This PC has an integrated 16-bit Plug and Play Crystal 3D (CS4237B) audio controller. After compiling the sound support into my kernel, I gave some of my fav CDs a listen with the same set of speakers I've been using on another system. The sound quality sounds rather poor, as if it is muffled slightly, and the range of volume doesn't go as high as I'm used to. In fact, my 2-year old Linux notebook with a similar 16-bit audio chip (soundblaster) sounds considerably better on the same speakers. I'm new to freebsd, so I'm not sure whether the driver is poor, whether I need to tune something, or whether my audio hardware is just bad. I added the following line in my kernel config to enable to pcm driver: device pcm It seems to show up fine, I'm just a bit dissapointed in the quality. pcm0: at port 0x534-0x537,0x388-0x38b,0x220-0x22f irq 5 drq 1,0 on isa0 Any suggestions? The > sound quality sounds rather poor, as if it is muffled slightly, and the range > of volume doesn't go as high as I'm used to. How are you playing the CD? Pressing play on your CDROM or equivalent action (eg. `cdcontrol play`) is not affected by the sound drivers, and should work even without sound drivers installed. One thing you should try is "mixer cd 100" to set the volume on the CD input to max, and "mixer vol 100" to set the master output to max. Output volume when playing CDs is a combination of those two settings. I also have a CS4237B (AOpen AW35 Pro). It works fine with FreeBSD 4.1, although the audio in Q3A sometimes seems a bit scratchy. Also, at high volumes or when using headphones, I can hear the RF soup from inside the computer coming through the output (it changes depending on CPU load, mouse movement, etc). The card works fine but if even I can hear the RF noise it is nowhere near audiophile-quality. Another factor that affects audio quality is the position of the computer case relative to the speakers. The noise of the computer's fans, drives, etc can interfere with your tunes. This may seem obvious, but after a while people stop noticing the noise their computer makes. That noise, even if you don't notice it, can drown out other sounds. I never did figure out what was causing it and finally had to just take pcm out of my kernel to keep from triggering a panic and reboot whenever something tried to make a sound... Or is there any vic or vat for Macs or Windows ? What I have in mind is MPEG as a massmedium, like Realmedia or Quicktime. Its much easier, its open, and in the near future we will not have those bandwidth problems anymore. See what you can do with modem at http://www.uni-bonn.de/~uzs106/ and thanks to Uni-Bonn for supporting this video/x-mpegurl MIME type. Its a little bit playing with standards, like PAL against SECAM against NTSC or VHS against BETA, hey, Sony is teaming up with Real now ;-) In this context: I dont understand all the troubles with VCD. Does anybody use hardware, that is specially designed for VCD ? It would be so much easier to just burn a usual CD. H. [...] >man vic, from 1995, says, that MPEG isnt supported yet, Have a look at http://videolab.uoregon.edu/mim/ It's basically decapsulating the MPEG/RTP frames it receives from a multicast group and feeds it to mtvp (the commandline version). Works quite nice. I've been using it to view MPEG1 streams generated by Cisco's IPTV. >contrary to former plans, and I saw a big SGI Media server, >that can stream 100 MPEG streams...but this is broadband. The only multicat capable MPEG streaming server I know is Cisco's IPTV and that's running on NiceTry ;( It claims to support MPEG2 and MPEG4 as well. -tb To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-multimedia" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-multimedia Wed Oct 25 8:12: 6 2000 Delivered-To: freebsd-multimedia@freebsd.org Received: from web10305.mail.yahoo.com (web10305.mail.yahoo.com [216.136.130.83]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with SMTP id 45AA437B479 for ; Wed, 25 Oct 2000 08:12:05 -0700 (PDT) Message-ID: <20001025151205.32400.qmail@web10305.mail.yahoo.com> Received: from [128.165.147.175] by web10305.mail.yahoo.com; Thu, 26 Oct 2000 04:12:04 NZDT Date: Thu, 26 Oct 2000 04:12:04 +1300 (NZDT) From: =?iso-8859-1?q?Graham=20Guttocks?= Subject: Re: CD-RW: SCSI or EIDE/ATAPI? It just hit me that when I had similar trouble with a matrox card, I found some floppy-image with some (MS-DOS) tools on Matrox' web-site. One of these tools was able to automatically scan the PCI bus, detect and fix any badly configured matrox cards. I can't remember what it was called, but it shouldn't be too hard to find. The only problem was, the "fix" would vanish on every power-cycle. It did however work to boot the MS-DOS floppy, run the tool, and reboot into your favorite OS. -- Frode Vatvedt Fjeld To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-multimedia" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-multimedia Fri Oct 27 21: 1:33 2000 Delivered-To: freebsd-multimedia@freebsd.org Received: from sack.ees.com (sack.ees.com [199.2.205.244]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 7D5CF37B479 for ; Fri, 27 Oct 2000 21:01:30 -0700 (PDT) Received: from localhost (myke@localhost) by sack.ees.com (8.8.7/8.8.7) with SMTP id UAA21320 for ; Fri, 27 Oct 2000 20:58:57 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from myke@ees.com) Date: Fri, 27 Oct 2000 20:58:56 -0700 (PDT) From: Mike Holling To: freebsd-multimedia@freebsd.org Subject: joystick on als120 Message-ID: MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: TEXT/PLAIN; charset=US-ASCII Sender: owner-freebsd-multimedia@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk X-Loop: FreeBSD.org I'm running 4.1.1-RELEASE on a motherboard with integrated ALS120 chipset. I have docs only for Voxware and it says "Unfortunately, a true bidirectional mode that allows simultaneous recording and playback is not supported ". Is it different with newpcm?
