Received: from send1e.yahoomail.com (send1e.yahoomail.com [205.180.60.64]) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) with SMTP id RAA23698 for ; Fri, 5 Jun 1998 17:52:38 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from simon_v_mendoza@yahoo.com) Message-ID: <19980606005220.18750.rocketmail@send1e.yahoomail.com> Received: from [200.44.4.31] by send1e; Fri, 05 Jun 1998 17:52:20 PDT Date: Fri, 5 Jun 1998 17:52:20 -0700 (PDT) From: simon mendoza Subject: Re: Some kind of language To: David Wolfskill Cc: newbies@FreeBSD.ORG MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Sender: owner-freebsd-newbies@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk X-Loop: FreeBSD.org ---David Wolfskill wrote: > > I don't think that was appropriate for the list. > > david > -- All right, sorry if this message offended anyone, It just amuses me how beings so developed as ourselves, who can get enough abstraction out of our thoughts as to be able to design and interpret machine languages and coding, can also be so primitive and instinctive. It is also available at http://www.welearn.com.au/freebsd/newbies/ FreeBSD-Newbies is a discussion forum for newbies. We cover any of the activities of newbies that are not already dealt with elsewhere. Examples include helping each other to learn more on our own, finding and using resources, problem solving techniques, how to seek help elsewhere, how to use mailing lists and which lists to use, general chat, making mistakes, boasting, sharing ideas, stories, moral (but not technical) support, and taking an active part in the FreeBSD community. We take our problems and support questions to freebsd-questions, and use freebsd-newbies to meet others who are doing the same things that we do as newbies. One of the things we do together is learn more effective ways to find help when we need it. Here are some suggestions: When something doesn't work the way you expect 1. First look at the errata for your release of FreeBSD at http://www.FreeBSD.ORG/releases/ for the latest information and security advisories. 2. Search the Handbook, FAQ, and mail archives at http://www.FreeBSD.ORG/search.html 3. If you still have a question or problem, collect the output of `uname -a' and of any relevant program(s) and email your question to FreeBSD-questions@FreeBSD.ORG. Mailing lists When you have a problem that you can't solve by yourself, there's only one support mailing list and that's FreeBSD-questions@FreeBSD.ORG. You don't have to actually join freebsd-questions before asking a question there. Replies to your question will normally be sent to you personally as well as to the list. Just make sure you have read and followed the guidelines for posting, because you might find them different to what you're used to. If you do subscribe to freebsd-questions you'll have the advantage of seeing all of the recent questions and their answers. Before you post to FreeBSD-questions, please read the guidelines at http://www.lemis.com/questions.html Many of the people who answer FreeBSD-questions are very knowledgeable, but they get frustrated when they get questions which are difficult to understand. http://www.lemis.com/email.html is worth reading too. If you're not sure that you can follow these guidelines, come back and ask the other newbies for help on how to post an effective question to the support mailing list. Maybe your question has been asked before. If you search the mailing list archives at http://www.freebsd.org/search.html first you might get the answer right away. It's always worth trying. Other mailing lists (http://www.freebsd.org/handbook/handbook344.html) cover specialised areas and many are more developer-oriented. You'll need to read their charters carefully before participating, but it's probably a good idea to ask on either -newbies or -questions for advice about where to post a more specialised question. Manuals You'll always be expected show that you have made some effort to use the available documentation before asking for help. That's not always as easy as it sounds! If you know what documentation you need but can't locate it, send a brief query to FreeBSD-questions. If you don't know what you need, always have trouble finding it, or can't make any sense of it when you do, ask some patient newbies to steer you in the right direction. Anyone interested in writing or reviewing documentation for FreeBSD is encouraged to join the FreeBSD Documentation Project. Details are at http://www.freebsd.org/docproj.html Other resources [Updated! New links to info on ppp and the X Window System] A resource list is available at http://www.freebsd.org/newbies.html to help new and inexperienced FreeBSD users to find relevant information quickly. It includes books, on line documents and tutorials, and links to web pages that other newbies have found useful for learning. If you have a suggestion for good material to be included, please write to freebsd-newbies and tell us about it. But I have seen people asking questions here! It is quite common for people to send the wrong kind of post to a mailing list. Because we're newbies it'll certainly happen here from time to time. The best thing to do if you see a message that doesn't belong on a list is to ignore it. There's always someone around whose job it is to sort these problems out privately. The posts to the lists go straight through, whatever their content. It is going to be confusing for a little while because we're all newbies so we all make mistakes. That's OK. One thing we're going to see a fair bit is people posting questions, believing they're doing the right thing by posting here as newbies, not realising how it works. If someone answers those questions the situation will snowball. There's nothing wrong with helping someone to redirect their question to freebsd-questions, but please do so gently. There's nothing wrong with the occasional mistake either. So all questions, requests for help, etc still go to freebsd-questions as usual. Ours is more of a discussion group, a place where newbies can relax with other newbies and focus more on our successes than on our temporary imperfection. We can talk about things here that are not allowed on freebsd-questions. We're also a bit freer to make the mistakes that we need to make in order to learn. _________________________________________________________________ To Subscribe to FreeBSD-Newbies: Send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "subscribe freebsd-newbies" in the body of the message. I liked it very much and simon: restart anytime you have other jokes. Its a (so boring) mailing list.
