Well, good intentions and all that. Early adopters can go and play now. The changes have gone in to doc/share/{mk,sgml}, and I've committed a document that uses them, en*/articles/vm-design/*. That should be enough for people to take a look around, and make suggestions and improvements. Note that at the moment *** THIS DEPENDS ON THE IMAGEMAGICK PORT *** which is not listed in the docproj meta-port yet. I think we can slim down the requirement somewhat (probably just to NetPBM) but if we wait for me to do that it'll be Christmas. I'm sure someone else can look into this over the coming week. Because of this, the vm-design article hasn't been turned on in the upper level Makefile yet. When this has stabilised slightly it can be turned on. N -- Internet connection, $19.95 a month. I downloaded the .pdb version form the main FreeBSD distro site today. I then copied it onto my Compaq Aero 2100 palmsize device running Windows CE 2.1 and was unable to read it. I first tried to read it using 'Gutenberg Bookviewer', then with 'Oopdreams Peek-a-book', and finally with Mobisoft MobiReader'. All are capable of viewing regular PDB files but could not open the handbook. The Bookviewer displayed all kinds of gibberish, (I downloaded the .pdb file three times from two locations). Peek-a-book freezes and eventually puts my handheld in suspend mode, and Mobireader complains that the format isn't right and simply refuses to open it. I can read the ASCII format but it looks _kind_of_ugly_ and is really a nightmare for searching etc. I cannot create a 'PRC' - or 'DOC' which always opens fine as well file instead beacuse I do not have an indexed version of the document that I can convert to PRC. Would you be so kind to confirm this error? Is there a recommended way to view the info on a CE device? Perhaps, can you assist me in creating a version that CE users can read? bulk X-Loop: FreeBSD.org Current FreeBSD problem reports The following is a listing of current problems submitted by FreeBSD users. These represent problem reports covering all versions including experimental development code and obsolete releases. Bugs can be in one of several states: o - open A problem report has been submitted, no sanity checking performed. a - analyzed The report has been examined by a team member and evaluated. f - feedback The problem has been solved, and the originator has been given a patch or a fix has been committed. The PR remains in this state pending a response from the originator. s - suspended The problem is not being worked on. This is a prime candidate for somebody who is looking for a project to do. If the problem cannot be solved at all, it will be closed, rather than suspended. c - closed A problem report is closed when any changes have been integrated, documented, and tested. I can see Nik committed the new image handling stuff, but now fdp-primer has a problem which I can reproduce with freshly-cvsupped doc sources... If I do: # cd /usr/doc/en_US.ISO_8859-1/books/fdp-primer && make all I get: make: don't know how to make callouts/1.png. Stop Cute... I tried to debug it a bit but all I could find out was that make(1) was unable to find the image where it was expecting it. Maybe this rings a bell with you, Nik? Add the contents of the file "contrib.mak.addon" in the "print-3.1.9/Ghost" directory at the end of the "contrib.mak" file. The next step is to add "$(DD)stp.dev to the line "DEVICE_DEVS6=" in "unix-gcc.mak". After all these changes have been made, do a cd /usr/ports/print/ghostscript6 ; make install All should compile fine, and after that you have ghostscript6 with the stp driver compiled in. Run "gs -h" to be absolutely sure :) Don't forget to update or adjust your filters! See print-3.1.9/Ghost/README for further details and examples. All this should work with NetBSD and OpenBSD as well, but i didn't test it anyway. If you have any questions or comments, please mail me: uebs@gmx.at Good luck and have fun :) ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- >How-To-Repeat: >Fix: >Release-Note: >Audit-Trail: >Unformatted: To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-doc" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-doc Tue Oct 10 11:47: 1 2000 Delivered-To: freebsd-doc@freebsd.org Received: from 2711.dynacom.net (2711.dynacom.net [206.107.213.3]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id AAA6637B66F for ; Tue, 10 Oct 2000 11:46:57 -0700 (PDT) Received: from urx.com (dsl1-160.dynacom.net [206.159.132.160]) by 2711.dynacom.net (Build 101 8.9.3/NT-8.9.3) with ESMTP id LAA03611; Tue, 10 Oct 2000 11:46:40 -0700 Message-ID: <39E36410.7D1E791E@urx.com> Date: Tue, 10 Oct 2000 11:46:40 -0700 From: Kent Stewart Reply-To: kstewart@urx.com Organization: Dynacom X-Mailer: Mozilla 4.75 [en] (Windows NT 5.0; U) X-Accept-Language: en MIME-Version: 1.0 To: Jun Kuriyama Cc: freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.ORG Subject: Re: doc/www build failure report References: <200010101530.e9AFU1B00944@castle2.jp.FreeBSD.org> Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Sender: owner-freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk X-Loop: FreeBSD.org Jun Kuriyama wrote: > > o doc building failed with log: > ============================================================ > *** doc-all started at Tue Oct 10 06:30:23 JST 2000 *** > cd /home/kuriyama/ncvs/doc && make > ===> en_US.ISO_8859-1 > ===> en_US.ISO_8859-1/articles > ===> en_US.ISO_8859-1/articles/committers-guide > ===> en_US.ISO_8859-1/articles/dialup-firewall > ===> en_US.ISO_8859-1/articles/diskless-x > ===> en_US.ISO_8859-1/articles/fonts > ===> en_US.ISO_8859-1/articles/formatting-media > ===> en_US.ISO_8859-1/articles/ipsec-must > ===> en_US.ISO_8859-1/articles/mh > ===> en_US.ISO_8859-1/articles/multi-os > ===> en_US.ISO_8859-1/articles/new-users > ===> en_US.ISO_8859-1/articles/programming-tools > ===> en_US.ISO_8859-1/articles/zip-drive > ===> en_US.ISO_8859-1/books > ===> en_US.ISO_8859-1/books/faq > ===> en_US.ISO_8859-1/books/fdp-primer > make: don't know how to make callouts/1.png. That's fine and dandy, but without searching specifcally for internal, I can't seem to find that page... this is a valuable resource and I think it should be either copied as part of the handbook, or at least a small link to it from the installing FreeBSD section of the handbook. I have noticed a lot of people using the word "issue" in this way, the last few years. I find it personally annoying, as it almost never had this meaning when I was growing up. > Q3) "CTM does not interactively compare the sources you have with > those on the master archive or otherwise pull them across.." > ^^^^^^^^^ > > I seem to understand: > "CTM neither compares [...] nor pulls them across in any > other/different way" > > Ie "otherwise" is a (manner) adjunct within the scope of negation and > here means (more or less) "in any other way". The differences between CTM and the other methods of updating are that CTM doesn't transfer entire source files, and it doesn't make any attempt to compare what's on the server with what's on your machine. I guess the implication of the sentence in question is that in order to do the comparison, CTM would need to pull them to the client. It doesn't do this. If I were to rewrite this, I'd say "CTM does not interactively compare the sources you have with those on the master archive. Nor does it pull them from the server on demand." > Q4) "If you inadvertently wipe out portions of your archives [...]" > ^^^^^^^^^^^^^ > > I seem to understand that "inadvertently" = "by accident" > (alternatively, it may also mean "unintentionally" in the Q4 context). > > But... the intended meaning is (or should be) that a user is > completely **unaware**, since his/her sources may even be deleted AND > subsequently restored **without** the user even noticing both actions. > > Should I translate this last idea ? No, I don't think that it's necessary that the user be aware that they blew away their sources, just that it happened and they were not intending to do this. (Usually I notice this right after it happens, but I digress.) > Q5) "If you wipe out some portion of your source tree [...] with > anoncvs [you will have to] simply delete the bad bits and resync. > ^^^ > "bad" bits (?)= partly damaged; partly corrupted. MS Outlook and Outlook Express are not such mailers and the lines they produce are a pain to read on most UNIX systmes.] You only need to download the two floppies kern.flp and mfsroot.flp from the /pub/FreeBSD/floppies directory of the ftp site of your choice. The install program will download the rest for you. This means of course that you will have to have network connection available during install. If you want to install from DOS, that means MS-DOS or Win95 in DOS mode. But normally you do not need to do this, just get the two floppy images, copy them to floppies as described in the installation guide and then boot from them and the install will work. > Thank you! This is quite a difference from the "/bin:/usr/bin" path that actually applies. >How-To-Repeat: ~/FreeBSD-source $ find \ src-current/lib/libc src-current/include \ src-stable/lib/libc src-stable/include \ -type f -print0 | xargs -0 grep -w _PATH_DEFPATH /dev/null src-current/lib/libc/gen/exec.c: path = _PATH_DEFPATH; src-current/include/paths.h:#define _PATH_DEFPATH "/usr/bin:/bin" src-stable/lib/libc/gen/exec.c: path = _PATH_DEFPATH; src-stable/include/paths.h:#define _PATH_DEFPATH "/usr/bin:/bin" man 3 execvp (on a -STABLE machine) ----------------------------------------------------------------- ... The functions execlp() and execvp() will duplicate the actions of the shell in searching for an executable file if the specified file name does not contain a slash ``/'' character. The search path is the path speci- fied in the environment by ``PATH'' variable. If this variable isn't specified, the default path ``/bin:/usr/bin:'' is used. In addition, certain errors are treated specially. ... ----------------------------------------------------------------- >Fix: Not sure about it due to further reading in the manpage: ----------------------------------------------------------------- ... COMPATIBILITY Historically, the default path for the execlp() and execvp() functions was ``:/bin:/usr/bin''. This was changed to place the current directory last to enhance system security. ... ----------------------------------------------------------------- Either the source or the doc is wrong in this respect. As I'm not sure, there's no patch to be included here. Although I like the current behaviour very much to *not* include the current directory when not explicitely specified in the PATH variable (and those who do get what they deserve ...). So I feel the manpage to be behind the established situation. Please don't tell me the source is. :) virtually yours 82D1 9B9C 01DC 4FB4 D7B4 61BE 3F49 4F77 72DE DA76 Gerhard Sittig true | mail -s "get gpg key" Gerhard.Sittig@gmx.net -- If you don't understand or are scared by any of the above ask your parents or an adult to help you. >Release-Note: >Audit-Trail: >Unformatted: To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-doc" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-doc Sat Oct 14 16:12:53 2000 Delivered-To: freebsd-doc@freebsd.org Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (freefall.FreeBSD.org [216.136.204.21]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 1EAA137B66C; Sat, 14 Oct 2000 16:12:52 -0700 (PDT) Received: (from dan@localhost) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.9.3/8.9.2) id QAA39871; Sat, 14 Oct 2000 16:12:52 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from dan@FreeBSD.org) Date: Sat, 14 Oct 2000 16:12:52 -0700 (PDT) From: Message-Id: <200010142312.QAA39871@freefall.freebsd.org> To: dan@FreeBSD.org, freebsd-doc@freebsd.org, dan@FreeBSD.org Subject: Re: docs/21712: core(5) manpage fails to mention kern.sugid_coredump Sender: owner-freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk X-Loop: FreeBSD.org Synopsis: core(5) manpage fails to mention kern.sugid_coredump Responsible-Changed-From-To: freebsd-doc->dan Responsible-Changed-By: dan Responsible-Changed-When: Sat Oct 14 16:11:32 PDT 2000 Responsible-Changed-Why: I'll quickly fix this.
