You don't apply disklabel to a partition, you apply it to a device or slice. Use the canonical name to avoid embarrassment, eg: disklabel -e da1 In your case, there is already a label on the disk, and disklabel is very protective of existing labels (for good reason). The man page seems to indiate that it does: Disk device name All disklabel forms require a disk device name, which should always be the raw "complete" (or "c") partition, for example /dev/rda0c. disklabel understands the abbreviation da0, which it converts internally to /dev/rda0c. >In your case, there is already a label on the disk, and disklabel is very >protective of existing labels (for good reason). Same results. Next I tried dd'ing a sector worth of 'hello world' to the disk and dd'd it back just to make sure that it actually got dd'd. (It did). So I booted up the NetBSD install disk and started installing... Once the hard disk was labeled and newfs was under way I canceled the install. Now it works fine and I can disklabel under FreeBSD without any problems. Maybe the install program for NetBSD automatically clears out the first few sectors before making a new label... I am wondering if when I ran disklabel after the dd, I should have used a -r to make sure that it read it from the disk rather than from memory. That may have been the problem? I don't know if this means much, but disklabel /dev/rda1c appears to work. Should it not? I had hoped to get away from the slower, more CPU/IRQ intensive 16 bit card since most of the files that system serves are on a large, inexpensive IDE disk. I've tried: * updating the SRM console firmware * updating the BIOS/Firmware/whatever on the ATA/66 card * removing the ata drivers from the kernel * booting generic kernel * disconnecting hard disk from card * placing the ATA/66 card in other slots * removing other cards which might cause conflicts * updating the system to 5.0-current, and repeating Nothing seems to help. Does anyone have any suggestions? Symptoms: build continues for hours (script foo; make buildworld creates a 4-6Mbyte logfile) and then the build stops. The system is only responsive in the sense that switching console screens works, the shell gives you another prompt on hitting return. But e.g. starting 'ls' just echos the command and then sits there. I can get to the kdebugger using ctl/alt/esc. Just built a kernel with -g and will retry the buildworld. There were two issues with the port until yesterday's update: - The Makefile logic itself assumed i386 and eventually the port was declared ONLY_FOR_ARCHS=i386. - As you mention, 0.59r itself is broken on alpha. There's a patch by Nils Faerber floating around that fixes this. Both of these should be fixed in the current version of the port. It works fine for me on an AXPpci33 under 4.0-STABLE. > I'd be willing to try a newer version, but where is your port update? > In releng4 or current? You get dropouts because your machine is too slow or possibly (if the complaints I read elsewhere are true) because the sound driver reacts badly to load situations. And you have used mpg123's buffering facility (say, "-b1024"), haven't you? > One file I played sounded OK but gave me these error messages: And you have verified that this particular MP3 file doesn't give any errors when played with mpg123 0.59r on x86? I posted a similar message the last week of December 99. Andrew mentioned that I might not be running the newest code that included AS1000 support (added Dec 1st, 99). But I've never been able to boot any code after that date either. The kernel gets loaded into memory and then the cpu halts. The console looks like this: Entering kernel at 0xfffffc00003245e0... halted CPU 0 halt code = 2 kernel stack not valid halt PC = fffffc00004ac70c >>> Did you have to make a kernel with specific options in order to get FreeBSD running on your 3300? If so, what were they? If not, what was the magic? ;) I know this has to work, as my machine has run WinNT, Linux and is happily number crunching setiathome files under NetBSD 1.4.2 right behind me as I write.
