Does that means your plan is based on "repository copy", not on "importing new files"? As I said before, I don't like losing histories of their files. IMHO, correct method of these works is: (1) Copy directories in repository. (2) Operating tags in their files. (add "old" prefix to tags in copied files) (3) "cvs remove"ing old directory. (so they've gone into Attic) This works well old and -current environment for translation. Does your plan include these works? # Sorry if you already mentioned about this. That's got + all the latest stuff, right? + + +

4.0 is the next major release of FreeBSD. For now, and for a + while, all -stable releases of FreeBSD will be in the 3.x + line. These are minor releases, which do not introduce big + changes and we try our best to avoid breaking compatibility + backward compatibility (binary, file formats, etc). + +

Meanwhile, our fearless developers are cooking the 4.0 + version. This branch is known as 4.0-current, or just -current + (since when 4.0 becomes stable, the current branch will become + 5.0-current). + +

Our developers are fearless because a -current system is + something in development, and, thus, subject to all sort of + bugs, which can wipe out your disks, burn your monitor, erase + your BIOS, overheat your CPU(s), spit out your PCI cards, send + the fans flying (sometimes throwing stuff at them first), make + international phone calls to phone sex services, print + pornography until your printer runs out of paper/toner (sorry, + no such luck... it's just the Stark report), send insulting + faxes to your boss, cheat on the mob and blame you for it, + attract attention for the gentle I.R.S. personel, blow your + house fuses, open the gas and then set your house on fire, make + your girlfriend break up with you (or your wife cheat on you), + and bomb Yugoslavia. This last one we are trying to debug, + though [NOTE: at the time of this writing, we have reports that + this bug has been fixed]. + +

Because of the above, we advise against using -current. If + you so insist, the following rules must be obeyed: + + + Read cvs-all. No, I'm not kidding. I mean it. + + Read freebsd-current. Yeah, that one too. + + If something fails, it's probably because you missed a + message on cvs-all or freebsd-current. + + If that's not the case, it's probably a temporary + bug. Cvsup again after the appropriate time (minimum of one + hour, though one full day is not unreasonable). + + If it still crashes *at the same location*, then it's + probably your fault. Junk your customized settings, and try to + reproduce it with a vanilla system. + + If you can reproduce it even with a vanilla system, then + you might actually have stumbled on a bug. Congratulations! + Find out what the bug is, and send us the patches. + + If you are not capable of the above, you might just keep + quiet and wait until someone fixes it. See steps 1 and 2 for + how do you know someone fixed it. + + On the other hand, you might help track down the + bug. See the handbook on getting crash dumps, kernel traces, + and such stuff. + + If you loose all data on your hard disks because of a + bug, that's one of the risks of running -current. Either you + can deal with that, or you shouldn't be running + -current. + + +

These rules, though written tongue-in-cheek, are for + real. FreeBSD 4.0-current is If you can live with that, and think you have any compelling + reason to run -current, read the handbook for further + instructions. + + +

Sorry if this seems too harsh, but many people are just not + used to the concept of a development tree available publicly, + and think of it as the "latest version". OK, that's fine with me. The current requirement for the teTeX flavour is more hystorical accident than anything else. It works pretty much out of the box, which was an important requirement, without requiring the user (or the port maintainer, which would probably have ended up being me) having to go out and fetch all the additional packages for TeX that teTeX comes bundled with. A 'lite' TeX installation that lets FDP contributors build PS and PDF versions of the docs without needing the full install of teTeX would be a useful option to have. Yes, definitely. All submissions are very welcome. The standard drill of using send-pr(1) to submit them apply. Read the FDP primer for hints on style, and your submission will be committed much faster if (a) It's already in DocBook SGML format (b) The formatting of the source matches the formatting used through out the rest of the Handbook. Otherwise I'll have to run it through the txt2docbook filter, and then make sure it's formatted nicely, then I'll commit it. They're not 'default' in the sense that they ship with DocBook, but they are the most complete set in existence, and since the output is (for most people) 'good enough', no one bothers to customise the output. But I'm > interested in your results. > > N > -- Well, I have a lot to do, don't I. Downloaded Jade, bookmarked a few SGML/DSSL sites, and took the day off. I did tinker with style sheets a while back and threw a page up - it is sad but still there, http://charm.net/~treecat/ , till I blank it. WP8: I am working on it. No useful notes so far, however, I think something useful will come out of the exercise. Anyway, I am using win95 right now because my ISP does not 'do' remote X-term, so, until I get the new drive I will FTP every thing to my BSDI (csh) acnt. so I can get something done. FreeBSD back up (gigabytes!) by next Friday??? Back to WP8. The nature of the wordprocessor is to try to protect the user from themselves. This results in a odd (to me) series of edit windows instead if just text editing like in emacs or pico (vi == ick). The good news is, WP8 allows text input if one wants to. It also validates every line so the user cannot input bad codes by mistake. The user can keep any bad SGML but it will not validate. It also enforces the rules. I guess what I mean is, , will be flagged as an error in the code tree that is displayed to the left of the text source. The text source is displayed as a normal WP style window. Well, that was not as clear as I wanted, but I do not know enough right now to really use the Code in a meaningful way. Later descriptions should be better. Maybe a step-by-step because it is so different. If I am lucky I can run the output through sgml to html and have a new page. Will see. Date: Mon, 12 Jul 1999 17:09:01 +0200 Hi John, I think we were all very impressed with Daniel's little rant. However, do you really think that adding this _to_ _the_ _FAQ_ will actually reduce the number of times this question crops up on the hackers and current mailing lists? I don't think so. I think that the only value of having this in the FAQ is so that we can give people the snotty response "Read the FAQ" when they ask. Are you sure that this is a sound motivation for adding the entry to the FAQ? This is a genuine question, I'm not just stabbing at the idea. Ciao, Sheldon. Sorry, that must have passed me by. Yeah, as long as a consistent set of tags are used, I'm happy. That way other translation teams can use the same scheme. Maybe I'm weird, 'cause when I wanted to upgrade, I went straight to the handbook to find out how instead of just asking on -stable or -questions, so I tend to assume that if info is in the FAQ/handbook, people will hit that and not have to send a message to anyone. However, from my reading of the handbook, I did realize at the time what -current was and that I didn't need to run it, so I guess if someone is going to take the time to actually read the docs, they won't need the FAQ entry. So I guess no, it's not going to help. > I don't think so. I think that the only value of having this in the FAQ > is so that we can give people the snotty response "Read the FAQ" when > they ask. Given that we don't know whether it will or not, and since the submission would drop straight in to the FAQ with no changes required, isn't it a better idea just to put it in anyway? I've (I believe) calmed the fears of the Japanese translation team that the installation directory of doc/ja/ will be going away at any point in the near future, and we are hopefully in sufficient agreement that we can now progress to the actual implementation. In addition, I think (but would like confirmed) that John agrees that sliding or renaming the release* tags in doc/ja/ is now not necessary, because of how the tags are intended to be used. Because of the nature of the change, there will be a window of time during which the doc/ repository will fail to build successfully. This is unavoidable, as various changes will need to be made to the Makefiles after the files have been moved for everything to work. Obviously, if the repository fails to build it's much harder for people to continue working on the documentation, and anything that depends on the doc/ repository (for example, the web site builds) will also be affected. So I want to try and minimise this window as much as possible. For the specific case of the main web site, I'll update the "webbuild" script so that it uses an archive of the docs, rather than the live doc repository. This will allow the main FreeBSD web site to continue to build as normal, so there shouldn't be any problems there. However, there may be issues with mirrows of the FreeBSD web site, and I will be contacting the site mirror maintainers shortly to alert them of the problem. I estimate that fixing up doc/ after the repository copies have been completed will take me most of an evening. Generally, my free evenings in any given week are Monday -- Free all evening Tuesday -- Not free Wednesday -- Free all evening Thursday -- Free on all alternate Thursdays (next free is the 22nd) Friday -- Generally not free Saturday -- Generally not free Sunday -- Normally free Basically, this means any Monday, Wednesday, or Sunday evening are best for this to happen (from my point of view). John, how does this fit in with your schedule? Once we've decided a date for this to happen, I think the order of events is as follows; Action Responsible ------------------------------------------------------------------ Check out a complete copy of doc/ somewhere nik permanent on hub. Adjust "webbuild" to use this checked out copy, nik instead of trying to check out a fresh copy each time. I agree with Nik. There are a certain percentage of users who do actually read things like the FAQ, and misunderstand that "-current" means "new and cool." It would also be nice to have all of the reasons not to run -current collected in a faq entry, because *answering* questions on the lists with FAQ's is almost as good as preventing them from popping up. The one thing I would add is that world build problems in -current are often fixed by 'chflags -R noschg /usr/obj/* && rm -rf /usr/obj/* && make -DNOCLEAN world' (suitably formatted of course). The reason this often does the trick is that dependencies sometimes get stale after things are changed in the tree, so a virgin object directory fixes things up. After a boot sequence which can take anywhere from 30 seconds to 3 minutes, depending on your hardware, you should be presented with a menu of initial choices. OK so mine doesn't boot -- I get: /boot.config: -P Keyboard: no - BTX loader 1.00 BTX version is 1.01 (Bit confusing that, as I'm sure I was using a keyboard on the system a moment ago, under DOS, to generate the boot floppies!) Do people [dis]agree that a new section might be added here for ``Other servers'' or ``Other services''. These services could initially include offers of free FreeBSD related email addresses (user@ukug.uk.FreeBSD.org can be advertised immediately - anyone that wants one can have one... other user groups may want to do this too), and if anyone has a need for an account on a FreeBSD box (and wants to `further the cause'), shell accounts can be provided too. I'm sure other services & offers might also fit in here. I can start the section off with some offers from the UK user group - just to get the ball rolling :-) Suggestions / comments ? -- Brian Don't _EVER_ lose your sense of humour ! I think breaking it down by service rather than country is probably a good idea. I.e., The following user groups offer free webspace for FreeBSD related projects. .... The following user groups offer @xx.freebsd.org e-mail addresses for people working on FreeBSD related projects. .... The following user groups can offer a CVS repository to people working on FreeBSD related projects. .... and so on. Comments from the various members of the documentation team would be appreciated. In addition, if you look at the source, which is at doc/en/tutorials/docproj-primer/translations/chapter.sgml in the CVS tree, you'll see a reasonable example of how you should use DocBook to mark up a FAQ. The FAQ team might want to take a look at this to get ideas for how the FAQ itself will be converted from LinuxDoc to DocBook. Not that I know of. It's basically a case of following whatever style is in use around the area you're editing. I haven't written anything about it because (1) I don't actually know LinuxDoc, and (2) it's going to die a horrible flaming death just as soon as possible. The original plan was repository copy. Then John said this was too much work, so I said we'd repository copy the English docs, and re-import everything else. Then you guys said "No, we need the histories", and I wrote the script that does most of the repository copy work for us, so now, yes, I think we're repository copying :-) > This works well old and -current environment for translation. Run the command + + + How do I install a splash screen and where do I find them? + + +

Just prior to the release of FreeBSD 3.1, a new feature was + added to allow the display of "splash" screens during + the boot messages. The splash screens currently must be a 256 + color bitmap (*.BMP) or ZSoft PCX + (*.PCX) file. In addition, they must have a + resolution of 320x200 or less to work on standard VGA adapters. + If you compile VESA support into your kernel, then you can use + larger bitmaps up to 1024x768. Note that VESA support requires + the VM86 kernel option to be compiled into the + kernel. The actual VESA support can either be compiled directly + into the kernel with the VESA kernel config option + or by loading the VESA kld module during bootup.

    + +

To use a splash screen, you need to modify the startup files + that control the boot process for FreeBSD. The files for this + changed prior to the release of FreeBSD 3.2, so there are now + two ways of loading a splash screen: + + + FreeBSD 3.1 + +

The first step is to find a bitmap version of your splash + screen. Release 3.1 only supports Windows bitmap splash + screens. Once you've found your splash screen of choice + copy it to /boot/splash.bmp. Next, you need to + have a /boot/loader.rc file that contains the + following lines: + + + load kernel + load -t splash_image_data /boot/splash.bmp + load splash_bmp + autoboot + + + + FreeBSD 3.2+ + +

In addition to adding support for PCX splash screens, + FreeBSD 3.2 includes a nicer way of configuring the boot + process. If you wish, you can use the method listed above + for FreeBSD 3.1. If you do and you want to use PCX, replace + splash_bmp with splash_pcx. If, + on the other hand, you want to use the newer boot + configuration, you need to create a + /boot/loader.rc file that contains the + following lines: + + + include /boot/loader.4th + start + + +

    and a /boot/loader.conf that contains the + following: + + + splash_bmp_load="YES" + bitmap_load="YES" + + +

    This assumes you are using /boot/splash.bmp + for your splash screen. If you'd rather use a PCX file, + copy it to /boot/splash.pcx, create a + /boot/loader.rc as instructed above, and + create a /boot/loader.conf that contains: + + + splash_pcx_load="YES" + bitmap_load="YES" + bitmap_name="/boot/splash.pcx" + + + + +

Now all you need is a splash screen. For that you can surf + on over to the gallery at .

I don't know what he had in mind. However, here are some suggestions based on seeing over Web/CVS implementations on other projects. KDE has a nice interface. A bit too colourful for my tastes, but from a directory listing you can jump straight to the latest revision of a file (which ours doesn't do). It also shows the last person to work on the file, and a few sentances from the last log entry. Also, the "Jump directly to latest revision" option is useful. Once you're viewing the log for a particular file, you can also choose to see an "annotated" version, which has change bars showing the version and committer that committed each change. It's certainly nice, but I don't know how useful people would find it. You can also choose to show only those files that have particular tags on them, which could be useful. KDE's CVSWeb can be seen at http://kdecvs.stud.fh-heilbronn.de/cvsweb/. Given that it's based on our cvsweb.cgi in the first place, it's probably just a drop in replacement (or close to). I'm taking a brief look at the source code now, and with my JAPH hat on * It doesn't use "-w" or "use strict". * Lots of global variables. * Lots of "print '....';", and not enough "print <; Fri, 16 Jul 1999 07:39:52 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from ganderson@norloff.com) Received: from oed-u1.oed.ida.org (oed-u1.oed.ida.org [129.246.40.34]) by cs.ida.org (Pro-8.9.3/Pro-8.9.3) with ESMTP id KAA28593 for ; Fri, 16 Jul 1999 10:38:47 -0400 (EDT) Received: from norloff.com by oed-u1.oed.ida.org (8.8.8+Sun/SMI-SVR4) id KAA15185; Fri, 16 Jul 1999 10:38:44 -0400 (EDT) Message-ID: <378F4421.CB040F21@norloff.com> Date: Fri, 16 Jul 1999 10:39:29 -0400 From: "George (Andy) Anderson" Reply-To: ganderson@norloff.com X-Mailer: Mozilla 4.05 [en] (WinNT; I) MIME-Version: 1.0 To: freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.ORG Subject: Intel EtherExpress PRO/100B NIC... If a user does not know anything about what elements belong where the element list helps by only offering legal elements. That makes sense to me. That's it for now. The next step is to generate a complete document and post it as a personal page. Easier than sending fragments by e-mail.
