If you have a question about FreeBSD, you can mail freebsd-questions@FreeBSD.org (with a meaningful subject line, please). If you have a question concerning some part of the FreeBSD documentation, this is the correct list for it, but you need to ask the question so that we can understand what you're after. Ciao, Sheldon. These represent problem reports covering all versions including experimental development code and obsolete releases. Bugs can be in one of several states: o - open A problem report has been submitted, no sanity checking performed. a - analyzed The report has been examined by a team member and evaluated. f - feedback The problem has been solved, and the originator has been given a patch or a fix has been committed. The PR remains in this state pending a response from the originator. s - suspended The problem is not being worked on. This is a prime candidate for somebody who is looking for a project to do. If the problem cannot be solved at all, it will be closed, rather than suspended. c - closed A problem report is closed when any changes have been integrated, documented, and tested. I know it is odd, and I'm asking for a volunteer to help me here. I'm not demanding anything by asking, I'm just asking. If I'm out of line, please let me know and I'll brainstorm plan B. I was wondering if I could find a volunteer to show up in Boulder/Denver Colorado (well, I'd go anywhere from Colo Springs to Cheyenne depending on what the SCA is doing that weekend :-), listen to a chalk talk on the new pccard/cardbus code and convert it to English so we have a design document that other can use to understand the code and help contribute to the effort. This may take several iterations to get this into shape. I'm not sure what I can offer in exchange for this service other than a working kernel based implementation for pccard and cardbus. Hmmm, I could offer some home cooking. People have told me that my wife's baking is better than my coding, and I agree with them. Maybe I could offer one of her cheesecakes in return. We are selecting companies with a high rate of employees between the age 18-30yrs to sample a full version of F magazine CD Rom. The smallest box contains 50 Cd's and although it is totally free we must have your commitment that the box of CD's will be positioned in a strategic position in the company where each employee is able to pick up their copy. If you would like to propose your company for this launch offer, please call F magazine's offices at 020 7379 4466 or email: chrissie@fmagazine.com The distribution is free although we would like each person who receives the CD to become a member of Club-F. Membership to Club-F is free - for life, and among other services, grants the free mailing of future issues of F magazine at the members address. The Club will be active for subscription after the 5th May at www.fmagazine.com F magazine CD-Rom, the UK based digital source of style, knowledge and life opportunities for the 'digital generation'. A beautiful magazine with electronic pages, numbered and able to ‘turn’ in the format equivalent to a paper publication. Each page however, is a programmable module that combines the fast interactive multimedia capacity of the CD-Rom with the power of the Internet. Note from the Managing Director- We have spent over 16 months researching and building the F magazine concept. I am proud to be able to offer this first issue of 120,000 copies to our UK market. Fmagazine will be launching its first issue in the US in July - if you are part of US Group and would like to propose the US offices, please let us know. Our goals are to translate the FreeBSD Docs to brasilian portuguese and to publish new FreeBSD documentation for brasilian users. The group is formed by experienced users of FreeBSD, most of them working as System Administrator. I belive I am the only one that is not a SysAdmin. :) We are developing a plan to start the translation of the FreeBSD Docs. The first step of this plan, IMHO, is to translate the FreeBSD Documentation Project Primer, wrote by Nick Clayton. This doc explains the way to write and to translate documentations. Our group has alredy set a dicussion list (bsd-l@br-unix.org) and in the next weeks we will have a homepage to put all the news and information. Anyone that wants to join the list: send email to majordomo@br-unix.org with subscribe bsd-l in the body. So, this is just an announce. I will report our work to freebsd-translate mailing list, and if anyone wants I can post the reports also in this list. Best Regards. The HTML documents on the freebsd.org site tend to fail to have any encoding declarations in the HTTP headers (Content-Type: text/html;charset=foo) or in the document HEAD (). Therefore, the browser falls back on its autodetection mechanism, which usually assumes ISO 8859-1 but sometimes decides the document is UTF-7 encoded. It picks UTF-7 if the document contains something that looks like a Modified Base64 sequence as per RFC 2152. The sequence is delimited by "+" and "-" and contains characters from the Base64 alphabet. The browser is not misbehaving in this situation; I think it is reasonable to assume UTF-7 when such sequences are found and no other information is available. An example of such a page is http://www.freebsd.org/ports/www.html which contains things like "apache+ipv6-1.3.11". I suggest either declaring the actual encodings in the documents or configuring the web server to send charset information in the response headers. - Mike ___________________________________________________________ Mike J. Similarly, at the end of section 2.2 the reference to Section 3.4 should be to section 2.4. The second paragraph of section 2.3 also refers to section 3.4, this should be to section 2.4 The last number in the 2nd. paragraph of section 2.4 should be 2.2 In section 2.5.2 there are two more references to 3.* which should be to 2.* ------------------------------------------------------------------------ In section 2.3 there's a line which says "About 85 lines down from the top..." Referring to /etc/rc.conf. As this file now only contains the overrides it probably won't have 85 lines. Perhaps /etc/defaults/rc.conf should be mentioned here. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Section 3.1 suggests backing up the default PPP configuration files in /etc/ppp/. I believe these have moved to /usr/share/examples/ppp/ least there normally isn't a default ppp.conf in /etc/ppp/ Section 3.2 also refers to these files. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Section 3.2.1 Refers to the handbook. The URL is missing (XXX URL? XXX) I think this should be to www.freebsd.org/handbook/userppp.html The ppp.conf example doesn't show that there should be indentation of the text. This is _most_ important.[1] In the default section it's impossible to tell where the 'set dial' line wraps. (Should there be a space after M0 or not.) I guess this is always difficult to show unequivocally. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ The third paragraph of section 3.2.1.3 refers to paragraph ??? and in paragraph 11 there's a reference to section ?? ------------------------------------------------------------------------ The second paragraph of section 3.3 refers to section 6. It should be 5. The last line of section 3.3 refers to section 5. It should be 4. The last number in the 2nd. bulleted line of chapter 4.1 should be 2.4. Likewise at the end of the paragraph before the bullets. Ditto for sections 4.2 and 4.3 ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Chapter 5 Needs some work... I haven't read Chapter 6. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Some prettification of the HTML may be achieved by: (line numbers refer to the file freebsd.org/tutorials/ppp/book.html) Joining line 290 to line 289 and remove some spaces then similarly join line 574 to 573 and then 898 to 897. [1] This would fix the error mentioned above [1] Then indent lines 1178 to 1186 inc. by one space Then indent lines 1197 to 1202 inc. by one space Then likewise for lines 1212 to 1219 inc. Then remove the "=" at the end of line 1782 and 1801 Then remove line 1794 Then remove the " _" at the end of line 582 ------------------------------------------------------------------------ I HopeThisHelps; sorry to be so (umm) pedantic ;-) John. >Release-Note: >Audit-Trail: >Unformatted: To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-doc" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-doc Thu Apr 20 8:14:26 2000 Delivered-To: freebsd-doc@freebsd.org Received: from giganda.komkon.org (giganda.komkon.org [209.125.17.66]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id C5BAC37BDEA for ; Thu, 20 Apr 2000 08:14:24 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from str@giganda.komkon.org) Received: (from str@localhost) by giganda.komkon.org (8.9.3/8.9.3) id LAA35660 for doc@freebsd.org; Thu, 20 Apr 2000 11:14:23 -0400 (EDT) Date: Thu, 20 Apr 2000 11:14:23 -0400 (EDT) From: Igor Roshchin Message-Id: <200004201514.LAA35660@giganda.komkon.org> To: doc@freebsd.org Subject: Please, correct the docs related to stable-current Sender: owner-freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk X-Loop: FreeBSD.org Hello! Why not add a new list item e.g. something like "The ports mechanism=20 makes every effort to customize a piece of ported software to the=20 specific hardare and software configuration of your system; as a=20 result, software installed via the ports mechanism may work better." Q: I did that, but when I tried to put it into /usr/ports/distfiles I=20 got some errors about not having permission. I seem to understand that this is no longer relevant, at least it=20 isn't on my 3.4-S and 4.0-S systems. In fact, I can write to=20 /usr/ports/distfiles (e.g. copying tarballs.) If this is the (general=20 ?) case, this question should be removed. Q: I have heard that some compiler options can cause bugs [omissis] Why not add something like "Specifying no option, ie issuing only=20 "make install", is NOT supposed to cause problems, anyway." This might make things clearer, especially for newbies. Q: I like having lots and lots of programs to play with [omissis] Why not add a warning such as: "WARNING: The Ports Collection consists of over 3,000 ports; software=20 conflicts do arise if you install ports thoughtlessly. It's believed that most readers of the Handbook won't be creating ports, so this section is 60 or so pages they'll not need. In the Handbook it can be replaced with "If you would like to learn more about the ports systems, or would like to create a port and submit it to the project, please see the _Porter's Handbook_". I'll do this mechanically (so the translators won't have much work to do). In the future, I expect that some of the port's specific stuff in the "Committer's Guide" (damn, should've called it the "Committer's Handbook") can migrate here as well, as can any nitty-gritty ports details that you might have thought to be inappropriate for the Handbook. The lines you want to replace are looking for the freebsd.dsl file in doc//share/sgml/freebsd.dsl, and not doc/share/sgml/freebsd.dsl (which is what your patch would do). This is because each language has its own .dsl file, so that we can keep per-language customisations separate. If you're planning on using doc.docbook.mk for your own documents then you are going to have to redefine DSLHTML and DSLPRINT accordingly. We should probably document this in doc.docbook.mk. Thanks for this. However. . . (there's always a "however" :-) ) I've got a couple of questions. Perhaps if you could answer them in the document it would be more useful? 1. Why are you using natd, instead of PPP's built in address translation facilities? What are the pros and cons of each? 2. [ This is the kicker ] Suppose you're using nat (either in PPP, or with natd) to run some private net IP addresses internally. How do you firewall them? It's my understanding (and I haven't done this, so I could be wrong) that if you are using 192.168.1/24 internally then you can't do something like $fwcmd add deny all from any to 192.168.0.0:255.255.0.0 via tun0 as the address translation happens to incoming packets *before* the firewall gets to intercept them. 3. From a text point of view it looks fine. Would you care to run it past some people on the security mailing list, so they can make sure the advice is sound from a security perspective as well? Any thoughts? And thanks for taking the time to write this up. N -- Internet connection, $19.95 a month. Computer, $799.95. Modem, $149.95. Telephone line, $24.95 a month. Software, free. That sounds like a good idea. Please put a link to the new handbook in the original handbook though, there are many documents (including some printed ones) that refer to "http://www.FreeBSD.org/handbook/porting.html" and we don't want people who go there to get "not found". * It's believed that most readers of the Handbook won't be creating ports, * so this section is 60 or so pages they'll not need. In the Handbook it * can be replaced with "If you would like to learn more about the ports * systems, or would like to create a port and submit it to the project, * please see the _Porter's Handbook_". Does this mean that the porters guide section doesn't get published anymore, or is it going to be published as a separate book? * I'll do this mechanically (so the translators won't have much work to do). Thanks. BTW, please ask the cvs-meisters for a repository copy so we won't lose history. * In the future, I expect that some of the port's specific stuff in the * "Committer's Guide" (damn, should've called it the "Committer's Handbook") * can migrate here as well, as can any nitty-gritty ports details that * you might have thought to be inappropriate for the Handbook. No, the (new) porter's handbook is for people creating or upgrading ports, not committers. The stuff in the committer's guide is something that is specific to committers and committers are required to read the committer's guide every now and then. For the benefit of people who only commit ports once in a while (and work elsewhere most of the time), I think they should be kept separate.
