Bugs can be in one of several states: o - open A problem report has been submitted, no sanity checking performed. a - analyzed The report has been examined by a team member and evaluated. f - feedback The problem has been solved, and the originator has been given a patch or a fix has been committed. The PR remains in this state pending a response from the originator. s - suspended The problem is not being worked on. This is a prime candidate for somebody who is looking for a project to do. Ok, this is what I had in mind: Ok, here we go! Well, not really, but almost! I like this way of doing footnotes, but I suppose we'd better make a decision on it. (see my programming-tools patch) Similarly: Somehow the next list is in this para Survival Self-actualisation Where else would you like to put that closing tag? I don't like this way too much either. The problem is that there is a   ( ) in the SGML source. When the SGML gets converted to HTML, the escaping is lost. I've tried putting &160# in the SGML source, but that doesn't produce the desired result either. This problem appears to be manifesting itself throughout the site. The © used in page footers is being converted to an un-escaped copyright symbol in HTML, for example. Can anyone on freebsd-doc figure out a solution to this? If not, I'll file a new PR. Interesting problem. What's odd is that   is translated in the .sgml -> .html conversion (carried out by sgmlnorm) but & isn't (it appears as a literal "&" in the HTML output, as it should). I think this is hardcoded in sgmlnorm. If you look at /usr/ports/textproc/jade/work/jade-1.2.1/sgmlnorm/SGMLGenerator.cxx you'll see (at the bottom of the file) SP_NAMESPACE_SCOPE, which seems to special case lt, gt, amp, and quot for processing. This might be something that's fixed in OpenJade, which is at http://jade-cvs.avionitek.com/ if anyone can take a look. First, just being a "software professional" won't help too much, unless you know unix pretty well (Windows just isn't going to help at all). What you want to do is go to www.freebsd.org, and buried in there is a list of things that folks might want to try. Alternatively, if you don't like to try one of the things you find, then just try out FreeBSD until you find something you think needs improvement, and go at it. If you're looking at doing something substantial, you might want to sound people out on the FreeBSD-hackers list, to see if it's got some likely chance of being accepted ... but understand one thing: you can't get any agreement, before the software is written, that your work will be committed. That kind of thing ONLY comes when there's real software to look at, and people can judge if it's a useful thing, and written to sufficiently good standards. Take a look at FreeBSD source code yourself, you'll see what I mean. Oh, one last thing, you've addressed the wrong list here, FreeBSD-doc is dedicated to the process of building the documentation, and not technical programming issues. You wanted, probably, FreeBSD-hackers. > ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Chuck Robey | Interests include C programming, Electronics, 213 Lakeside Dr. Apt. Is this right? Yep, that's the right one. There's no serious need to worry about contention on new FAQ entries. Either you'll do it first or someone else will, if there happens to be two efforts on a single question in the FAQ, which is unlikely. Just be sure to send your updates separately or in manageable, related, chunks. I would suggest that you start with http://www.freebsd.org/docproj/docproj.html then take a look at the FreeBSD Handbook, the FAQ, and the tutorials, and fill in the gaps as you feel motivated. Why, even a nice writeup on ``Technical Writing for the Chronic Coder'' would be welcome :). From what I understand from reading the rather dense SGML standard, this means that NAMEs, NAME TOKENs etc are to be mapped to upper-case, but entity names aren't to be. An anchor target is a NAME (an ID to be precise). Now, the HTML 3.2 spec claims that using and in the same document is illegal, so one assumes that anchor ids should be treated as case insensitive. However it also says that the behaviour of user agents when fragment names and anchor names are not case-exact is undefined. This is a little confusing ... > Needless to say, this breaks a whole bunch of web pages that specify > sections in the handbook. (I just found it out when I couldn't get to > the correct section in the handbook from my package building error > logs page.) Yes, Netscape and Lynx don't seem to work correctly if anchor and fragment names don't match exactly. However, links within the handbook will internally consistent. A perusal of the HTML declaration however shows that it has been declared as CDATA and is thus is not under the scope of the NAMING case conversion rules. Further the HTML 3.2 spec also says: <--http://www.w3.org/TR/REC-html40/struct/links.html#h-12.2--> o Uniqueness: Anchor names must be unique within a document. Anchor names that differ only in case may not appear in the same document. o String matching: Comparisons between fragment identifiers and anchor names must be done by exact (case-sensitive) match. <----> In itself this is consistent because 'name' attributes are parsed as CDATA (not ID as I assumed earlier) as are 'href' attributes. These are thus case *sensitive* (subject to the above rules) and work well together. > I'm not sure if I follow you here, the standard says user agents are > not required to do anything special for non-case-matching names, so > Netscape (the one I tried) is perfectly following the standard. But Yes, Netscape and Lynx are behaving correctly. We are generating anchors based on the 'id' attributes of the original docbook elements. Since 'id's seem to be getting mapped to upper case the generated anchors also get to be in upper case. Perhaps someone with more SGML knowledge will clarify. One thing I noticed is that ``@allfiles = readdir 'portsdir';'' in docindex.pl seems to list the sub-dirs in creation order, not alphabetical which would be better. I've knocked together the following wrapper script to build +DOCS files for all the ports/packages installed on the system it's running on. Good point, I'll look into this. > I've knocked together the following wrapper script to build +DOCS > files for all the ports/packages installed on the system it's > running on. I noticed that samba installs _lots_ of text files that the script thinks are documentation. Ultimately, I think the best person to tweak the DOCS file would be the maintainer of the port. You need to have access to the port's docs to make sure that the script has indexed them properly. And you need good knowledge of the port to know when some docs should be left out. Once we're sure about what we need them to do, this really needs to go to -docs, at least for commenting on if not actioning it. Your wrapper is still useful though, because it'll allow us to give the -ports crowd the largest possible head start, by letting us create a large number of DOCS file to begin with. I'm gonna fiddle with the docsmaker script a little more then, if no-one else has any other comments, I'll take it to -docs. BTW, would the people in -ports be willing to make the commits needed to add support for the index to /etc/periodic/daily and /etc/rc? Or should that go to -hackers or -current? --- Andrew Boothman FreeBSD UK User Group http://ukug.uk.FreeBSD.org/~andrew/ http://ukug.uk.FreeBSD.org/ To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-doc" in the body of the message
