The C code reads this register on some interrupt condition to identify the target that is currently talking with the controller. This is in the TROUBLE.TXT somewhere. I have given up on it, and went out to purchase an Adaptec 2940U2W. After a couple of hours fiddling, finally got it working, I mean the SCSI card. Installing the latest FreeBSD is of course a breeze. Only problem I had is when I first install my new SCSI card, the system did not detect it. A few words with the IBM tech support engr told me that which slot I put it in is important. I have to install it at the first slot to get the Netfinity to recognise the SCSI card. After that everything went smoothly. My first impression of FreeBSD on the Netfinity, now a couple of hours old, is that everything runs so fast. I think the Ultra-2 architecture, the 256MB RAM, and the 400MHz PII helps a lot. :-) Thanks, Mike. Thanks, everyone. I made some changes (I blatted about it before hand I think) which caused selection of variable to occur as a default, modulo (cough) errors in setting variable or already known 'fixed' block device (either by quirk or by density code detection). I'll finish the second step and quirk to FIXED a number of devices that really are known to be FIXED only. Apparently too many of these devices say "oh sure, we do variable" when in fact they don't. The probable cause is, that Symbios changed the definition of the CTEST0 register (it was a general purpose R/W register, but has been labeled "reserves the right to use these bits for future 53C8XX family enhancements"). The latest data book I have is for the 53c895, and the register is available to the driver, for that controller. I don't know about the 896, but I've got to assume, that Symbios started to assign internal status and(or command bits to CTEST0 ... The solution to this problem is to either only use those bits of CTEST0, that still are available, or to use some other register to hold the current SCSI target information. The problem is, that CTEST0 is the only reasonable choice for early 53c8xx family members. Later chips got 16 more bytes of internal scratch register storage, but the driver had to be modified in a number of places, if CTEST0 was to to be replaced by, say, the low byte of SCRATCHC. This is not really hard to do, but will require some testing and more time than a weekend ;-) Access to a 53c896 card would help, as did having copies of the pages that describe CTEST0 in the "SYM53C896 Data Manual". Symbios has been very responsive when I asked for programming info in the past, but it will probably take many weeks until I receive the data books, if I order them today ... I could send patches that print register info at the place where the assert() fails, but I doubt this is the correct way to deal with this problem. Rather, I'd have the docs, and then will provide a solution that fixes the problem for the 896, without giving up 53c810 support in the driver, which is the real hard problem :) Regards, STefan To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-scsi" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-scsi Sat Jan 9 23:53:10 1999 Return-Path: Received: (from majordom@localhost) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) id XAA14843 for freebsd-scsi-outgoing; Sat, 9 Jan 1999 23:53:10 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from owner-freebsd-scsi@FreeBSD.ORG) Received: from www0d.netaddress.usa.net (www0d.netaddress.usa.net [204.68.24.33]) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) with SMTP id XAA14827 for ; Sat, 9 Jan 1999 23:53:07 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from slpalmer@netscape.net) Received: (qmail 12172 invoked by uid 60001); 10 Jan 1999 07:52:23 -0000 Message-ID: <19990110075223.12171.qmail@www0d.netaddress.usa.net> Received: from 204.68.24.33 by www0d via web-mailer(R2.6) on Sun Jan 10 07:52:23 GMT 1999 Date: 10 Jan 99 07:52:23 America/Fort_Wayne From: Stephen Palmer To: freebsd-current@FreeBSD.ORG, freebsd-scsi@FreeBSD.ORG, son@teaser.fr, "José" "Mª" Alcaide Subject: Re: Request fo help with Zip Drive on vpo0 in -current CC: Stephen Palmer , gp@oitunix.oit.umass.edu, freebsd-current@FreeBSD.ORG Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Transfer-Encoding: 8bit X-MIME-Autoconverted: from quoted-printable to 8bit by hub.freebsd.org id XAA14831 Sender: owner-freebsd-scsi@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk X-Loop: FreeBSD.org Sorry if this is redundant, but I haven't seen any new posts on this since 1/1/99.
